West Midlands star Wayne Jones, with a final win over Warwickshire’s Kevin Dowling, earned himself an early Christmas present when just prior to the festive break he won the Birmingham “2000” Open and in the process £400. In the recent Midland Open at the Barrass Social Club, Coventry he almost made it a fantastic double.
With wins over Shayne Burgess, Dave Weston and Andy Smith in the early rounds, Jones squared up to another Warwickshire man, Colin Fowler. In the best of nine legs final he raced into what appeared to be a commanding 3-0 lead. Fowler then stepped up a gear and with winning legs of 18-17-15-17 and 22 darts he wrapped up the issue with a superb 5-3 victory and the first prize of £750. Jones however, more than covered his day out with a cool £350.

Three teams still remain undefeated in the Longwood Winter League, Two Gates Club, Railway and Wilnecote Club. In their most recent fixtures Two Gates werre in superb form to beat, previously unbeaten Jolly Sailor 8-0, while Railway and Wilnecote had 7-1 successes against respective opponents Hopwas Club and Royal Oak (Kingsbury).

Warwickshire will continue their premiership campaign in the BDO Inter Counties Championship on the weekend of the 20th/21st January. The first match of 2001 will be an away game against Yorkshire, which will be played at The Granby W.M. Club, Broomhouse Lane, Edlington, Doncaster.
