In their final fixture of the season, in the premier division of the UKDA National League, Lancashire suffered their one and only defeat of the ten games season, a 19-17 defeat away to Lincolnshire. The defeat however was irrelevant as Lancashire were still acclaimed champions with a total of 246 points which was twelve more than the runners-up Lincolnshire. Reigning champions Yorkshire ended the season with a bye and actually finished fifth in the division with 199 points, a huge forty-seven points off the top of the table.

Cornwall and Hertfordshire finished as the bottom two teams, Cornwall bottom with 155 points and Hertfordshire just above them on 162 points.

Cornwall provided the top Men’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ best averages, Matt Knowles taking the ‘A’ award for his 4-0 win over Dorset’s Jordan Sharpe and superb 33.40 average, while Knowles team-mate Robert Ruberry took the ‘B’ award for his 4-1 win against Nigel Lamb (Dorset) and 29.84 average. For the ladies, the ‘A’ award went to Lancashire’s Ally Smith, who beat Lincolnshire’s Liv Heaton 3-0 with a super 26.84 average. The ‘B’ award going to Glamorgan’s Lorraine Hyde, who had a 22.47 average in her 3-1 win against Hertfordshire’s Laura Camp.

West Midlands didn’t have the best of finishes to their season in the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division, as they returned from Cheshire on the wrong side of the 20-16 result, nevertheless despite this the result was enough for them to move up one place in the table and finish as champions as former leaders, Middlesex went down 24-12 at Kent to finish as runners-up with 224 points three fewer than the West Midlands.

Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire finished in the bottom two places and will play next season in the L-Style division one. Cambridgeshire had 168 points and Oxfordshire 172.

West Midlands played their fixture with Cheshire one week earlier than scheduled and it was West midlands Scott Baker who had the best men’s ‘A’ average of 34.55 as he accounted for Cheshire’s Ozzy Ayers with a straight 4-0 result. The top men’s ‘B’ average was 28.01 which, was achieved by Northamptonshire’s Lee Rose in his 4-1 win over Gwent’s Sam Phillips. Cheshire’s Lindsey Ashton topped the ladies ‘A’ averages, 24.40 in her 3-1 win against West Midlands Jacqueline Maiden while the ‘B’ award went to Hampshire’s Jo Rolls who averaged 21.47 in her 3-0 win over Oxfordshire’s Kim Ledbury.

The final games of the season in the L-Style Division One saw no change in the top two places with the top two teams, Leicestershire and Worcestershire both winning, Leicestershire 21-15 at Derbyshire and Worcestershire 20-16 at home to Merseyside. Leicestershire finished as champions with 239 points, runners-up Worcestershire amassed 224 points.

At the other end of the table Derbyshire and Berkshire filled the bottom two places, Derbyshire next to bottom with 159 points and Berkshire bottom with 140 points.

Leicestershire clinched two of the top averages, the men’s ‘A’ and the ladies ‘B’. Jason Lole average 30.04 in his 4-2 win over Derbyshire’s Darron Brown, while Janine Gough won her award for her 23.11 average in her 3-1 win against Emily Jones (Derbyshire). The men’s ‘B’ award went to Worcestershire’s Scott Rollings who defeated Merseyside’s Dave Harnick 4-1 and averaged 29.09. Chez Allcock (Black Country) took the ladies ‘A’ award as she won 3-1 against Staffordshire’s Danielle Pearce with a 22.59 average.

I would sincerely like to thank Sue Getty Williams for all of her help throughout the season, supplying me with all of the missing results. Thank-you Sue.

For Warwickshire County Darts Organisation it was somewhat of a disappointing season in the premier division of the UKDA National League as they finished in a mid-table position with 188 points, some fifty-eight short of champions Lancashire.

Warwickshire’s final game of the season was a home tie with Sussex, going into the fixture, Warwickshire were placed seventh with 166 points and their opponents eighth on 153 points. The weekend began well for the away side as their ladies ‘B’ won 4-2 with Donna Pinch and Kirsty Hinchliffe the only winners for the home team, Donna Pinch taking the match award for her 3-0 win over Tracey Collins and 18.33 average.

Lee Miller opened up for the men’s ‘B’ and won his game against Harvey Eves 4-3, but from one-up the ‘B’ team then found themselves trailing 3-1 as in turn Harry Jackson, Kevin Fishwick and Alex Gurr won against Keith Deeley (4-1), Karl Reynolds (4-3) and Jason Prince (4-2). Matty Washbrooke reduced the arrears with his 4-2 win over Matt Patterson and with a 4-0 man of the match win over Steve Collins by Jamie Hughes the game was levelled at the midway stage, Hughes taking the match award for his 28.23 average.

As the second session got underway, Sussex went ahead again, this time through Paul Robinson who beat Taylor McGuckian 4-0 and with a further 4-0 win from Paul Eves against Adam Hancock, the home team were trailing 5-3. Mark Strong kept hopes alive of a win when he beat Darren Chapman 4-2 but those hopes were erased in the tenth when Dean Leaver put the visitors 6-4 up with his 4-1 win over Zac Prince. At this point Warwickshire had their best run of the match winning the final two games thanks to Mark Martin and Ian Shaw who defeated their respective opponents Graham Harris and Rod Hawkins 4-1 and 4-3 to give a final score of 6-6.

Like the men’s ‘B’ the ladies ‘A’ won their opening game when Wendy Adams beat Lisa Withers 3-0. The lead didn’t last long as Donna Rainsley won 3-1 against Kirsty Hinchliffe and Ellie Dudeney beat Marian Conway 3-2. Courtney Hine levelled the score at 2-2 with her 3-2 win over Disney Dunbar before Caroline Pike not only assured her team of a draw when she won 3-1 against Jemma Murphy but at the same time earned herself the lady of the match award for her 23.25 average. A straight 3-0 win for Natalie Gilbert in the final game against Sarah Twell gave the ladies ‘A’ a 4-2 victory.

With the running score now standing at 12-12 the men’s ‘A’ required a win for an overall victory for the weekend. Gareth Braham chalked up the first of those necessary seven wins when he won 4-2 against Dean Harrison and although Timothy Peirce (Sussex) won 4-3 against William Naylor, Warwickshire then went 4-1 up as Sam Price beat Rob Metcalfe 4-2, Steve Hine won 4-1 against Paul Eves and Kevin Dowling accounted for Jim Withers with a 4-2 result. At the break the score was 4-2 in favour of the hosts as the half closed with a 4-2 win for Tavis Dudeney (Sussex) against Jack Wareing.

As the second half began, Sussex were first out of the blocks as Brad O’Connor won 4-1 against Mark Carter, but with a similar 4-1 win for Ryan Jackson over Joe Davis, Warwickshire’s two games buffer was restored, but not for long as Cavan Phillips won 4-3 against Noel Grant and Lewis Gurney beat Dave Hill 4-1 to put the score level at 5-5. It took a man of the match performance from Nigel Heydon to restore the home team’s lead, Heydon winning 4-2 against Dave McLaren with a superb average of 31.24, everything now rested on the final game between Wayne Mynard (Warwickshire) and Ronnie Sumner. The game went the full seven legs distance with the 4-3 result going to Wayne Mynard to see the men’s ‘A’ win 7-5 and the overall score for the weekend of 19-17 going to Warwickshire.

The West Midlands went into their final game of the season in the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division away to Cheshire, knowing they had everything to play for as they were second in the league with 211 points and only one point behind leaders Middlesex.

The ladies ‘B’ didn’t have the best of starts as they were quickly chasing a 3-0 deficit as Sarah Goodwin beat Jade Wellings 3-2, Andrea Davis won 3-0 against Kelly Aston and Chloe Davenport won 3-1 against Claire Hobbs. The next two games both went to the wire with West Midlands players Jacqueline Simmons and Kat McLean winning 3-2 against their respective opponents Kerry Mundy and Lyn Marsden, Kat McLean collecting the match award for her 19.44 average. Shellbie Guest rescued a share of the points for the Midlanders when in the final game she won 3-1 against Adele Probin, the result 3-3.

Callum Parkes gave the visitors the early lead in the men’s ‘B’ match when he defeated Jeff Fisher 4-3, however with a 4-1 win for George Hough over Mark Craddock and 4-2 wins for both Alex Daniels and Chris Hough in turn against Kian Rogers and Cameron Baird the home side were 3-1 up. Dean Fullwood momentarily reduced the arrears when he beat Jacob Russell 4-0 but with a further 4-2 win for Mal Barrow against Sean Craig, the score at the break was 4-2 to Cheshire.

By the eighth game the match was level at 4-4 as Olly Garratt opened the second half for West Midlands with a 4-2 win over Ben Hewitt and then man of the match Justin Evans beat Dave Hart 4-3 with a 24.42 average. Unfortunately that was to be the last winner for West Midlands as Karl Woodward, Calum McCaffrey and Ben Lundstrom chalked up 4-1 wins over their respective opponents Kieran O’Mahoney, Martin Price and Connor Lucas, and with a final 4-2 win for Billy Blackmore over Ian Stanton, Cheshire’s men’s ‘B’ had won 8-4.

The ladies ‘A’ match followed the exact same pattern as the ladies ‘B’, losing the first three games and then winning the last three. Kirstie Corbett, Lindsey Ashton and Jane Stubbs in turn had wins over Jacqueline Trott (3-2), Jacqueline Maiden (3-1) and Hannah Davies (3-0). Evonne Taylor began the fight back for the Midlands side when she won 3-1 against Julie Whitehouse, lady of the match Gemma Barrett had a 3-1 win and 21.75 average against Emma Pearce and with a similar 3-1 win for Eloise Milburn over T.J.Mellor, the final score once again was 3-3.

Anthony Conroy gave Cheshire men’s ‘A’ an opening lead when he won 4-1 against Gavin Baker before West Midlands rattled off three consecutive wins thanks to Ryan O’Connor, Shaun Carroll and Jack Aldridge, who accounted for their respective opponents Matthew Shaw, Perry Davenport and Darren Downey with 4-2, 4-0 and 4-1 results. Although 3-1 up the score at the halfway stage was 3-3 as the hosts replied with 4-2 wins from Keith Croxford and Sean Wilkinson who won in turn against Daniel Hands and Richard Platt.

As in the first half the hosts won the opening game of the second half, Joe Rowland beating Jay Woodhouse 4-2. West Midlands man of the match was on at number eight, Scott Baker chalking up a super 34.55 average in his straight 4-0 win over Ozzy Ayers, From a score of 4-4 the home side then were assured at the worst of a draw as Jim Moston won 4-1 against Jon Platt and Allie Clark handed Will Beaden a 4-0 defeat. Hopes of a draw were kept alive when Adam Teasdale won the penultimate encounter against Shaun Walshe 4-3 and were realised when Dan Nicholls won the final game of the weekend against Joe Kelly 4-1, the result, all-square at 6-6.

The overall result for the fixture was a 20-16 win for Cheshire, but with Middlesex also surprisingly losing 24-12 at Kent, it was congratulations to West Midlands who not only achieved promotion but also won the divisional title with 227 points, three more than Middlesex who finished as runners-up.
