The penultimate fixture in the Forest of Arden Winter League produced a major shock with Red Arrows, who have lead the field all season went down 5-4 at home to the Harvester. A tremendous 7-2 win by Hobs Meadow at Stechford Social as taken Hobs into pole position, level on points with Arrows but with a superior average. Congratulations to Alan Grainger who has dramatically won the Bass Breweries and Bristan Ltd sponsored Minworth Social Individual League title. Going into the final week of games Alan Mayell was top of the table. Grainger kicked off with a 3-0 win against Nigel Groves and followed that with a 2-1 success over Paul Spiers. Then came the crunch match, Alan Grainger versus Alan Mayell. Mayell hit 4×100, Grainger replied with 180,140 and 3×100 which was enough to give him the 2-1 verdict plus the title with 106 points, just two more than Mayell who had to content himself with the runners up spot.
Grainger made it a fantastic double when he followed up his league title with the league’s singles knockout championship. In the quarter finals Grainger and Mayell met again, the former dropping his first legs of the competition but nevertheless winning 4-3, he then beat Mark Franks 5-3 and won the competition with a 6-3 win against Gordon Clinton.
