What a difference a couple of weeks make. That is what the Midland Red team must be thinking in division one of the Harborne and District 401 Summer League. Just two fixtures ago the Midland Red were riding high on the crest of a wave in pole position having won all of their matches at that point. Then last week they travelled away to Smethwick Labour Club and lost 5-4. In the very next game they travelled to the George and once again they finished on the wrong side of a 5-4 result, which has now seen them drop into third place in the table. George take over the number one spot with Smethwick Labour, who beat Old Mill 7-2 move up into second place. There were maximums for both R.Passey (Old Mill) and V.Gould (Smethwick).

No problems for the division two leaders Harborne Stores as they continued their unbeaten run with a 5-4 away win over Bartley Green Social Club. But second placed Raven kept the pressure on the leaders with a 7-2 win at Hllyfields. Congratulations go to the Pheasant who broke their duck for the season by winning 5-4 at the Stonehouse.

Many darts players will know Pensnett’s John Westwood, a man who for as many years as I can remember has played darts throughout not only the Midlands but the country. I worked with John’s wife Nita for around nine years and knew John very well. I am sad to report that after a sudden massive heart attack, John at the age of 59 has passed away. For many, many years John battled with eye problems and was actually registered blind. Nevertheless, this never stopped him from playing his beloved game of darts. He will be sadly missed throughout the darts world.

After completing four fixtures Jason Evans and Ian McFarlane are the early pacesetters in the Brook Meadow Individual League. Both players have won all their games and have amassed a total of 18 points, two more than Bill Cadby, who has also won his four matches. Reigning champion Robbie Earl was knocked off pole position following his somewhat shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Simon Winters. Earl has dropped to sixth position and is three points adrift of the leaders.

Fastest game of the week went to Martin Cooper, who in a 3-0 win over Jon Miley checked out in fourteen darts. Highest score of 180 also went to Martin Cooper plus Mark Birch, Jason Evans (2), Ross Macken and Carl Winters. Best finish went to Robbie Earl, a 135 game shot against league newcomer Warren Rudd.

The Tigers are the first team this season to claim a title in the G.U.L.P. Charity League. Taking on Bromford in the final of the Aggregate Cup, Tigers romped to a convincing victory. Losing semi finalists were Barmy Army, who lost to the champions and The Who’s. Top finish of the night went to Tigers Ross Macken, who checked on 142.

The Consolation Cup final was won by the Lions with All Sorts finishing as runners up.
