Fixture number five in the UKDA National League Cosmo Darts Premier Division produced a battle of the ‘Roses’ when leaders Yorkshire played hosts to second placed Lancashire, the former having a twelve points lead on their visitors. Saturday’s games saw the away side take an 11-7 lead into Sunday’s ‘A’ matches despite the ladies ‘B’ losing 4-2 as the men’s ‘B’ won 9-3. The ‘A’’ games were a complete reversal of the ‘B’ results as Lancashire won the ladies game 4-2 and Yorkshire finished on the right side of the 8-4 result for the men’s match. The overall result was 19-17 to Lancashire which sees Yorkshire hold-on to pole position with 112 points, Lancashire reducing the deficit to seven points with 105 points.

A 22-14 win at Hertfordshire keeps Cornwall in third place, reducing the gap on Lancashire to just two points and doubling their lead on fourth placed Lincolnshire from two to four points.

Topping the averages in the men’s ‘A’ games was Lancashire’s David Evans who won 4-1 with a 32.31 average against Yorkshire’s Peter Jacques, Keith Flint (Yorkshire) narrowly missing out with his 31.31 average and straight 4-0 win over Lee Wilson (Lancashire). Ally Smith (Lancashire) had the topped the ladies ‘A’ charts, beating Yorkshire’s Sally Whiting 3-0 with a 26.84 average. Hampshire’s Jane Monaghan was not far behind Ally Smith as she chalked up a 26.37 average in her 3-0 win over Dorset’s Bevvy Hoey.

David Moule (Hampshire_ had the best men’s ‘B’ average, 31.31 in a 4-0 win over George Grant (Dorset) while Lincolnshire’s Mandy Smith won 3-0 and averaged 23.12 in her game with Glamorgan’s Donna Buckley to top the ladies ‘B’ averages.

A 24-12 home win over Cheshire has seen Suffolk extend their lead at the top of the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division from six to sixteen points. Cambridgeshire lost their home tie with Northamptonshire 19-17 and as a result also lose their number two spot and drop to third place but on the same 100 points as Humberside whose 20-16 home win over Gwent has seen them move up from third to second in the division. Fourth placed Sussex, are only two points behind Humberside and Cambridgeshire and eighteen short of Suffolk after they won 23-13 at home against Derbyshire and despite trailing the three teams above them they do have a game in hand on them all.

Gwent’s Nick Kenny’s 4-2 win over Humberside’s Mike Atkinson saw him top the men’s ‘A’ averages while a 23-13 home win over Staffordshire produced the other three top averages for Oxfordshire. In the ladies ‘A’ match Deta Hedman averaged 25.05 in her straight 3-0 win over Staffordshire’s Sarah Cope and it was Hedman’s team-mate Nicola Curzon who topped the ‘B’ averages winning 3-1 against Rhiannon Scales (Staffordshire) with a 19.89 average. Again it was Oxfordshire claiming the men’s ‘B’ award when Pete Hall beat Staffordshire’s Stuart Livesley 4-0 and averaged 32.85, Sussex player Dave McLaren not far behind Hall with his 32.32 average in a 4-0 win over Derbyshire’s Liam Ryde.

Despite having a bye, Middlesex remain top of the L-Style Division One table and although second placed Clwyd lost 20-16 away to Merseyside they hold on to second place and have joined Middlesex on 100 points but having played one game more than the leaders. The win for Merseyside has seen them move up into third place with 93 points, one more than the team previously at number three, Somerset who went down 22-14 at Berkshire to leave them just one point behind Merseyside who have a game in hand on Clwyd and Somerset.

Although Clwyd lost 20-16 at Merseyside they actually had both of the ‘A’ team top averages as David Davies beat Mike Addison (Merseyside) 4-0 with a super 33.40 average and Leanne Topper took the ladies ‘A’ award for her 22.99 average in her 3-1 win over Adele Mulligan (Merseyside). Kate Hulme (Somerset) just missed out on the averages as she chalked up a 22.25 average in her 3-2 win over Berkshire’s Debbie Shadwell.

The men’s top ‘B’ team average of 30.36 went to West Midlands Ryan Locker who won 4-0 against Devon’s Jake Wreford. Cleveland Claire Stamper and Merseyside’s Claire New shared the top average of 18.56 for the ladies ‘B’ games, Claire Stamper winning 3-0 against Buckinghamshire’s Chardonnay Bowen while Claire New accounted for Clwyd’s Neeley Street with a 3-0 result.

Black Country began their fourth fixture away to Leicestershire in the UKDA National League L-Style Division One placed fourth on seventy-three points while their hosts were two places off the foot of the table with fifty-one points, both teams having only played three fixtures compared to many of the teams above them having played four.

The ladies ‘B’ match began well for Leicestershire as their Caroline Newberry and Trish Roberts in turn both won 3-0 against Lacey Hughes and Kirsty Shaughnessy. Stella Sims reduced the arrears when she beat Kelly Welsh 3-1 and with a further 3-1 win for Black Country’s lady of the match Paige Robbins over Angela Sheffield with a 15.06 average, the score was levelled at 2-2. Ella Coburn restored the home team’s lead with her 3-1 win over Sarah-Jane Parker but the game finished all-square at 3-3 when last-on Amy-Leigh Tolley (Black Country) beat Melanie Bell 3-2.

Like the ladies ‘B’ Leicestershire’s men’s ‘B’ also had a fine start as they opened up a 3-0 lead with wins from Harry Earp, Scott Brookes and Ian Turner who accounted for their respective counterparts Andy Garratt (4-2), Jamie Rollinson (4-2) and Kieron Bridgwater (4-0). Gavin Smith was the visitor’s first winner, beating Leon Baumber 4-1, only to see the home team have their three games buffer restored when Wayne Beaumont won 4-1 against Rich Bowen. By the midway point the score was 4-2 in the home team’s favour after Jake Shipley (Black Country) closed the half with a 4-3 win over Alex Bruce.

As the second half got underway it was Black Country who were first out of the blocks winning four in-a-row, all begun by Wayne Hobday who beat Michael Hibbert 4-1. Al Smith had a similar 4-1 win against Tyler Beasley and with a further 4-2 success for Sam Bissell over Billy Jackson Black Country had opened up an 5-4 lead. Man of the match Rob Smith put the win beyond Leicestershire’s reach when he won 4-1 against Andy Shillcock with a 24.33 average. Anthony Sutton kept hopes of a draw alive got he hosts when he won the penultimate game against Ian Townsend 4-2 but the 7-5 result went to Black Country as anchor-man Mark Jones won 4-3 against Leigh Peet.

The home side’s ladies ‘A’ team stormed into an unbeatable 3-0 position with wins from Rebecca Collins, Shannon Reeve and Mem Martin-Jones who beat respective opponents Chez Allcock (3-2), Doreen Hunt (3-1) and Maxine Prosser (3-1). The following two games both went to the wire with Heather Wright (Black Country) winning the first, 3-2 against Paula Swain and Lauren Hall not only beating Abbey Hunt by the same margin but at the same time chalking up the all-important winning fourth game for Leicestershire. The last encounter produced Black Country’s second winner in the form of Tammy Chance who not only won 3-0 against Liz Brunt but at the same time won the match award for her 22.10 average. The final score 4-2 to Leicestershire.

It was not a good first half of the men’s ‘A’ game for Black Country as they found themselves trailing 5-1 at the halfway stage. David Barker, Neil Pullen and Paul Harbourne opened up a 3-0 lead for Leicestershire when they defeated Jamie Barrowman (4-2), Dan Homer (4-3) and Liam Kelly (4-1). Cayden Smith momentarily stopped the rot with his 4-1 win against Martin Giddings only to see the last two games of the half go to the hosts when Ben Quenby beat Paul Wells 4-1 and Darren Tyler won 4-0 against Steve Jones.

After a half to forget it then turned out to be a similar outcome in the second half with Black Country, once again getting just the one winner. Ricky Sudale opened up with a win for the home side when he won 4-0 against Dave Edwards and although the second game of the half produced Black Country’s man of the match in the shape of Trev Brennan who won 4-1 against Janek Hill with a 27.48 average the next four games all went to Leicestershire. Adam Marziano had a 4-3 win over Alex Howells, Andrew Hibbert won 4-1 against Michael Powell and the last two games both resulted in 4-0 wins for Leicestershire’s Jason Lole and Scott Hope who in turn beat George Willetts and Aaron Cole to give Leicester’s men’s ‘A’ a huge 10-2 win and take the overall score for the weekend to 22-14 in favour of the home side.

As a result of their defeat Black Country dropped two places in the table to sixth on eighty-seven points and Leicestershire, despite the win remain ninth, two places off the foot of the table with seventy-six points, both teams have only played four fixtures and could well move up the table when they play their game in hand.

West Midlands’ fixture in the UKDA National League L-Style Division One was a home fixture against bottom of the division Devon who were nine points adrift of their hosts who were four places above them with fifty-nine points, both teams only having played three games.

Devon had the brighter start to the ladies ‘B’ game as their Merryl Dennis beat Tara Simmons-Fullwood 3-1 and Alison Gabriel-Wotton won 3-2 against Shellbie Simmons. Sarah Maybury chalked-up West Midlands’ first stripe on the board when she accounted for Rebeca Bowen with a 3-2 result. The away side moved to within an ace of victory in the fourth when Katie Miller won 3-1 against Jacqueline Simmons but a share of the spoils were salvaged when the hosts last two players Kelly Doleman and Hannah Davies both won 3-1. Kelly Doleman beat Lisa White while Hannah Davies defeated Sal McDermott and in the process earned herself the match award for her 14.68 average. The final score 3-3.

The first four games of the men’s ‘B’ match all went with the first throw advantage, Kieran Joy giving Devon the early lead when he won 4-0 against Luke Griffiths. The visitor’s lead didn’t last long as a 4-3 win from Kieran O’Mahoney over Flynn Jones took the score to one each. Devon forged ahead again in the third when Danny Belsten beat Alex Simmons 4-2, only to see parity restored for a second time when Neil Pointon won 4-2 against Shane Maddicks . The sequence was broken in the fifth when Dean Simmons-Fullwood (West Midlands) won 4-1 against Luke Roberts but with a close 4-3 win for Luke Grantham over Anthony Whitehouse in the closing game of the first half, the score was level at 3-3.

The visitor’s went ahead again as the second session got underway, Brandon Stow accounting for Adam Teasdale with a 4-1 scoreline. Locker beat Jake Wreford 4-0 with a super 30.36 average while Khayat won by the same 4-0 margin against Shane House. The score was levelled yet again in the tenth, Mark Turner (Devon) beating Callum Parkes 4-3. Glen McGrandle was the man to assure the hosts of a share of the points when he handed out a 4-0 whitewash to his opponent Daniel Brazier but a win was confirmed in the final game when Ian Stanton beat Mike Beard to give West Midlands a 7-5 victory.

The ladies ‘A’ game swayed one way and then the other before finishing all-square, Gemma Barrett opened up for the home team, winning 3-0 against Karen Matthews. Nicole Goyne (Devon) was taken to a deciding leg before beating Jodie Rowlands 3-2 to level the game and with a further 3-0 win from Goyne’s team-mate Kelly Gabriel over Claire Hobbs the away side were 2-1 up. It took a lady of the match performance from Jacqueline Maiden to level the score for a second time as she won 3-1 against Tracy Ware with a 20.20 average. In the penultimate encounter Evonne Taylor (West Midlands) won 3-2 against Lisa Hughes before the final score was taken to 3-3 after Hayley Brant (Devon) won the last game against Jacqueline Trott 3-1.

First on for the West Midlands in the men’s ‘A’ match was Martin Price who put the home side one up when he defeated Danny Belsten 4-1. The hosts lead didn’t last long as Simon Washington won 4-2 against Gavin Baker and Ben Chamberlain beat Shane Price 4-3 to give Devon a 2-1 advantage. Rob Thompson’s 4-1 success over Mike Pearce followed by a 4-2 win for Richard Platt against Paul Palmer gave the Midlander’s a 3-2 lead and by the midway point that lead was extended to 4-2 after Darren Williams won 4-1 against Mark Vellacott.

The second half was mainly West Midlands as Shaun Carroll got the session underway with a 4-2 win over Jon Bush. A draw was guaranteed as early as the eighth game as the hosts man of the match and long serving player Ian Jones made it 6-2 with his 4-1 win and 29.39 average against Andy Hitchman. The win was confirmed in the very next game as Scott Baker beat Steve Colbourne 4-2 and with a 4-1 result for Mark Craddock over Shaun Hurrell, West Midlands were 8-2 up with two to play. Jack Walker made the score a little more respectable for the visitors when he won 4-2 against Karl Hughes but a final 4-0 win for Will Beaden over Daniel Case gave the West Midlands men’s ‘A’ a comfortable 9-3 victory.

The overall 22-14 win for the West Midlands saw them consolidate their seventh position on eighty-four points and they still have a game in hand on three of the six teams above them.
