The top two teams in the Premier Division of the UKDA National League held on to their places after playing scheduled fixture number nine, Lancashire extending their lead from thirty to thirty-six points with a very convincing 27-9 home win over Cornwall, while second placed Lincolnshire had a closer 21-15 home win against Sussex leaving them with game in hand on Lancashire. Reigning champions Yorkshire are currently third in the division on 185 points, some forty-four short of Lancashire after adding on their latest result, a 20-16 win at Suffolk.

A 20-16 home win over Essex has seen Dorset move off the foot of the table, up two places in the table to ninth with Hertfordshire dropping into the bottom spot after their 26-10 defeat at Warwickshire. Cornwall’s defeat sees them drop into the bottom two, their 124 points just three more than Hertfordshire and six short of Dorset.

Top of the men’s A’ averages was Suffolk’s Stephen Burton who in his 4-1 win over Yorkshire’s Jack Hill, he averaged 33.79. The top ladies ‘A’ average went to Lancashire’s Ally Smith, she averaged 24.86 in her 3-1 win over Cornwall’s Teresa Brookshaw. In the ‘B’ games, 30.83 was the top men’s average which was achieved by Yorkshire’s James Waite in his 4-0 win over Suffolk’s Wayne Hammond. Warwickshire’s Hannah Meek topped the ladies ‘B’ averages, a 23.86 average in her 3-0 win over Hertfordshire’s Rachel Egleton.

A 23-13 win at Gwent keeps Middlesex in pole position in the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division, but with Humberside having a bye, they dropped from second place to eighth on 152 points, some thirty-three points adrift of Middlesex. Taking over in the number two spot is Hampshire, they moved up one place in the table following their 25-11 home win over Cambridgeshire to leave them nine points behind Middlesex. London had a narrow 19-17 win at Kent to put them third in the division on 166 points, ten fewer than Hampshire and nineteen short of Middlesex.

The bottom three positions remain the same with Oxfordshire bottom, then Cambridgeshire and just above them Cheshire with only eleven points separating the three teams.

Cheshire’s Keith Croxford had a 4-1 win over Oxfordshire’s Pete Hall and topped the men’s ‘A’ averages with his 27.39. Wendy Reinstadtler (Middlesex) was in top form beating Gwent’s Amanda Rosser 3-1 to take the ladies ‘A’ award for her 24.55 average. The top men’s ‘B’ player was Hampshire’s Ady Wright, who took the award for his 24.73 average in a straight 4-0 win over Cambridgeshire’s Tony Chapman while the top lady for the ‘B’ sides was London’s Holly Glet who won 3-1 against Kent’s Cara Broad with a 21.23 average.

A bye cost Worcestershire the leadership of the L-Style Division One and saw them drop to third place on 177 points, and although seventeen points fewer than new leaders Somerset, they do have a game in hand. Somerset moved up from second place following their 21-15 home win over Clwyd giving them a total of 194 points. Leicestershire, also moved up one place to second, taking their points tally to 190 after their 23-13 win at Devon, and like Worcestershire, they too have a game in hand on Somerset.

Derbyshire’s 19-17 home win over Berkshire was enough to see them move off the foot of the table and be replaced by their opponents whose 125 points is two fewer than their hosts. Staffordshire are just above Derbyshire but have a seventeen point’s advantage over them.

Staffordshire may have lost their home tie with Merseyside 20-16 but their Stuart Livesley recorded the top men’s ‘A’ average for the L-Style Division One, a 31.81 average in his 4-0 success against Merseyside’s Tom Lockyer, The ladies ‘A’ award went to Clwyd’s Rachel Kingdon who won 3-0 against Somerset’s Shelley Cotterell with a 26.37 average. Black Country’s Wayne Hobday was top of the men’s ‘B’ charts, his 29.47 average coming in a 4-0 win over Salopian’s Carl Wear while Leicestershire’s ladies ‘B’ opener Janine Gough, won 3-0 against Devon’s Alison Gabriel-Wotton and took the top average award for her 20.88 average.

A 24-12 win at Buckinghamshire has seen Norfolk increase their lead at the top of the Division two table from eighteen to thirty-one points.  Formerly second placed Nottinghamshire finished on the wrong side of the 25-11 result at Tyne and Wear and as a consequence drop two places to fourth with 180 points, three fewer than their hosts who take over in second place with Cumbria holding on to the number three position with 182 points, after their 20-16 home win over Northumberland.

A 19-17 home win over County Durham has lifted Surrey away from the foot of the table, they move up two places with Buckinghamshire dropping into the bottom spot on 112 points, the same number as the team just above them West of England, Surrey are on 120 points.

Northumberland’s Mark Stephenson had a 4-3 win over Cumbria’s Ronnie Kirk which earned him the top men’s ‘A’ average award as he averaged 30.46, the ladies ‘A’ award going to Cumbria’s Liz Humphries who had a 3-1 success against Phonsawan Whillis (Northumberland) and averaged 23.46. West of England’s Matt Jackson took the men’s ‘B’ award for his 31.99 average which he chalked up in his 4-1 win over Cleveland’s Ben Robinson. A 20.04 average saw Kirsty Gibbs (Buckinghamshire) top the ladies ‘B’ averages as she accounted for Norfolk’s Claire Broom with a 3-1 result.

In Division Three, Shropshire are enjoying their best-ever season as they hold on to pole position with a total of 207 points after adding on their latest 22-14 win away against Pembrokeshire. Despite the win Shropshire’s advantage has been reduced from sixteen to twelve points as second placed Gwynedd chalked up a 26-19 home win over Gloucestershire. Wirral lost third place after losing 24-12 at Breconshire and drop to fifth with 166 points. The win for Breconshire sees them move up one place to third, their 177 points thirty fewer than Norfolk and eighteen less than Gwynedd.

At the other end of the table there is no change in the bottom five places, Isle of Wight remain rooted at the foot of the table with ninety-nine points, Montgomery and Radnor just above them with 110 points, then comes Pembrokeshire with 136 points. Third from bottom Gloucestershire are on 138 points, they are fourteen points behind sixth in the table Wiltshire.

Breconshire took both the men’s and ladies ‘A’ team top averages, in turn defeating Wirral’s Steve Maish and Kim Holden, Flew winning 4-0 with a 31.31 average and Waters-Evans winning 3-0 with a 24.64 average. Shropshire’s Daniel Downey was the top men’s ‘B’ player, winning 4-0 against Pembrokeshire’s Steve Smith with a 26.03 average, while the ladies ‘B’ top player was Louise Williams (Gwynedd) who had a 3-1 success against Sharon Brewer (Gloucestershire) and averaged 17.29.

Warwickshire’s penultimate home fixture in the Premier Division of the UKDA National League was a tie against Hertfordshire and with both teams in the bottom half of the table points were badly required by both to lift them away from the relegation zone.

Warwickshire could not have wished for a better start to the weekend as the ladies ‘B’ romped to a 6-0 victory, all started by lady of the match Hannah Meek who won her game against Rachel Egleton 3-0 and averaged 23.86. Lucy Shepherd and Donna Pinch, in turn won 3-1 against Laura Camp and Josie Howard before the hosts last three players added their wins without dropping a single leg. Taking the final score along to a 6-0 whitewash were Kirsty Hinchliffe, Jodie Rigg and Macy Gibbons who defeated their respective opponents Tracy Banks, Laura Divall and Libby Page 3-0.

The men’s ‘B’ match was a game of two halves as Warwickshire won the first half 5-1 and Hertfordshire the second half, again 5-1. Dave Atkins opened up for the home side, winning 4-0 against Tony Cox, William Naylor doubling the lead with his 4-1 success over Luke Arber. The home team’s man of the match Dave Hill was on at number three, he had a 4-2 win over Paul Squirrell with a 28.35 average. With another 4-2 result, Jnr Joyce made it 4-0 when he defeated Lee Barrow, all before the visitors got their first stripe on the board when Jack Pledger beat Lee Miller 4-2. Rounding off the half with yet another 4-2 scoreline was Mark Carter whose win against Keith Arber gave Warwickshire their 5-1 lead.

As the second half got underway, Hertfordshire got their second winner when Sam Cook won 4-2 against Mark Martin but a 4-3 win from Karl Reynolds over Jack Divall guaranteed the home side of at the worst a share of the points. A share of the points is what Warwickshire men’s ‘B’ got as the last four games all went to Hertfordshire, Terry Andrews winning 4-2 against Mark Strong, Ricky Howard beat Keith Deeley 4-0 and with 4-2 wins for Daniel Wood and Liam Divall against Jason Meek and Jason Price the final score was all even at 6-6.

As were the ladies ‘B’, the ladies ‘A’ were also in top form storming to a winning 4-0 lead as Courtney Hine got the proceedings underway with her 3-0 win over Laura Camp and lady of the match Caroline Pike made it 2-0 when she won 3-1 against Jessica Page with a 22.16 average. Nina Bolt assured a draw with her 3-1 win over Jo Kitchen before Wendy Adams made sure of the win with her 3-0 success over Debs Jones. Rachel Egleton pulled one back for the away side when she won 3-1 against Kacie O’Connor but the final score was 5-1 to Warwickshire with captain Marian Conway winning the final game against Vicky Rannow 3-0.

Hertfordshire were quickest off the mark in the men’s ‘A’ match, Hayden Appleby winning 4-3 against Kevin Dowling. However the lead was soon reversed as Dave Hill won 4-1 against Luke Arber and Sam Price accounted for Matt Creed with a straight 4-0 result and super 32.32 average to earn himself the match award. Parity was restored in the fourth when Paul Squirrell beat Matty Washbrooke 4-2 before both Jack Wareing and Nigel Heydon added their 4-0 wins over respective opponents Rex Cole and Lloyd Wintle to give the home team a 4-2 lead at the midway point of the match.

Warwickshire men’s ‘A’ went further ahead as the second session got underway, Gareth Braham winning 4-0 against Jon Creed before Wayne Mynard made it 6-2 with his 4-2 win against Jack Pledger. The all-important seventh win came in the ninth game when Noel Grant added his straight 4-0 win over Daniel Varney to the home team’s tally and with a 4-3 success for Ryan Jackson against Steve Beasley the score was 8-2 to Warwickshire. The visitors got their third winner in the penultimate encounter, Matt Robinson just getting the 4-3 edge against Martin Tonks before the final score was taken to 9-3 when anchor-man Steve Hine won 4-1 against Bradley Clark.

The overall score for the weekend was a 26-10 for Warwickshire which saw them move up two places in the table to fifth with 158 points, while Hertfordshire dropped to the foot of the table on 121 points.

———————————

One-time leaders of the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division West Midlands had a bye in the previous round of fixtures and dropped to fourth place, they were hoping for a good result away to Northamptonshire to see them to return to the top position. On current form it looked as though West Midlands could get the result they wanted as they were fourth on 147 points from six games and their hosts seventh on 138 from eight games.

The weekend did not start too well as the ladies ‘B’ lost the opening three games as Gemma Button, Lindsey Wingell and Lexi Jayne Rooksby in turn won against Tara Simmons-Fullwood (3-0), Sarah Maybury (3-0) and Gemma Barrett (3-1). Hannah Davies stopped the rot with her lady of the match performance against Taylor Johnson, winning 3-0 with an 18.03 average. The game was won in the fifth when Jackie White won 3-2 against Shellbie Guest, the final result 4-2 to Northamptonshire as Kelly Aston gave West Midlands their second winner in the last game, a 3-2 success over Hollie McKain.

Like the ladies ‘B’, it was not a good start for the men’s ‘B’ as Callum Parkes was their sole winner in the first half of the match. Lee Rose gave the home side the early lead when he won the opener against Ian Stanton 4-3, Callum Parkes then squared the game with his similar 4-3 win over Chris Shipley only to see the hosts leading 5-1 at the break after Dean Joseph won 4-2 against Mark Craddock, Andy Wakeling beat Kieran O’Mahoney 4-3, Chris Jones won 4-2 against Rob Thompson and Liam Johnson won 4-1 against Connor Lucas.

As the second half got underway West Midlands got their second winner, Dean Fullwood winning 4-0 against Steve Stanbridge. Dan Hutchinson put the home side into an unassailable 6-2 lead when he beat Jordan Craig 4-2 before West Midlands had their best run of the match, winning three-in-a-row thanks to Cameron Baird who beat Jamie Preston 4-0 and Sean Craig who defeated Mick Rooksby 4-1, Craig taking the match award for his 25.20 average. Making it a trio of wins was Justin Evans, his 4-1 success over Paul Walker taking the score now to 6-5, everything resting on the final game of the day. Lining up for Northamptonshire was Callum Johnson and for West Midlands, Martin Price. The game went the full seven legs distance with Johnson the 4-3 winner to put the final score at 7-5 to the home team.

The first two games of the ladies ‘A’ match both finished with 3-1 scorelines and both went to Northamptonshire, Ellie Moore and Angela Barrow in turn winning against Eloise Milburn and Jacqueline Trott. Jacqueline Maiden stopped the home team’s charge when she won 3-1 against Amy Chappell, only to see Debbie Dexter make it 3-1 to the hosts when she won, once again 3-1, against Jade Wellings. Keeping the West Midlands in with a chance of a share of the spoils was their lady of the match Evonne Taylor, who won 3-0 against Rebecca Rose with a 21.78 average and with a final 3-2 win for Hannah Davies over Rebecca Langridge, the final score was all-square at 3-3.

Trailing 14-10, the West Midlands required a 9-3 victory from the men’s ‘A’ for an overall win, those hopes disappeared as the first half drew to a close. Jamie Elliott gave the home team the first win of the men’s ‘A’ game when he beat Dean Fullwood 4-3, Ryan O’Connor levelled the game with his 4-1 win over Martin Biggs, but 4-2 wins from Michael Feasey and John Regan against Adam Teasdale and Neil Pointon put Northamptonshire 3-1 up and although Daniel Hands added his 4-3 win over Joe Judkins to the visitors tally, the score at the break was 4-2 to the hosts as Duane Small won the last game of the half against Mark Craddock 4-2.

The second half began with a man of the match performance for West Midlands when Richard Platt won 4-3 against Darren Williamson with a 28.90 average. The cheers were short-lived however as Antony Richardson won 4-3 against Shaun Carroll and Ben Goodger beat Jon Platt 4-1 to put Northamptonshire 6-3 up. Jack Aldridge (West Midlands) had a straight 4-0 win over John Gent but with a 4-2 win for Phil Coward over Gavin Baker followed by a 4-3 win for Luke Smith against Will Beaden, the final score was an 8-4 win for the home team.

The 22-14 defeat has seen West Midlands drop one place in the table to fifth with 161 points and their opponents move up three places to fourth with 163 points, however West Midlands have two games in hand on Northamptonshire and one in hand on all of the top three teams, Middlesex, Hampshire and London and in turn trail each of them by twenty-four, fifteen and five points.

Match eight in the L-Style Division One brought together Salopian and Black Country, the former going into the game placed sixth on 134 points and the latter eighth on 130 points.

The opening win in the ladies ‘B’ match went to Black Country as Sarah-Jane Parker won 3-0 against Rachael Williams and in the process won the lady of the match award for her 20.31 average, but from 1-0 up the away side then found themselves trailing and lost 4-1. Anna Peatroy had a straight 3-0 win over Sarah Tromans, Emma Tapp beat Leanne Wilson 3-1, Sue Lane won 3-0 against Libby Gowen and Kate Titley not only won 3-2 against Doreen Hunt but also won the match award for Salopian with her 17.83 average. The final game went to Black Country’s Jodie Rowlands who had a narrow 3-2 win over Hayley McGuinness to put the final score at 4-2 to Salopian.

As in the ladies ‘B’ game, the Black Country men’s ‘B’ were also first out the blocks as Mark Rollinson won 4-2 against Andy Gilbert. Matt Elsey (Salopian) levelled the game with his 4-3 win over Neil Steventon and with a further 4-0 win for Ash Hilditch against Luke Messer, the home side were 2-1 up. Ian Townsend pulled one back for the visitors when he won 4-0 against Jack Darby and with a 4-3 win for Matthew Lloyd over Danny Humphries Black Country were 3-2 up and by the halfway stage that lead was 4-2 after man of the match Wayne Hobday added his 4-0 win over Carl Wear with a 29.47 average.

The hosts were quick to reply as the second session got underway, Sam Morris reducing the arrears with his 4-3 win over Danny Chiswell and man of the match Paul Rowley levelling the score at 4-4 when he won 4-1 against Nick Whitehouse with a 27.74 average. Restoring Black Country’s lead was Sam Bissell, his 4-1 success over James Mansell taking the score to 5-4. The lead however was short-lived as Tony Burton made it 5-5 when he won 4-3 against Andy Garratt. With two games to play and the score level at 5-5, the last two games of the day both went to Black Country as Rich Bowen beat Ben Ellis Dean 4-2 and Mark Jones won by the same 4-2 margin against Ian Evans to give Black Country a 7-5 win.

The ladies ‘A’ game was a replica of the ladies ‘B’ with Black Country going 1-0 up, then trailing 4-1 and finishing 4-2 down. Grace Angell’s 3-1 win over Karen Weston not only put her team one up but also earned her the match award for her 14.71 average. Then came a quartet of wins for the hosts as Tracy Dean won 3-1 against Heather Wright, Chloe Ames had a 3-2 success over Stella Sims, Emma Hayward beat Abbey Hunt 3-0 and Salopian’s lady of the match Steph Clarke accounted for Tammy Chance with a straight 3-0 win and 22.77 average. Kirsty Shaughnessy (Black Country) won the final game against Danni Pritchard 3-1 to see Salopian ladies, once again win 4-2.

With an advantage of 13-11, Salopian’s men’s ‘A’ now could finish with a draw and still have an overall victory for the weekend. All of the first half games went against the first throw advantage with Salopian taking the lead three times and on each occasion being pegged back to level terms. Winners for Salopian were Dave Bayton who beat Paul Wells 4-3, Jake B. Smith with his similar 4-3 win against Jordan Grainger and Andy Evans, who once again was taken to a decider and won 4-3 against George Willetts. Black Country winners were Dan Home who had a 4-2 success against Jamie Kynaston, Steve Jones with his 4-3 win over Jon Mansell and Jamie Rollinson who won 4-0 against Dean Rogers to give a 3-3 score at the midway point.
