With only three of the five divisions playing game number five in the UKDA National League the premier division produced an intriguing tie between the two top teams, Lancashire and Yorkshire. Going into the fixture Lancashire were in pole position on ninety-six points and Yorkshire second with ninety points.

The weekend got off to a great start for the away side Yorkshire as their ladies ‘B’ chalked up a 5-1 victory with Lily Blanthorn their lady of the match beating Jenny Nuttall 3-1 with a 21.86 average. At the end of the day the score was 10-8 in Lancashire’s favour as their men’s ‘B’ won 9-3, taking the match award was Mike Shaw for his 4-1 win over Tony Calvert and 25.49 average.

After a 5-1 defeat for Lancashire’s ladies on Saturday, Sunday’s ‘A’ team, reversed the result and won 5-1. Topping the averages with 21.15 was Dawn Shaw who got the better of the 3-1 result over Marie Fitton. With the score now at 15-9 to the hosts, the men’s ‘A’ added their 8-4 win to give a final victory of 23-13 to Lancashire to consolidate their number one position. Taking the men’s ‘A’ team man of the match award was Ant Hitchmough who defeated James Robins 4-1 and averaged 30.68.

The win has seen Lancashire open up a fifteen points lead over Suffolk who have taken over the second place from Yorkshire who drop to third with 103 points, some nineteen off the top. Suffolk moved up from third place following their 21-15 win at Dorset.

Essex man Ryan Harrington recorded the top men’s ‘A’ average of 31.31 in 4-0 win over Sussex player Tavis Dudeney. Rhian O’Sullivan topped the ladies ‘A’ average with a super 27.33 average in her 3-0 win over Lincolnshire’s Laura Tye. Suffolk’s Paul Spiers had a 4-3 win over Dorset’s Jayden Walker and took the men’s ‘B’ award for his 30.91 average while the ladies ‘B’ went to Lily Blanthorn (Yorkshire) who had a 3-1 win over Lancashire’s Jenny Nuttall.

A 20-16 home win over Oxfordshire has seen Middlesex extend their lead at the top of the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division from seven to eleven points. It was not such good news for Kent however as they had a bye and as a result lost their second place and fell to fifth, they are now some thirty points short of leaders Middlesex with a game in hand. Replacing Kent in second place is Hampshire, their 24-12 win at Cheshire leaving them eleven points off the top. West Midlands move up one place to third following their 22-14 home win over London and although twenty points behind Middlesex have a game in hand. A 22-14 home win for Northamptonshire over Cambridgeshire has seen them move up two places in the table to fifth

Gwent scooped up both of the men’s top averages as Nick Kenny took the ‘A’ award for his 31-18 average in his 4-2 win over Humberside’s Tom Buckle while Jesse Heal took the ‘B’ award for his straight 4-0 win and 30.83 average against Christian Stevenson (Humberside). Oxfordshire’s Deta Hedman OBE was the top ladies ‘A’ player, recording a 22.10 average in a 3-1 success over Wendy Reinstadtler (Middlesex). Topping the ladies ‘B’ charts was Middlesex player Tina Neylon who beat Oxfordshire’s Denise Pape 3-1 with a 22.46 average.

A 22-14 home win over Merseyside was enough for Clwyd to hold on to the top spot in the L-Style Division one, but still with only a two points lead on second placed Somerset who also won their home game with Berkshire 22-14. After going down 20-16 at home to Leicestershire, Black Country have slipped from third to fifth place with Worcestershire taking over in the number three position following their 20-16 win at Salopian. Leicestershire’s win over Black Country takes them from fifth to fourth with a game in hand on all three teams above them and they are only twenty-six points short of Clwyd.

Kieron Bridgwater was in top form for the Black Country as he beat Leicestershire’s Scott Hope 4-0 and in the process chalked up a tremendous average of 33.40. The men’s ‘B’ award went to Devon’s Luke Roberts who beat Derbyshire’s Mick Smith 4-2 and averaged 29.81. Salopian’s Terry Nash narrowly missing out with his 29.73 average. Somerset’s Karen Littler finished top of the ladies ‘A’ averages, her 25.97 average came in a 3-1 win over Berkshire’s Hayley Watts. Paula Swain (Leicestershire) had a 3-0 win over Black Country’s Leanne Wilson to take the ladies ‘B’ award for her 21.47 average.

West Midllands fourth encounter in the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division was a home tie against London, who were playing their fifth fixture. The divisional table saw West Midlands fourth with seventy-one points and their visitors eighth with fifty-six points.

The opening four games of the ladies ‘B’ match all went against the first throw advantage, Kelly Aston giving the home side the early lead when she won 3-2 against Carly Townsend, Holly Glet levelled the game when she beat Shellbie Guest 3-1 only to see the hosts take the lead for a second time in the third when Hannah Davies not only got the better of Lynne Biondid with a 3-1 result but also secure the lady of the match award for her 18.19 average. The lead was cancelled out for a second time in the fourth when London’s Kelly Livett won 3-2 against Jacqueline Simmons. The sequence was broken in the penultimate game, Su Holt (London) winning 3-1 against Jade Wellings but a 3-3 draw was secured in the final game when Tara Fullwood won a five legs affair with Emma Little.

The men’s ‘B’ could not have wished for a better start as their man of the match Dean Simmons-Fullwood won the opener 4-3 against John Hetterley and averaged 26.70. West Midlands lead was doubled in the second game when Kieran O’Mahoney handed out a straight 4-0 defeat to Dave Payne. From 2-0 up the home side then stormed into a 5-0 lead with Rob Thompson winning 4-2 against Gene Hill, Cameron Baird defeating Ray Johnson 4-1 and Martin Price had a 4-2 win over Dave Cook. The final game of the half saw the away team chalk up their first win, Harry Kelly having a 4-2 result over Jordan Craig.

London reduced the deficit even further as the second half got underway by winning the first three games, John Walters won 4-2 against Luke Griffiths, Tyler Gabriel beat Ian Stanton 4-1 and Charlie Little took the overall score to 5-4 with his 4-0 win over Paul Price. Connor Lucas stopped the rot for the Midlanders, despite being taken to a deciding leg by Clive Barden, Lucas getting the 4-3 result. A 4-1 win for Dean Buckland over Sean Craig took the overall score to 6-5 with the outcome of the match all down to the final game of the day. West Midlands were able to breathe a sigh of relief as their Justin Evans assured them of a 7-5 win when he won in straight legs, 4-0 against Dan Collis.

Although she didn’t have the first throw advantage Eloise Milburn put the hosts one up when she won 3-2 against Debs Watling. However the lead didn’t last long as Tammy Mackenzie beat Jacqueline Maiden 3-2 and Nikki Patten won 3-1 against Gemma Barrett to put London 2-1 up. Evonne Taylor levelled the game with her 3-1 result over Kath Meneer only to see the away side forge ahead once again in the penultimate game when Mandy Solomons won 3-1 against Katherine Jenkins. Despite the pressure now being on West Midlands anchor player Kat McLean, she held her nerve and went on to win 3-2 against Jo Deamer and at the same time earn herself the match award for her 19.90 average. Like the ladies ‘B’ the ‘A’ finished all-square at 3-3.

Going into the men’s ‘A’ match, West Midlands were leading 13-11 but it was London who got the first stripe on the board as Matt Wood got a 4-2 result against Gavin Baker. The Midlanders long-serving Ian Jones once again came to the rescue winning 4-3 against Alan Slater before the visitors took the lead for a second time when Jamie Tilley won 3-2 against Will Beaden. Although trailing 2-1, by the break the hosts had opened up a 4-2 lead after Scott Baker beat Lewis McGurn 4-3, Richard Platt won 4-2 against Freddie Box and Adam Teasdale closed the half with his 4-3 win over Tommy Sanwell.

Wayne Clarke grabbed London’s third win, a 4-1 result over Mark Craddock but from there on in it was plain sailing for West Midlands as Darren Williams won 4-1 against Harry Kelly, Daniel Hands beat Conan Whitehead 4-3 and Jon Platt put up the all-important winning seventh game, handing Dean Buckland a straight 4-0 defeat. With West Midlands now leading 7-3 Neil Pointon added his 4-2 result over Craig Watkins and rounding off a 9-3 victory was Jay Woodhouse who not only beat Graham Rackstraw 4-3 but also collected the match award for his 26.68 average

The win sees West Midlands move up one place in the table to third with fifty-seven points and although twenty and nine points behind respective teams leaders Middlesex and second placed Hampshire they do have a game in hand on both.

Game number five for the Black Country in the UKDA National League’s L-Style Division One was a home tie against Leicestershire, the home team beginning the weekend in third place with seventy-nine points and their opponents placed fifth with seventy-two points but from one game fewer than their hosts.

It turned out to be a weekend to forget for the Black Country ladies as both teams finished on the wrong side of a 4-2 result. Scarlett O’Sullivan gave the home side the early lead when she opened up with a straight 3-0 win over Nicky Cropper and in the process earned herself the match award for her 14.88 average, but from one down the visitors then went into a 3-1 lead as Caroline Newberry and Melanie Bell in turn won 3-0 against Grace Angell and Kirsty Shaughnessy and Janine Gough won 3-1 beating Paige Robbins. Sarah Tromans kept Black Country in the game with her 3-1 win over Angela Lenton only to see Paula Swain chalk up a 3-0 win over Leanne Wilson to give the 4-2 result to Leicestershire.

The ladies ‘A’ quickly went 2-0 down as Ella Coburn won 3-2 against Abbey Hunt and Shannon Reeve beat Sarah-Jane Parker 3-0. Nevertheless the home team fought back to level the score at 2-2 thanks to a lady of the match performance from Heather Wright who won 3-2 against Liz Brunt and averaged 16.74, and Doreen Hunt who beat Kelly Welsh 3-0. Kirsty McIlvenny put a halt to the hosts winning run when she handed out a 3-0 defeat to Stella Sims and with a 3-2 win for Lauren Hall in the final game against Chez Allcock, once again Leicestershire ladies had won 4-2.

As both ladies teams finished 4-2 down both men’s teams ended all-square at 6-6.

The men’s ‘B’ had a good start as Neil Steventon and Wayne Hobday put them 2-0 up with respective wins over Nigel Ward (4-2) and Tom Mills (4-3). However the lead didn’t last long as Adam Marziano won 4-1 against Matthew Lloyd and Janek Hill beat Matt Coleman 4-1. The visitors then took the lead when Ash Clarke won 4-0 against Al Smith and at the midway point were 4-2 up after Ryan Carter added his 4-2 success over Sam Bissell.

The second session began as did the first with Black Country winning the opening two games, Mark Rollinson winning 4-2 against Ian Turner and Andy Garratt not only beating Derek Allsopp 4-3 but winning the man of the match award for his 27.16 average. With the score level at 4-4, Leicestershire forged ahead with a 4-2 win from Grant Brown over Mark Jones, only to see the score levelled once again as Rich Bowen won 4-1 against Andy Shillcock. Mark Faulkner assured the away side of a share of the points when he beat Rhys Butler 4-0, and a share of the points is what they got as Ian Townsend won 4-2 against Neil Pullen to take the result to 6-6.

The men’s ‘A’ match was similar to the ‘B’ as the first half ended with Leicestershire leading 4-2. The away team won the first two games thanks to their Jason Lole and Ben Quenby who had wins in turn over Dave Edwards (4-0) and Connor Whitehouse (4-1). Trev Brennan was the host’s first winner beating Ricky Sudale 4-1 but the two games buffer was restored for the visitors when David Barker won 4-2 against Paul Wells. Tom Bissell added Black Country’s second stripe on the board when he beat Ryan Hawkes 4-1 but a 4-2 win for Sam Whittaker over Jamie Rollinson gave the away side the 4-2 lead

Kieron Bridgwater was in superb form for Black Country as he kicked off the second half with a straight 4-0 win over Scott Hope and recorded a tremendous 33.40 average. A further win for Steve Jones over Paul Ablett levelled the game at 4-4 and with a 4-2 win from Michael Powell against Mark Thompson Black Country were leading for the first time in the game. However from 5-4 up they then trailed 6-5 as Andrew Hibbert won 4-0 against Dan Homer and Martin Giddings beat Grainger Jordan 4-3 to leave the result hinging once again on the last game of the match. The final game of the weekend went to the wire but it turned out to be a 4-3 win for George Willetts over Jaikob Selby-Rivas to salvage a draw the Black Country men’s ‘A’.

The overall result for the weekend was a 20-16 win for Leicestershire, this being the Black Country second successive defeat. The defeat sees Black Country drop two places to fifth on ninety-five points while Leicestershire move up one place to fifth with the same ninety-five points but still with a game in  hand.

Oscar Saxton kept hopes alive for Salopian winning 4-2 against Konnoll Webb but the visitors went 3-2 up when Dave Redding beat Dave Bayton 4-2. Rounding off the half was Kacey Jones who in his 4-3 win over Peter Hughes recorded a nine darts leg, the first in Salopian’s history, and took the man of the match award for his 29.34 average. The score at the midway point, level at 3-3.
