The Brook Meadow Individual League completed their 2006 season with the play off of their singles and doubles competitions. League champion Ian McFarlane completed a magnificent season making it a treble celebration by adding the singles and doubles titles to his already won league title. Ian began his singles campaign with a neat 3-0 victory over Brian Cooper. He was then taken the full five legs distance in round one by reigning champion Simon Winters, but came out of the tussle with the 3-2 decision. In the quarter finals he reverted back to straight wins by defeating Mark Elkin 3-0. The semi final was a similar story, on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat this time was Ross Macken.

From the other side of the draw Carl Winters had emerged as the finalist after beating Jay Murray (3-2), Martin Cooper (3-2) and Terry Blakemore (3-1). The final was a cracker going the full five legs distance, Winters hitting a maximum, 3×140, 6×100 and recording a fourteen darts leg. McFarlane had scores of 4×140, 3×125, 121, 6×100 and winning legs in 15, 16 and 17 darts for a 3-2 success, leaving his opponent Carl Winters the 3-2 runner up for the second consecutive season.

In the doubles McFarlane teamed up with Mark Elkin. They beat Mark Birch and Brian Cooper 3-0 in the quarter finals and Ross Macken and Terry Blakemore 3-2 in the last four. The final opposition came in the form of Simon Winters and Barry French, but Elkin and McFarlane proved too strong and ran out 3-1 winners, taking the title for the third consecutive season and during that time have only dropped six legs.

The 2007 Brook Meadow Individual League season has got underway and the early pacesetter is Carl Winters. Carl has played three and won all of them. Playing against Jay Murray, Ian McFarlane and J.Burdett Carl has won all three 2-1. The big shock was the 2-1 win over reigning champion Ian McFarlane, who despite a 2-1 win against Colin Farrington and the 3-0 defeat of Jay Murray is currently lying in third place in the table.

Second in the league is Jon Miley, who has played two fixtures, beating both Brian Cooper and S.Lysaght 3-0.

Hitting a maximum in the opening games of the season were, Trevor Frost and Carl Winters. Fastest leg of the week went to Ian McFarlane, who recorded a thirteen darts leg in his 2-1 defeat by Carl Winters.

As the halfway point fast approaches in the Harborne and District Winter League, four teams, Midland Red, George, Smethwick Labour Club and Quinton Members Club all remain undefeated. The Red’s, who have played one more game than the George and Smethwick Labour Club are top of the table with 20 points, Quinton Members Club have only played seven games and have three in hand on the leaders.

At the other end of the table Quinton Members Club Flights are the only team in the league without a win so far.

I personally am very pleased that Harborne and District League match secretary, Steve Wenlock as had a change of heart. Steve, who does an absolutely fantastic job as match secretary providing not only the league with their monthly statistics but all the results, information and league tables that are produced in this column each week, decided he was going to resign the position basically because the information he required to keep both the league and this column up to date was not forthcoming. He was not getting the result cards as quickly as he needed. However, he is now going to give it another try and hopefully team secretaries will be a little more co-operative and get their results to him on time.

Good match secretaries are hard to come by and Steve is one of the best. The Harborne league should realise this and help him in any way they possibly can. Keep up the good work Steve and thanks for all your help.
