With all but a couple of the scheduled second fixtures in the UKDA National League’s season being played off it was all change at the top of all five divisions. In the Cosmo Darts Premier Division reigning champions Lancashire with a 25-11 home win over Kent have taken over from Cornwall at the top of the table with a total of 54 points just one more than second placed Hampshire who have moved up one place after winning their home game against Glamorgan 25-11. Cornwall. The early pacesetters went down 23-13 at Leicestershire and as a result drop to fifth on 39 points.

Last season’s runners-up Warwickshire suffered a disappointing 21-15 defeat at Essex and drop from fourth to sixth in the table on 38 points while their hosts with 46 points move up two places to third, highlight of the encounter was the performance of home player Keegan Brown who chalked up winning legs of 15,14,12 and 13 darts to win 4-0 against an unfortunate Noel Grant who had a very creditable 30.25 average.

In the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division Humberside with a 23-13 home win over Gwynedd have leapt up four places to take over pole position from Dorset whose lesser 18-18 draw at Gwent has seen them drop to second place on 43 points, five fewer than the new leaders. Hertfordshire’s 20-16 home win over Berkshire has taken them from sixth to third in the table just one point short of Dorset while Berkshire go down two places to sixth on 38 points. Sussex have moved off the foot of the division their 20-16 home win over Oxfordshire taking them up a huge seven places to fifth just one point behind their opponents who are fourth.

Former leaders of the L-Style Division One Worcestershire had their fixture away to West Midlands postponed and will now play it on the weekend of the 18th / 19th February 2023. Due to the deferred fixture Worcestershire go from top to next to bottom of the table with their future hosts West Midlands below them. Derbyshire had a close but nevertheless a 19-17 win at home against Buckinghamshire which has seen them take over in the number one spot with 46 points while their visitors, despite losing actually moved up the table one place to fourth on 39 points. Suffolk move up two places to second following their 20-16 win at Somerset which leaves them just one point off the top. Leicestershire held their hosts Merseyside to an 18-18 draw which keeps them in third place in the division five points short of the leaders while Merseyside remain in sixth position.

A 19-17 defeat away to the Black Country has cost Norfolk the leadership of Division Two and sees them drop to third place on 41 points, the same amount of points as second placed Tyne and Wear who moved up two places in the table following their 18-18 draw at Wiltshire. From a first round of fixtures third place West of England have gone into pole position as a result of their 19-17 win at Cumbria which took their points tally to 45 giving them a four points breathing space over both Tyne and Wear and Norfolk. Cumbria drop to the bottom of the table replacing newly promoted Gloucestershire who are just above them with 34 points one more than Cumbria.

After completing the first round of fixtures in Division Three, Breconshire topped the table on 27 points with second placed Middlesex also on 27 points. Game number two brought the two teams together playing on Breconshire’s board but despite the home advantage it was Middlesex who ran out the 19-17 winners to take over the top position with 49 points and Breconshire drop to third with 44 points. Breconshire are four behind Salopian who as a result of their 20-16 home win over Northumberland moved up one place in the table to second with 48 points. Isle of Wight lost their home tie against Pembrokeshire 26-10 and have the unenviable recognition of being the only team in all five divisions to remain at the foot of the table after both the first and second fixtures.

Oh dear whatever happened!! After a fantastic result in their opening fixture against Yorkshire when Warwickshire won their home game 20-16 they then played away against Essex and the outcome was definitely not as they would have wished or even expected.

Saturday’s games didn’t get off to a bad start as the ladies ‘B’ after losing the opener when Karen Williams won 3-1 against Caroline Pike then took a 2-1 lead as Natalie Gilbert won 3-1 against Stacey Ellis and Tammy Montgomery beat Wendy Collins 3-0. Tammy Montgomery won her three legs in 20,17 and 28 darts to give her at the end of the game the match award for her great 23.12 average. Leanne Halls had a similar 3-0 win over Marian Conway to level the match at 2-2 but the result was taken to 4-2 in Warwickshire’s favour when Sue Gulliver won 3-0 against Carol Pinfold and Donna Pinch rounded off the win with her 3-1 success over Donna Gleed.

The men’s ‘B’ saw all of the opening five games go to a deciding leg with the home team winning the first three. Danny McIntyre beat Carl Winters, Shaun Fox won against Ian McFarlane and Darren Richardson made it 3-0 when he won his game with Adam Wood. It was game four before Warwickshire got a stripe on the board and it was supplied Mark Martin who defeated Bryan Margerison .

Jason Murphy restored the three games advantage for the hosts when he won against Lee Miller but by the midway point the scoreline was 4-2 to Essex after Dave Hill had kept the visitors in the hunt with a 4-2 win over Simon Monk.

The second half began as did the first with the home side winning the first three games, supplying the wins were Scott Lawrie, Michael Hancocks and Andrew Currivan who in turn beat Karl Reynolds (4-2), Carl Green (4-0) and Martin Tonks (4-1). Warwickshire then had their best run of the match winning two consecutive games as Adam Hancock won 4-2 against Rob Donat and Nigel Heydon with a man of the match performance against Phil Brewster won 4-3. Heydon was made to fight all the way for his win as no fewer than three times he had to come from behind as Brewster won the first, third and fifth legs in 21,17 and 13 darts with Nigel Heydon replying in 20,17 and 15 darts to take the game to a deciding leg. Heydon made the first throw advantage pay as he went on to win the seventh and deciding leg in 17 darts with Brewster close behind him requiring just 49, Nigel Heydon’s average 27.57.

The final game of the day saw a 4-2 result going to Jamie Peetoom who accounted for Mark Strong giving Essex an 8-4 win plus an overall lead on the day of 10-8.

Once again the ladies came to the rescue as Angela Jones put the ‘A’ side 1-0 up when she won 3-0 against Lynn Kelly and Chloe McKivett doubled the lead when she beat Kerry Rudd with a similar 3-0 result. Chloe not only winning her game but also taking the lady of the match award for her 20.59 average which included winning legs of 24,22 and 27 darts. The score them moved nicely along to 3-0 when Courtney Hine won 3-1 against Sue Waterman after Waterman had won the first leg. The winning fourth leg came up as early as the fourth game when Hannah Meek chalked up the all-important stripe when she defeated Ann Farmer 3-0.

The last two games both went the full five legs distance and could easily have gone to either side but it was wins for the Essex duo Jade Goffard and Karen Breen who in turn won against Nina Bolt and Melanie Jones.

With the ladies ‘A’ adding their 4-2 win the overall score was now all square at 12-12 with just the men’s ‘A’ to play.

Jenson Walker (Warwickshire) won the opening leg against Brad Halls only to see Halls then win the next three., however Walker stood his ground and battled on to go on and win the tie 4-3. That unfortunately for the away side was the only shining light of the first half as Brad Halls beat Jack Wareing 4-3, Keegan Brown won against Noel Grant with Brown recording a superb 37.11 average and Grant, despite losing 4-0 had an impressive 30.25 average.

Richie Howson moved the score along to 3-1 in favour of Essex when he won 4-1 against Tom Martin and with a 4-0 win for Joe Russell over Kevin Dowling followed by a 4-3 success for Wayne Gleed against Wayne Mynard, the hosts were 5-1 up at the halfway point.

It was a similar story as the second half got underway as Paul Marsh beat Gareth Braham 4-3 before Warwickshire’s man of the match Jamie Atkins was able to add their second win. Playing against Darren Peetoom, Atkins won 4-2 with a 28.05 average which included winning legs of 13,20,19 and 16 darts.

This season’s new addition to the Warwickshire squad Chris Wickenden was unable to add to Atkins win as he went down 4-2 to Ben Adams whose 26.36 average was lower than Wickenden’s which was 27.00 but the win for Adams gave the Essex men’s ‘A’ team the win as it took them into a 7-2 lead.

Craig Vickers made it 8-2 when he won 4-2 against Steve Hine before Matty Washbrook made the scoreline a little more respectable when he beat Lennie Holmes 4-1. The final score was 9-3 as Steve Haggerty (Essex) handed a rare defeat to Jamie Hughes when he won 4-3.

The overall 21-15 win for Essex was the second heaviest defeat for Warwickshire in the opening two seasons of the UKDA National League, the biggest defeat coming in the final game of last season when they lost 24-12 to Lincolnshire, the men’s ‘A’ actually losing by the same 9-3 margin in that game too.

The win for Essex moves them two places up the table to third on 46 points while Warwickshire lose their fourth place and drop to sixth on 38 points.

After winning promotion from division three last season Black Country were brought back down to earth when in their opening fixture in division two they lost 20-16 playing away against West of England. Their second fixture was a home tie against Norfolk which once again turned out to be a trying test for the division two newcomers.

The ladies ‘A’ were unable to gain a single winner as Norfolk’s Nicole Bartram, Linda Varnon, Lucy Hoddy, Claire Broom, Gemma Reynolds and Lynsey Childs took the visitors to a 6-0 win.

It looked as though the men’s ‘B’ were also going to struggle as Ashley Brown and Dan Taylor gave Norfolk the early 2-0 lead. Adam Edgar stopped the rot with his 3-1 win over Kim Buckingham and with a 3-0 success for Gavin Smith over Hamish Varnon followed by a 3-2 win for Liam Kelly against David Dearing the home side had reversed the lead and were 3-2 up. By the break that lead was increased to 4-2 as Jamie Rollinson added his 3-1 success over Gary Knott to the tally.

Norfolk took first blood as the second half kicked off, Terry Stanmore beating Ali Hickinbottom 3-2 but the hosts moved into an unassailable position when Neil Steventon beat Timothy Mann 3-0 and Connor Whitehouse won 3-1 against Lewis Winter. Two 3-0 wins for Norfolk from Dale Paul and James Goldsmith in turn against Jamie Barrowman and James Hykin reduced the home team’s lead to 6-5 but with a final 3-1 win from Cayden Smith over Jon Sharp the Black Country men’s ‘B’ team won 7-5.

Stephanie Potter’s 3-1 win over Maxine Prosser gave Norfolk the opening win in the ladies ‘A’ game but it didn’t last long as Natalie Mansell beat Marie Stopher 3-1 to level the score. The visitors lead was restored in the third when Mandy Gray beat Steph Konya 3-1 and extended to 3-1 when Julia Virgoe won the decider against Heather Wright.

Chez Allcock kept Black Country’s hopes alive for a share of the spoils when she added her straight 3-0 win over Teresa Felgate to their account but a similar 3-0 win for Sandra Page against Shannon Hall in the final game gave Norfolk a 4-2 win.

With just the men’s ‘A’ game to play and the home side trailing 15-9 something special was required from the men and that is exactly what they supplied.

The first half turned out to be a clean sweep for the Black Country as Alex Howells beat Jack Holmes 4-3, Rob Smith won by the same 4-3 margin against Darren Brown, Paul Wells had a 4-2 success over Craig Venman before both Dan Nicholls and Trevor Brennon in turn won 4-0 against Aaron Taylor and Vinny Mudd. Then with Gaz Johnson adding a 4-3 win over James Cole the home team were 6-0 up.

Norfolk got their first winner in the seventh game when Olly King beat Rich Bowen 4-2 but when Justin Evans won 4-0 against Andrew Hircock the men’s ‘A’ were home and safe with a 7-1 lead but the overall score was level at 16-16 and another three wins were necessary to secure a win for the weekend’s fixture.

Stephen Jones reduced that requirement to two more needed as he won 4-1 against Terry Redhead and with Reece Colley adding his 4-0 success against Evan Wilson just one more win was all that was required.

Graham Hall (Black Country) pushed David Wilson all the way for the vital win but lost out in the decider and Wilson won 4-3 to leave the overall result hinging on the final game of the weekend.

Playing that last game for the hosts was Shane Price who like Graham Hall was taken to a decider, but on this occasion it was Price who got the better of the 4-3 result against Darren Youngs to give the Black Country men’s ‘A’ a resounding 10-2 victory and an overall 19-17 win for the weekend.

Salopian’s unbeaten start to the 2022-2023 season in division three of the UKDA National League continued after a hard fought 20-16 victory at home against Northumberland.

At the local Bagley Club it was the visitors who made the early breakthrough in the ladies ‘B’ match after Lisa Barnes defeated the luckless Hayley McGuiness who had been drawn out first for the second successive game. Claire Boyle (12.68) responded for Salopian to level the game. The Northumbrians hit back taking the next three to establish an unbeatable and winning 4-1 lead. The significance of the final ladies match could not be overstated with Julie Griffiths (17.06) winning the deciding fifth leg to reduce the overall deficit to two points going into the men’s ‘B’ match.

Paul Ashworth (21.35) and Adrian Logsdale (21.17) ensured the momentum was maintained by Salopian as they opened up a 2-0 lead although that was checked as Paul Sinclair pulled one back for Northumberland with his 3-1 win over Gary Crowther. Salopian’s two games lead was restored when Mark Crutchley beat Paul Bell 3-0 and although Dan Hallowell (Northumberland) beat Nigel Neale 3-2 by the halfway stage the home team had opened up a 4-2 lead after Darren Lane beat Dean Stackhouse 3-2.

The visitors won the first game of the second half, Dale Graham beating Ian Evans 3-2 before Salopian added three consecutive wins from Jamie Kynaston, Shaun Pryce and Ben Morgan who in turn defeated Stevie Adams (3-0), Lee Shanks (3-0) and Kev McGarry (3-0) to go 7-3 up.

The last two games both went to Northumberland as Richard Gerry beat Eric Ryan 3-0 and Danny Oman won 3-2 against Steve O’Callaghan to put the final score at 7-5 to Salopian.

Alison Gallagher (17.57) gave Salopian ladies ‘A’ the perfect start taking the first game on Sunday 3-1 against Angela Best only to see Casey Stephenson (14.17) beat Racheal Williams by the same margin to level the game.

The hosts took the lead again, this time thanks to a straight 3-0 win from Steph Clarke who beat Ang Turnbull and with a similar 3-0 win for Sarah Roberts over Iyla Leighton the home team were assured of at the worst a share of the points.

Sara Gowens reduced Salopian’s lead to 3-2 when she beat Sue Lane 3-1 but a final 3-1 success for Evonne Taylor over Phonsawan Whillis gave Salopian the 4-2 result.

Going into the final men’s ‘A’ game the hosts held an overall 13-11 lead.

John Roberts (24.50) gave Salopian men’s ‘A’ the perfect start with a 4-2 victory in the opening match against Micky Ord, but indicative of the weekends darts Northumberland hit back to take the next two games with Andy Parks beating Martin Riggs 4-2 and Mark Stephenson winning 4-3 against Ash Hilditch. Kacey Jones (26.89) restored parity winning the fourth game against Billy Leonard 4-1 however once again Northumberland fought back taking the next game as Daniel Stephenson (26.01) won 4-1 against Terry Nash. It was level pegging at the halfway stage as Matt Elsey (Salopian) won 4-2 against Paul Richardson.

As the second half began Joe Higgins (25.14) won 4-1 against Lee Harrison but Northumberland weren’t finished as they once again reduced the arrears as Gary Broadhead beat Steven Ritchie 4-1 and Chris Harvey won 4-2 against Eddie Price to go 5-4 up.

A man of the match performance from Paul Rowley (27.75) saw him beat Nick Stephenson 4-2 and a similar 4-2 win for Scott Dockerty over Gary Reed secured the overall victory as the running score for the weekend now stood at 19-16.

The final encounter of the weekend went to Salopian as Jon Mansell beat Scott Brown 4-2 to give the men’s ‘A’ a 7-5 win and take the overall scoreline to 20-16 in Salopian’s favour.

Shropshire began the new season in Division Three of the UKDA National League with a home tie against local rivals Salopian and suffered a 22-14 defeat, their scond encounter was an away game against Montgomery and Radnor.

Saturday began quite well as Nicola Ball and Sophie Fawcett gave Shropshire a 2-0 lead in the ladies ‘B’ game when in turn they defeated Tina James (3-1) and Sam Lloyd (3-0). Sharon Shepherd and Shelly Mulliner recorded 3-0 wins over Jayne Downey and Sara Jones to level the game for the home side only to see Shropshire’s lady of the match Annmarie Williams (14.16) win 3-2 against Charlotte Davies-Jarman to give her team the lead once again and leave the result hinging on the final game.

The final 3-0 result went to Montgomery and Radnor’s Elisa Richardson Morris who accounted for Deana Sheldon to put the final score all level at 3-3.

Shropshire’s men’s ‘B’ team were seeking their first win and they could not have wished for a better opening as they stormed into a 4-0 lead with Melvyn Roberts winning 3-2 against Paul Simister and Chris Hill beating Dan Jones 3-1 before man of the match Jamie Webb won in straight legs against Des Francis with a 23.12 average to take the score along to 3-0. Luke Wildman made it 4-0 when he, despite being taken to a decider by Andrew Peers won 3-2.

Tony Burton with a 3-0 result against Andy Vellender chalked up the hosts first stripe but by the halfway point it was Shropshire who had the commanding 5-1 lead after Will Roberts added his 3-2 win over Paul Ballantyne to their account.

As the second half got underway the away side went further ahead as Kevin Harris beat Steve Rowlands 3-0 and then chalking up the all-important seventh winning game was Dan Downey with his 3-1 success over Frankie Costanzo.

Chris Willard, Phil Austin and Jake Rigney managed to reduce the arrears for the hosts to 7-4 as in turn they won against Brian Hickman (3-0), Paul Penfold (3-0) and Paul Harrison (3-0) but the final score was 8-4 and a win for Shropshire when Rushpal Bhogal won the final game of the day against Terry Williams 3-1.

The ladies ‘A’ team had a game they would want to quickly forget as although they went 1-0 up when Dianne Newton (11.01) won 3-1 against Sue Lewis that would turn out to be their sole winner as Louise Davies beat Jenna-Louise Ball 3-2 before Jane Jones, Heidi Davies and Kelly Butler in turn won 3-1 against Kirsty Jenks, Marie Riggs and Michele Pritchard and with a final 3-2 win for Sally Urwin against Sandra Beardsmore the home team were home and dry with a 5-1 victory.

After a lead of 11-7 following Saturday’s games Shropshire now had been brought back to level terms at 12-12.

Montgomery and Radnor got the first win in the men’s ‘A’ game as John Williams-Jones won 4-1 against Phil Clarke.
