West Midlands played a rearranged game four fixture in the UKDA National League’s Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division, an away game against Cambridgeshire. Going into the fixture West Midlands were lying fourth in the league table with 187 points and their hosts bottom of the table with 153 points.
Saturday didn’t get off to a very good start as the ladies ‘B’ slumped to a 5-1 defeat with Jade Wellings their sole winner, Jade beating Lacie Brookin 3-1 with a lady of the match average of 19.74. The men’s ‘B’ chalked up a 7-5 win with their top player Connor Lucas who in his 4-3 win over Kelly Corcoran he averaged 27.28.
Trailing 10-8 going into Sunday’s ‘A’ matches, the ladies levelled the running score with a 4-2 win and taking the match award for her 3-0 success over Karen Stanhope was Gemma Barrett who averaged 20.59. The men’s ‘A’ recorded an overall match winning result, beating their counterparts 9-3 to give an overall victory of 21-15. With a superb average of 32.32, Ryan O’Connor was the man of the match accounting for his opponent Matthias Dietrich with a straight 4-0 result.
The 21-15 win has seen West Midlands move up to second place in the table with 126 points, thirty-one fewer than leaders and promoted Middlesex but more importantly sixteen to the good on their nearest rivals Hampshire. With just one more fixture to play, promotion back to the premier division now looks to be on the cards.
