Local counties Warwickshire and West Midlands have been involved in the BDO British Champions Cup which was staged at the former’s headquarters the Belgrave Sports and Social Club, Tamworth. In the men’s competition the two counties battled their way through to the final where they played each other. Wins from Ian Murdock, Steve Cain, Colin Fowler and Carl Betteridge ensured a 4-3 victory for Warwickshire. Winners for the West Midlands were Dave Robbins, Dave Pritchard and Steve Parkes. Warwickshire now go forward to the grand finals at Trentham Gardens, Stoke on Trent on Sunday 5th November.

West Midlands made their exit in the ladies event in the last four where they were beaten 5-2 by Cambridgeshire. Warwickshire once again made the final but narrowly lost out 4-3 to Cambridgeshire. Wins by Sue Deery, Carol Weston and Jane Coffman were not quite enough as D.Greatbach, B.Gostling, S.Greatbach and S.Edwards put Cambridge into the finals.

No fewer than 40 scores of a ton or more were scored in the first division fixture between Bartley Green Social Club and Hillyfields with the former getting the all important scoreline of 7-2. In division two there was an upset for the leaders Highlander. After setting up a 4-2 lead at home to Avenue Social, the visitors bounced back to snatch a tremendous 5-4 win. Second placed Hobsons Choice took full advantage to reduce the arrears on Highlander by beating the Coronation Club 7-2.

Division three’s top team the Cock Inn had a convincing 8-1 victory as hosts to Highlander Ladies. Meanwhile, another team chasing honours, Harborne Stores chalked up a 9-0 whitewash in their home tie with the Travellers Rest.

Saltley Amateur Gardeners had a good 6-2 home win over EBAHA in division one of the Sheldon and District Summer League, but it was the visitors who provided the highest score, that of 180 from M.Ashbrook. P.Burnham was another player to hit a maximum as his division two team Iron Horse gained a 5-3 home success against Mackadown Social. Two other players to hit the three treble twenties were A.Wilcock (British Telecom Club) in division four and in the fourth division T.Bunting of Glebe Community Centre.

Heathway, in division four were the week’s biggest winners, storming to an 8-0 victory at Silver Wings. Not far behind were the Malt Shovel who beat their division three counterparts Shard End RBL 7-1.

The semi finals of the Knockout Cup and the Upside Down Cup were on the agenda for the Small Heath Summer League. The KO Cup produced a top of the table clash between the Custard House Bar, who are currently top, and second placed McDwyers. The 6-3 verdict went in favour of the Custard House Bar. Black Horse won the other match against Sheldon Heath Flights 5-4.

Making up the final of the Upside Down Cup will be the Bear who had a close 5-4 win over Red Hill and Saltley Flights who had a more comfortable 7-2 success.

The Sheldon and District Ladies League are desperate for one or more teams to join them for the forthcoming season which is scheduled to start on Monday October 2nd. Teams require a minimum of seven players with matches being played on either Monday’s, Tuesday’s Wednesday’s or Thursday’s.
