In their most recent fixture in division two of the Kaliber BDO Inter Counties Championships the West Midlands recorded a tremendous and what could prove to be vital victory over rivals Nottinghamshire. Playing at home at Gilberts Bar, Willenhall, West Midlands took on top of the promotional table Nottinghamshire, both men’s teams chalked up fine wins, the ’A’ 8-4 and the ’B’ 7-5. The ladies wee also in good form as the ‘A’ finished all square at 3-3 and the ’B’ won 5-1 to give an overall 26-13 win. Highlight of the fixture was the performance from Jamie Hughes who beat Mark Wilson 3-0 in 13, 16 and 15 darts for a magnificent 35.79 average. Other award winners were Jack Routledge (27.83), Leanne Jennings (’A’ 23.48) and Diane Tolley (’B’ 18.69).

West Midlands now move into second place on 110 points just one behind leaders Derbyshire.

A 7-2 win over Castle Vale Residents Association consolidates Olton RBL’s pole position in the premier division of the Sheldon and District Winter League. Second in the table Saltley Amateur Gardeners had an important 6-3 win at third placed Shard End RBL ’B’ and also have 20 points but their average is inferior to Olton’s and have played one game more.

The top two teams in division two, Pavilions and RAFA squared up to each other on the Pavilions board however, home advantage was not enough to avoid a 6-3 defeat and as a result the teams have swapped places in the table, RAFA are now top and Pavilions second. A different story in division two as Willclare Sports and Social and Glebe farm Community Association, the top two teams both lost. Willclare lost 6-3 to Golden Acres and Glebe went down by the same margin to Kingshurst Labour Club who have taken over the number two spot, Willclare stay top o average.

Winners from the second round of the Punchbowl are, Yardley Ex Flights, Sheldon Dukes, Shirley RBL, Pavilions, Farringdon Flights, RAFA and Brook Meadow. The preliminary round of the Sheldon Shield saw Mackadown Social and Millhouse progress to the next round.

Two maximums and a 3-0 result against Jay Murray has seen reigning Brook Meadow Individual Double Top League champion Trevor Frost open up a four points lead over his nearest rival newcomer Paul Sunner. Sunner opened up with a 3-0 success over Adam Gallett and followed that with a 2-1 win against Scott Austin, Sunner hitting a 180 in both games.

Other players to find the three treble twenties were John Burdett, Ross Macken, Scott Austin and Mathew Gallett (2).

In division one of the Harborne and District Winter League leaders Pheasant had a bye, Smethwick Labour Club took full advantage winning their home tie against Quinton Members Club 6-3 to draw level on 10 points with Pheasant but remain in second spot on average. Third placed Midland Red lost ground in the title race as they went down 5-4 at Avenue Social ’B’.

All top three teams in division two won, leaders Woodpecker beat Avenue Social ’A’ 6-3 to keep two points ahead of both Quinborne and New Inns who in turn beat Hillyfields 5-4 and Quinton Members Club Flights 7-2.

8-1 wins for both Midland Red and Sportsmans Rest in division one of the Four Oaks and District League. The Reds beat Hardy Spicer, while Sportsmans Rest accounted for Boot Flights who had problems with their finishing doubles.

In division two Cross Keys maintained their two points lead from Anvil Nomads with a 5-4 win at Old Oscott WMC, Nomads winning 8-1at Pint Pot. Two points behind Nomads is Cross Keys PPA who beat Aston Social 6-3.

Second in the Small Heath league Victoria 301 Club suffered a shock 5-4 defeat by local rivals Victoria Flights, who are next to bottom of the table. 301’s loss means reigning champions Mitre are now six points clear after handing out a crushing 8-1 defeat to Potcheen Still.
