A premier division away game against Lancashire in the Riley’s BDO Inter County Championships was never going to be an easy one for Warwickshire after losing 22-14 at home to them last season. The result, despite not winning was however a better result as the hosts finished 20-16 winners.

The only defeat of the weekend was the 9-3 reversal of the men’s ‘A’ side, Ian McFarlane (28.26) their top man. The ‘B’ team were 7-5 winners, with Matthew Edgar’s super 31.01 average taking the match award.

It was better news for the ladies teams who have both been struggling this season, each of the recording a 3-3 draw. Ladies of the match were Trina Gulliver (26.37) for the ‘A’ and Lisa Whitmore (19.71) for the ‘B’.

In division one West Midlands hosted next to bottom of the promotion table County Durham, a game which the home team really would have been expected to win and one which would have lifted away from the lower region of the table.

Paul Price (27.69) took the match award in Saturday’s ‘B’ game, but his side went down 7-5. The ladies ‘B’ recorded their third draw in five games, with Heather Wright (17.71) making it four out of five award wins.

The men’s ‘A’ side had a 7-5 win, Nick Fullwell’s tremendous 32.09 average earning him the team’s award. The ladies ‘A’, similar to the ‘B’ finished all square at 3-3, Jackie Crew (20.04) their top player.

The Four Oaks and District League staged their early rounds of the Richard Winslow Pairs, sponsored by Central Container Services at two venues, Riley’s Snooker Club and the Red Lion.

Winners at the snooker club were, W.Mynard and M.Archer in an all Nomads final. The runners up were, T.Frost and J.Burdett 2-0. Individual achievements on the night were, T.Frost (The Nomads) had a 160 break and a 180, N.Robbins, also from the Nomads hit a maximum.

Winners at the Red Lion were the Sutton Sports pairing of M.Wild and M.Ashton, with C.Millward jnr and M.McFall (The Fox Flights) the 2-1 losers. M.Ashton (Sutton Sports) and C.Packer (The Fox Flights) both hit a 180.

Saltley Amateur Gardeners maintained a four point’s lead at the top of the premier division in the Sheldon and District Winter League with a 5-4 home win over fourth in the table Crown at Olton. Crown at Shard End kept the pressure on Saltley with a convincing 8-1 win over Sheldon Dukes.

Division one leaders Red Lion Flights suffered a setback as they lost only their second game in 14 when they went down 6-3 at Castle Vale Residents Association, who are fifth in the table. Fortunately for Red Lion their nearest rivals, Banbury Club lost 5-4 away to Forget-Me-Not, placed sixth in the table.

George V remain four points ahead of Willclare Sports and Social with a 7-2 win away to Riley’s Wings, Willclare winning by the same margin at Highwood ‘B’.

John Young (Devil’s Club) was in top form in the Camp Hill League’s Singles Competition despite losing in round two to L.Chant from Bordesley Labour Cub. John, together with Mark Richards (Scruffy Ringers) recorded the highest break of 120, he had the highest score of 174, the best finish of 104 and the least darts of nine. Not bad going, sweeping up all of the individual performances of the night.

The winners from the second round going into the finals were, Mark Richards (Scruffy Ringers), Mick Harris, M.O’Donnell and L.Chant (Bordesley Labour Club), Peter Yardley and Arturus Bogucianskas (Midland Darts Centre), Jean Forde (Devil’s Club) and Mark Wyatt (Custard House).

Just two points separate the top three teams in the Pip Club ‘Overall’ League table. Belgrave Club are top on 21 points with J.W.Belgrave second on 20 points, Dolphin are a further one point behind. With leaders Belgrave Club having a bye this week, the chasing duo made up some ground, J.W.Belgrave winning14-2 at home to Old Liberal Club and Dolphin getting a 12-4 result at Sports Bar ‘180’.

Mackadown Social, third in the South Birmingham League division one table are closing the gap between them and leaders Riley’s Kings. A 5-4 win over The Digby Hotel has taken them to 10 points from six games, level on points with second placed The Crown at Shard End, who have played two games more. Riley’s Kings are on 14 points and played one more than Mackadown.

Pavilions have lost pole position in division two, surprisingly going down 5-4 away to mid table Trident. Banbury Club have taken over the top spot level on 18 points with Pavilions, but with a superior average.

Round one of the Presidents Cup was on the fixture card for the Forest of Arden Winter League. Division one leaders Riley’s Flights had a massive 8-1 win over Harvester, who are second in the same division. Olton Crown (div 1) were also 8-1 winners against Riley’s Wings from division two.

Highwood ‘C’ (div 2) had a good 5-4 win over first division opposition Old Bill and Bull. Other teams to win through were, Chelmsley Town, Riley’s Red Arrows and Greville Arrows.

Sportsmans Rest consolidated their number one spot in the Aston League with a huge 8-1 win against Oscott Social. Red Lion, who are on the same 16 points as Sportsmans Rest won their game against Riley’s 6-3. Behind the leading duo come Riley’s and Old Oscott WMC, both on 12 points, four short of the leaders, Riley’s however do have a game in hand.

The Tamworth League were involved on their Charity Cup, which they played the first two rounds at the Dolphin Inn. League leaders Three Horse Shoes had byes into the semi finals as both of their opponent’s, Three Tuns and Wigginton were unable to field a team. Other making it to the semis were Sports Bar ‘180’, Old Liberal House and Globe Inn.

The evening raised £43 which will be added to the pot for the league’s charities, S.P.I.N. and the Stroke Association.

Rowley Golf Club recorded an important win in the Rowley Monday Night League when they beat Ivy Bush ‘Z’ 5-4, their first defeat in five. The win keeps the Golf Club top of the table on 10 points, with Bull Terrier and the Bell both two points adrift but having played one game fewer.

Congratulations to Springfield Social Club, whose 6-3 win at Ivy Bush ‘A’ was their first in four games.
