Season two of the UKDA National League has got underway and the early pacesetters in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division are Cornwall following their opening 23-13 home victory over newly promoted Staffordshire. Reigning champions Lancashire were also 23-13 winners playing away against Glamorgan and are placed second while last season’s runners-up Warwickshire for the second successive season beat title rivals Yorkshire, on this occasion the scoreline was 20-16 to put them fourth in the table three points off the top and two behind third placed Hampshire who won 22-14 at London.

In the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division its Dorset who lead the way following their 21-15 win over Sussex with newly promoted Gwynedd on the same 24 points after their 21-15 home win over Gwent. With just one point fewer than the top two teams is third placed Oxfordshire who beat Cambridgeshire 20-16.

Worcestershire and Derbyshire are the top two teams in division one, the former winning 21-15 at home against Somerset while the latter won by the same margin at County Durham. After the top two comes three teams all on 22 points, Leicestershire, Suffolk and Buckinghamshire who in turn accounted for West Midlands, Surrey and Merseyside.

Norfolk top the division two table, their 21-15 win over Gloucestershire giving them a one point lead over both Clwyd and West of England. Clwyd and West of England were 20-16 winners against respective opponents Cumbria and Black Country.

Breconshire and Middlesex are both on 27 points at the top of the division three table both teams recording 24-12 wins in their games against Pembrokeshire and Montgomery and Radnor.

This is how the newly promoted and relegated teams fared in their opening games. Firstly the promoted teams, in the Premier division Kent lost their home tie with Essex 19-17 while Staffordshire went down 23-13 at Cornwall. In the Championship Gwynedd came up trumps handing their visitors Gwent a 21-15 defeat while Cleveland, the other promoted team lost by a close 19-17.

Leicestershire adjusted well to life in division one beating West Midlands, who were relegated from the Championship, 19-17. Not such a good start for County Durham as they lost their home tie with Derbyshire 21-15.

Black Country had a huge success story in their inaugural season in division three running away with the title but they were bought down to earth in their first division two game when they lost 20-16 at West of England. Gloucestershire didn’t have the best of starts in division two either as they finished on the wrong side of a 21-15 result at Norfolk.

The relegated sides from the Premier saw Devon lose 19-17 at home to Humberside while Northamptonshire finished all square at 18-18 at home against Hertfordshire.

Buckinghamshire are looking for a quick return to the Championship as they kicked off their season with a 19-17 home win over Merseyside while West Midlands found the going a little tough and lost by the same scoreline at Leicestershire.

Mixed results for the two teams relegated from division one as Clwyd won 20-16 in their home game with Cumbria and Nottinghamshire lost 19-17 at Tyne and Wear.

The two teams relegated from division two Middlesex and Montgomery and Radnor actually played each other in the season opener with the somewhat convincing 24-12 result going in favour of Middlesex.

As is what has become the norm in county darts Warwickshire began their latest campaign in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League with a fixture against Yorkshire. Last season’s opener saw Warwickshire win 20-16 on Yorkshire’s home board and this season playing on their own board Warwickshire repeated that score.

Saturday saw the ladies ‘B’ storm into a 3-0 lead with Angela Jones winning 3-0 against Lyn Horne, Angela taking the match award for her 22.77 average with winning legs of 16, 27 and 23 darts. Nina Bolt doubled the advantage when she beat Cindy Jennings 3-1 and moving the score nicely along to 3-0 was Chloe McKivett with her 3-0 success against Maria Bower.

From leading 3-0 it then all went a little pear-shaped as Michelle Binns won 3-1 against Wendy Adams, Tracey Heppinstall won 3-2 against Melanie Jones after Jones had come from 2-0 down to 2-2 and securing a share of the points for Yorkshire was Emma Lockwood whose 3-0 win over Lucy Keyte took the final score to 3-3.

Like the ladies ‘B’ it all began well for the men’s ‘B’ as Mark Carter got the proceedings underway with a straight 4-0 win over Paul Gannon. A similar 4-0 win for Dave Hill over Craig Gwynne made it 2-0 for the home side and although Nigel Heydon lost the third leg to Garry Jeffries he won the tie 4-1 to make it 3-0 to Warwickshire.

Despite their lead at the halfway stage of the game the scoreline was level at 3-3 as James Waite beat Karl Reynolds 4-1, Derek Lumley won 4-1 against Martin Tonks and Alex Jacques defeated Lee Miller 4-0.

The second half began in style for the home team as their Scott Hope was involved in a seven legs thriller. Hope won the first leg against Brian Hallas in 17 darts but then lost the next two with Hallas checking out in 20 and 17 darts. The fourth leg saw Hope level in 21 and then go 3-2 up with a second seventeen darts leg. Hallas took the game to a decider when he won the sixth in 18 darts only to see Scott Hope clinch a superb 4-3 victory in 21 darts and at the same time win his team’s match award for his 26.35 average.

Warwickshire 4-3 lead didn’t last long as Steve Blower won 4-1 against Adam Hancock and Graham Elvidge beat Carl Green by the same 4-1 scoreline to put Yorkshire 5-4 up with three to play.

Mark Strong was taken the full seven legs distance and had his lead cancelled out three times by Neil Ward before he won the decider and the game 4-3 to level the running score at 5-5. Strong became the only the eleventh player in Warwickshire’s history to record a TEN darts game when in the third leg he went 2-1 up hitting 180,140,165 and then checking out on double eight, FANTASTIC darts well done Mark.

Ian McFarlane looked all set to clinch at the worst a draw for Warwickshire when he opened up leads of 1-0 and 2-1 against Dave Calvert but it was the latter who won the last three legs for a 4-3 win, then giving the away team the 7-5 result was Callum Hall when he won the last game of the day against Mark Martin 4-2.

Sunday’s ladies game didn’t get off to a good start as Beau Greaves beat Natalie Gilbert 3-0 and Linda Porter won 3-2 against Donna Pinch after Pinch had won the first two legs.

It took a 3-2 win from Caroline Pike to stop the Yorkshire charge, Caroline beating Sally Whiting before Sara Mortimer and Jayne Conboy took Yorkshire’s lead to an overall winning margin, Mortimer winning 3-0 against Tammy Montgomery and Conboy beating Marian Conway 3-2 to take the score to 4-1 to the away side.

The final ladies game was on by Sue Gulliver, Sue winning 3-2 against Giffy Khaosoi earning her the match award for her 19.44 average and making the final score a little more respectable at 4-2.

Trailing 14-10 after three of the four games had been completed, something special was required from the men’s ‘A’ and that is exactly what they provided, although it wasn’t looking that way after the opening three games. Steve Hine lost the first game 4-2 to Keith Flint and although Wayne Mynard came from 2-0 and 3-1 down to win 4-3 against Ash Taylor, Yorkshire went 2-1 up in the third when their Lewis Pride won 4-0 against Prakash Jiwa.

Matty Washbrooke levelled the game when he accounted for Mick Ridge with a 4-2 result and with a straight 4-0 win for Jamie Atkins over Carl Wilkinson the home team were in the lead for the first time in the game.

By the break Warwickshire were 4-2 up as Gareth Braham rounded off the half with a 4-2 win over Jacob Gwynne.

Kevin Dowling gave the home side the perfect start to the second half winning in four straight legs against Trevor Burkhill. Jamie Hughes then lost the opening leg of his game against former Warwickshire player Mark McGeeney in fifteen darts but he moved up a gear to level with an eleven darts leg hitting 140,180,135 and finishing on 46. Hughes then added winning legs of 14,20 and 16 darts to seal a 4-1 victory and with a tremendous average of 32.04 earn himself the man of the match award.

Warwickshire’s new addition this season Chris Wickenden was on at number nine, he made short work of his opponent Tom Sykes as he beat him in straight legs in 16,19,15 and 16 darts for another superb average of 30.36 and at the same time chalking up the overall winning game for the men’s ‘A’ as they now had a 7-2 lead.

For the third consecutive game Warwickshire recorded a 30 plus average as Noel Grant won 4-2 against Josh Clough with winning legs of 16,11,18 and 18 darts for a 30.57 average.

Tom Martin was taken the full seven legs distance by Martin Atkins but won the seventh and final leg in 15 darts with an 84 checkout and with a final 4-1 success for Jack Wareing over John Walton Warwickshire men’s ‘A’ won 10-2 giving an overall result for the weekend of 20-16 to the home team. Another cracking start to the season.

A belated congratulations to Warwickshire County Darts Organisation player Noel Grant who received £250 as the Elite Premier Division Men’s Player of the Year for the 2021- 2022 season. Well done Noel.

Following their relegation for the Championship last season West Midlands were hoping to get the new campaign in division one off to a good start and ultimately a quick return to the Championship but that’s not exactly what happened as they travelled to take on Leicestershire who were also new to division one after their promotion from division two last season.

Saturday saw the ladies finish all square at 3-3 with Gemma Barrett (19.52) taking the West Midlands award and Angie Sheffield (21.78) achieving the same for Leicestershire.

The 7-5 men’s ‘B’ result went to the visiting West Midlands with their top man being Ryan O’Connor (28.36) while Derek Allsopp (26.11) was the host’s winner.

Once again on Sunday the ladies couldn’t find a winner and the result was 3-3 with the match awards going to Jacqueline Maiden (16.53, West Midlands) and Shannon Reeve (18.66, Leicestershire).

The home team’s men’s ‘A’ were 8-4 winners to take the overall score for the weekend to 19-17 in Leicestershire’s favour. The men’s ‘A’ awards went to Richard Platt (28.94, West Midlands) and for Leicestershire Grant Brown (29.91).

Last season Black Country ran away with the division three title in the UKDA National League finishing with a huge advantage of 22 points over runners-up Gloucestershire. Their opening fixture in division two was an away game against West of England who narrowly escaped relegation to division three last season but despite that Black Country found life in the higher division more difficult than they had experienced in the one a little lower.

Saturday was all about the hosts as the ladies won 4-2 and the men 9-3 with Deb Adams (15.16) and Paul Meyer (25.82) taking the respective match awards. Top players for the Black Country ‘B’ teams were Grace Angell (15.85) and James Hykin (24.75).

Sunday’s games saw the Black Country fare much better as the ladies earned a 3-3 draw with Steph Konya (20.72) their lady of the match and Dan Nicholls (29.18) the man of the match in their 8-4 win. Taking the ‘A’ awards for West of England were Abbie Champ-Fitzgerald (19.27) and Matt Jackson (28.13).

The Salopian County Darts Organisation began their second UKDA National League campaign in division three with what will be there shortest away trip of the season to Albrighton as they took on local rivals Shropshire. Keen to improve on last season’s maiden 19-17 home win over Shropshire, Salopian handed out fourteen debuts for the first encounter of the 2022 / 23 season. It was one of those debutants, Whitchurch’s Hayley McGuiness (14.47) who was first on for Salopian and she was a little unfortunate to go down to a 3-1 defeat against Sophie Fawcett (14.12). Shropshire took the next two games to open up an early 3-0 lead before Salopians responded taking the remaining three games whilst conceding just one leg to level up at three each. Claire Boyle (13.52) and Tracey Dean (12.96) had debut wins sandwiched between a lady of match performance by Alison Gallagher (15.34) to conclude an even ladies ‘B’ encounter.

It was essential Salopian capitalized on the momentum gained going into the Saturday afternoons Men’s ‘B’ match and sure enough Steve O’Callaghan (19.27) put Salopian’s ahead for the first time in the game. That progress was checked in the following game when Shropshire’s Brian Hickman (21.76) recorded a 17 darter in the deciding leg against Nigel Neale (22.05) who had shown grit to come from 2-0 down. Eric Ryan (20.04) restored the lead for Salopian before Luke Wildman (24.62) put in a man of the match performance for Shropshire defeating Mark Crutchley (22.96) including two maximums) in another game that went the way of the hosts in the deciding fifth leg. Mark Jones (23.20) responded for Salopian who crucially took the following two games through Paul Ashworth (22.85) and Adrian Logsdale (22.81) to give Salopian an overall lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Darren Lane (21.27) and Shaun Pryce (21.52) secured further wins for Salopian who took the men’s ‘B’ game 7-5 to lead 10-8 overnight.

The Ladies ‘A’ sidewere keen to consolidate the slim advantage going into day two and raced into a 4-0 lead dropping just three legs in the process.  Rachel Williams (12.66), Sarah Roberts (20.59), Steph Clarke (15.89) and Evonne Taylor (18.98) did the damage although Shropshire checked their progress through Becky Harris (14.42) before Sue Lane (14.21) rounded off a fine Salopian ladies ‘A’ performance that saw them triumph 5-1 and extend the overall lead to 15-9.

That lead was reduced after Phil Clarke (24.35) took the first men’s ‘A’ game for Shropshire, but the Salopians replied with back to back 4-0 wins from Eddie Price and Jon Mansell who both averaged over 25 per dart. Steve Lynch (22.90) levelled for Shropshire before another three winning games for Salopian’s Matt Elsey (23.96), Kacey Jones (26.51) and man of the match Paul Rowley (28.20) which also secured the overall victory for Salopian.

Shropshire despite having lost the fixture responded valiantly taking the next three games which included a stunning performance by Richard Parker who had the highest average of the match 29.27 per dart. The final two games went the way of Salopian thanks to Terry Nash (25.69) and John Roberts (25.13) which secured a 7-5 victory for the men’s ‘A’ side, and an overall 22-14 for the Salopians. (Thanks go to Che Kerin)
