The second round of the Wadsworth Cup was on the agenda for the Harborne and District Winter League. Biggest winners of the round were Bartley Green Social Club, Raven and Midland Red, who all won 8-1. Bartley and Raven had respective wins against Highlander and Travellers Rest, while Midland Red defeated Bartley Green Social Flights, K.Harding recording a 160 break in the process. P.Gilliland (Avenue Social) was another player to break with 160 as his team won 5-4 in a cracking match with Kings Highway.

Other fixtures saw R.Kinsella (Bell) chalk up a nine darts game as his side won 6-3 against Hobsons Choice, Londonderry winning by a similar margin against Hillyfields ‘A’ with K.Gethin hitting a maximum for the victors.

In the preliminary round of the league’s Wadsworth Consolation Cup Weoley Castle hammered Highlander Ladies 8-1 and with a 6-3 scoreline the Brook accounted for Stores.

There was a surprise in the Forest of Arden Winter League when top of the table Red Arrows suffered their first defeat of the campaign in any event. Silver Wings were the team to provide the shock beating Arrows 8-7 in the quarter finals of the Team Doubles Cup. Other teams progressing to the semi’s were Mackadown Social, who also had somewhat of an unexpected 10-5 victory over Hobs Meadow and Harvester who took out Hunters Moon by 12-3. Heart of England booked their last four place with a bye.

Paul Griffiths (Tyseley WMC) was in top form in the Acocks Green Winter League, helping his team to a 7-2 success against Red Rooster with a superb seven darts leg. Paul broke with 160 followed up with a score of 113 and checked out on double fourteen. The result keeps Tyseley in pole position but the chasing pair Journeys End and Shirley Legion had respective wins over Moonraker 8-1 and Britannia Arrows 7-2. D.Wright (Journeys End) hit a maximum as did C.Okey (Brewers Arms) in his side’s 6-3 win at home to the Plume of Feathers.

The Belgrave Sports and Social Club, Tamworth was the venue for the Warwickshire County Mens play off of the Gold Cup Pairs competition. A total of 41 doubles turned up for the knockout but it was the Bedworth duo Alan Sharratt and Kevin Dowling, who were successful and go through to the next round.

Losing finalists were David Harris and Lance Thompson (Coventry) who accounted for Bedworth pairing Steve Sharpe and Tony Sharpe in the semi’s while the eventual winners defeated Martin Brown and Gary Podmore (Tamworth) in their last four encounter.

The finals of the Bedworth Gateway Open were again held at the Saunders Hall WMC, Bedworth. Taking the men’s title were the Chase Inn, Brownhills with a final 4-1 victory over the Six in Hand from Gwent. Winners for the Chase were Joe Biggs, Ian Jones, Tom Aldridge and Clive Francis, Mike Shipsey was the Gwent teams sole winner.

The ladies final went to the wire. After trailing 3-1 with Lesley Newcombe the only winner, the Vauxhall Sports and Social (Birmingham) bounced back to level terms with the Air Balloon (Bristol) thanks to further wins from Mo Jennings amd Terri Bellamy. However, the Bristol side who had had wins from Marie Geaney, Sue Smith and Louise Perry, wrapped up the issue with a last gasp 2-1 win by Sonia Tibbate after her opponent Sue Deery had failed on her finishing doubles.

In the Premier Division of the BDO Inter Counties Championship, Warwickshire will be travelling south this weekend to take on Cambridgeshire. Hopes are high, after their victory over Staffordshire, for a second successive win, which would be the first time this season Warwickshire had managed two in a row.
