As the new season for the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League got underway reigning champions Lancashire had an away game against Dorset and won 21-15 while last season’s runners-up Yorkshire began their campaign with a home tie against newly promoted Hertfordshire and won handsomely 25-14 to put them top of the table with twenty-five points and a slender lead of one over both Glamorgan and Lancashire, Glamorgan, like Lancashire winning 21-15 playing at home against Essex. Hampshire and Cornwall are placed fourth and fifth in the division both of them chalking up 20-16 wins against respective opponents London, who are another team that were promoted last season from the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division and Warwickshire who ended the 2023-2024 season placed third.

Top averages for then season’s opener went to, for the men’s ‘A’, Dan Perry (Dorset) who had a 33.74 average while the ladies ‘A’ was shared as both Audrey Underwood (Lancashire) and Hannah Meek (Warwickshire) both recorded 25.47 averages. Cornwall’s Rob Jane was the top men’s ‘B’ player with a 31.81 average while Laura Turner (Hampshire) had a super 27 33 average to take the ladies ‘B’ award.

Suffolk and Sussex kicked off their season in the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Division with 23-13 wins, newly promoted Suffolk winning at home against Staffordshire who are fresh from the Premier Division and Susses won away to Cambridgeshire to put the two teams top of the division with twenty-six points each. In the only other game played in the division Kent won at home against Derbyshire by 21-15 to put them third in the table and just two points behind the top two teams.

Kent provided both the men’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ match award winners with their Joshua Wise taking the ‘A’ for his 33.82 average and Hayden Robbie the ‘B’ with a 28.23 average. Similar to the men again one team provided the ladies award winners as Derbyshire’s Jo Oldershaw and Rachel Ayers took the ‘A’ for their 21.17 average and Rach Bird the ‘B’ with her 20.04 average.

A 23-13 win at Berkshire has seen Merseyside set the early pace in the L-Style Division One as they top the table with twenty-six points, they have a three point’s advantage over Cleveland who were relegated from the Championship last season after they won their home tie with Leicestershire 20-16. A close 19-17 hone success over Somerset gives Devon third place with twenty-two points.

Top performances for division one came from Paul Milford (Devon) who scooped the men’s ‘A’ award with his 30.83 average and for the women’s ‘A’ it was Viv Cullimore (Merseyside) who averaged 21.17. Somerset provided both the men’s and women’s ‘B’ award winners, Ryan Palmer taking the men’s for his 27.85 average and Kay Bissett the women’s for her 19.64 average.

There were mixed fortunes for the two teams relegated from division to division two as Tyne and Wear won 22-14 at home against Wiltshire to top the table with twenty-five points and Gwynedd went down 19-17 at home to Salopian to be placed sixth with seventeen points. County Durham are second in the division on twenty-four points, one short of Tyne and Wear after they won 21-15 at home against Nottinghamshire. Both of the newly promoted teams Northumberland and Cumbria lost 20-16, Northumberland losing at home against Surrey while Cumbria, who also had a home game lost to Worcestershire.

Both of the ‘A’ awards went to Salopian players, Mark Crutchley topping the men’s averages with 31.06 and Kate Titley the women’s with her 23.48 average. A 29-43 average gave Lee Johnstone (County Durham) the men’s ‘B’ award while Chloe Luscott (Worcestershire) was the top ‘B’ lady with her 18.33 average.

Biggest win on opening day went to division three’s Wirral who had a very convincing 27-9 home win over Pembrokeshire to put them in pole position with thirty points and give them a lead of three over both second placed Norfolk, who were relegated form division two last season and third in the division Breconshire. Norfolk won 24-12 at home against West of England while Breconshire won by the same margin at Montgomery and Radnor.

Despite their defeat West of England supplied the third division’s men’s ‘A’ award winner in the shape of Jon Worsley who had a super 33.13 average. The women’s ‘A’ award went to Kim Holden (Wirral) who averaged 20.29. Karl Lewis (Montgomery and Radnor) was the top men’s ‘B’ player with a 29.04 average while 18.13 was the top women’s ‘B’ average which was recorded by Elise Broomfield (Norfolk).

Warwickshire began their 2023-2024 campaign in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League with an away fixture against Cornwall and lost 20-16, the new 2024-2025 season opener was a home tie for Warwickshire, once again against Cornwall and once again the result was 20-16.

Denise Keyte won the opening game of the season for the ladies ‘B’ with a 3-1 win over Sarah Gill only to see Jacqui Champion (Cornwall) cancel out her win when she won 3-1 against Kat Spanswick. Nina Bolt with a lady of the match performance beat Emma Dow 3-1 with a 17.94 average to restore Warwickshire’s lead but yet again it was cancelled out as Debbie Crocker beat Chloe McKivett-Saunders 3-2. For the first time in the game the visitors went ahead in the fifth when Courtney Hancock won 3-0 against Caroline Pike and with a further 3-0 win for Sarah Brown over Donna Pinch Cornwall ladies ‘B’ had won 4-2.

As with the ladies ‘B’, Warwickshire won the first of the men’s ‘B’ games when Mark Faulkner won 4-3 against Tex Thomas and once again as per the ladies, the lead was short lived as Kev Dunstan beat Jnr Joyce 4-3. Cornwall went 2-1 up in the third when Kevin Bray won 4-3 against Adam Hancock after Hancock had gone 3-1 up. Parity was restored in the fourth, Karl Reynolds making it two each when he accounted for Joseph Yendle with a 4-2 result. By the midway point the away side were 4-2 up after their man of the match Rob Jane (31.81) won 4-0 against William Naylor and Paul Ellis beat Martin Tonks 4-3 after Tonks had won the opening three legs.

Cornwall extended their lead to 5-2 as the second half got underway, Matthew Hawke winning 4-2 against Dave Hill, and with a 4-0 win for their Andrew Cook over Noah Rose a draw was guaranteed for the away side. Leigh Dells (Warwickshire) took the lead three times against Josh Symons but with wins in the last two legs Symons sealed not only a 4-3 win for himself but also put the result beyond the home team’s reach as Cornwall were now leading 7-2. Samuel Price came from 2-0 down against Neil Meneer to lead 3-2 but it was Meneer who got the 4-3 result to increase Cornwall’s advantage, then with a further 4-1 success for Aaron Rowe over Carl Green their lead was stretched to 9-2. The final game of the day went to Warwickshire as their man of the match Ian McFarlane won 4-1 against Simon Rees with a 26.08 average to put the final score at 9-3 to Cornwall.

As Sunday’s games began Cornwall were in a healthy 13-5 lead but although their ladies ‘B’ had won 4-2 the previous day it was now the turn of Warwickshire’s ladies ‘A’ to win by the same margin. Wendy Adams got the first stripe on the board when she won the opening game against Chrissie Kinnaird 3-1. Marian Conway doubled the hosts lead when she won 3-0 against Sarah Brown. Teresa Brookshaw had a 3-1 win over Kirsty Hinchliffe to give the away team their first winner only to see Warwickshire’s two games buffer restored when Natalie Gilbert beat Pauline Mead 3-1 in the fourth. With a further straight 3-0 win for Hannah Meek over Laura Shepherd Warwickshire were in an unbeatable 4-1 lead. Hannah Meek had winning legs of 16, 15 and 28 darts to earn her the team’s match award for her 25.47 average. The last game went to Cornwall when their Tracey Hancock won 3-2 against Courtney Hine to give a final result of 4-2 to the home side.

For a Warwickshire victory a huge win was required from the men’s ‘A’ and the first half of their game looked as though they would get something from the fixture as they stormed into a 5-1 lead at the break. After losing the opener when John Mann beat Gareth Braham 4-1 and taking the home side up to the halfway stage were Steve Hine, Jamie Hughes, Kevin Dowling, Jamie Atkins and Nigel Heydon who in turn won against Matt Knowles (4-2), Neil Meneer (4-0), Greg Hambly (4-3), Jamie Kay (4-2) and Gareth Griffiths (4-3).

Scott Hill reduced the arrears as the second half began winning 4-3 against Jack Wareing but a straight 4-0 win for Matty Washbrooke over Simon Knowles guaranteed at the worst a draw for the men’s ‘A’ side. A 4-3 win for Mike Jones against Wayne Mynard only delayed the final outcome as Warwickshire’s man of the match Danny Lauby beat Rob Ruberry 4-1 with a 30.43 average to put the home team into a winning 7-7-3 lead. Cornwall’s man of the match Lee Hellings (27.78) won 4-1 against Sam Whittaker after Whittaker had won the first leg with a superb 157 outshot and with a similar 4-1 win for Jack Nankervis against Noel Grant the result was a 7-5 win for Warwickshire.

The overall 20-16 score for the weekend once again going to Cornwall for a second successive season leaving Warwickshire sixth in the division and Cornwall fifth.

After missing out on promotion last season Salopian had a tough opener to the new campaign as they played away against Gwynedd who last season played in the L-Style Division One. The away team could not have wished for a better start as Chloe Ames won in straight legs against Mandy Williams with an award winning average of 15.03. The cheers were short-lived for the visitors as 3-1 wins from Rhian Amday and Lynda Roberts over respective opponents Emma Callaghan and Hayley McGuinness gave the hosts a 2-1 lead. Anna Peatroy made it 2-2 when she won 3-0 against Heledd Thomas but two further 3-1 wins from Pat Graham and Laura Jones in turn over Helen Walmsley and Claire Boyle gave Gwynedd the 4- 2 result.

All six of the first half games of the men’s ‘B match went against the first throw advantage as the hosts took the lead three times and had it cancelled out on each occasion. Ben Mitchell was the home team’s first winner beating James Jenkins 4-3 with Dave Bayton the man to wipe out Mitchell’s win when he won 4-1 against Gwyn AP Tomos. Dave Halliday was the second man to give Gwynedd the lead, his 4-2 win over Tony Middleton being erased as Shane Hayward won 4-1 against Alwyn Thomas. Despite Dave Pudge putting the hosts 3-2 up when he won 4-1 against Rowan Price the two teams went into the break all-square at 3-3 after man of the match Mick Unsworth beat Chris Jones 4-2 and had a 23.31 average.

The sequence was broke as early as the first game of the second half when Steve O’Callgahn (Salopian) won 4-1 against Jason Baker and with a similar 4-1 win from Dean Stokes against Mike Simpson Salopian were 5-3 up. Assuring the away side of at least a share of the spoils was Eddie Price as he added his 4-2 win over Rhys Edwards to their tally, the win guaranteed in the very next game as Andy Gilbert won 4-2 against Lee Williams. The last two games both went to Gwynedd as Sion AP Tomos won 4-3 against Glyn Thomas and Dylan Anderson won 4-1 against Matt Maxfield to take the final score to 7-5 in Salopian’s favour.

Going into Sunday’s ‘A’ games the overall score was level at 9-9 with both teams having everything to play for.

The opening four games of the ladies ‘A’ match all went to the player with the first throw advantage, Steph Clarke giving Salopian the early lead when she won 3-0 against Shereen Downs. Jacky Blanks levelled the game when she won 3-1 against Emma Tapp only to see the away team forge ahead again in the third when lady of the match Kate Titley beat Jane Jenkins 3-0 and averaged 23.48. Jac Leggatt (Gwynedd) restored parity in the fourth when she won 3-1 against Tracey Dean before the sequence was ended and the hosts won the last two games, Susan Davies winning 3-2 against Sue Lane and Gaynor Williams beating Julie Griffiths 3-1 to give Gwynedd a 4-2 victory.

Salopian went one up in the men’s ‘A’ game when Mark Graham beat Deian Roberts 4-1 and although Dafydd Williams levelled the game when he won 4-1 against Jamie Chaplin, Salopian went ahead again in the third thanks to a 4-2 win from Shaun Pryce over Scott Bannerman. Extending Salopian’s lead to 3-1 was Dafydd Edwards who accounted for Barry Jones with a 4-1 scoreline and despite a 4-2 win from Gwilym Fon Owen (Gwynedd) over Jon Mansell by the midway point the visitors were 4-2 up with a further win from Ben Bevan over Mike Castro

The first game of the second half saw Andy Evans extend the away team’s lead to 5-2 when he beat Don Robertson 4-2. The following three games all resulted in 4-1 wins with two of them going to the home side and one to the visitors as Kelvin Ducklin (Gwynedd) beat Kacey Jones, Jamie Kynaston (Salopian) won against Dylan Hughes-Jones and Noel Coward (Gwynedd) defeated Gary Crowther to take the score along to 6-4 in Salopian’s favour. Putting up the magical winning seventh game for Salopian was their man of the match Mark Crutchley who in his 4-3 win over Alex Williams he averaged 31.06. Then to end the day, the weekend, the game and the fixture Paul Rowley beat Mike Shaw 4-1 to give Salopian men’s ‘A’ an 8-4 win and an overall 19-17 victory for the weekend.

Officially the fourth season of the UKDA National League commenced on the weekend of the 14th and 15th September, however Shropshire had their opening game in division three, away to Gloucestershire brought forward and played it a week in advance.

The ladies ‘B’ began in fine style with Lauren Kempson giving them the early lead when she won the opener against Sam Higgins 3-0. Doubling Shropshire’s lead was their lady of the match Kirstie Millington who beat Tracey Dix 3-1 with a 13.60 average. From two up the away side were then pegged back to level pegging as Sharon Brewer won 3-1 against Tanya Dolman and Hannah Smith beat Deana Sheldon 3-0. The penultimate encounter went the full five legs distance with Dianne Newton restoring the visitors lead with a 3-2 win over Sharon McNulty. The final game also went the full distance but this one ended up going to Gloucestershire as their Heather Grindle won 3-2 against Gemma Smith to take to see the match finish all-square at 3-3.

It was not such a good start for the men’s ‘B’ as they found themselves trailing 2-0 after Pete Smith won 4-3 against Reece Cook Lucas and Rob Long defeated Kye Simmonds 4-2. Shane Passey stopped the rot and reduced the arrears with his 4-1 win over Ian Beasley and then restoring parity was Mark Zambra who had a similar 4-1 win against Wayne Baker. For the first time in the game Shropshire went ahead in the fifth when Jon Blakemore added his 4-2 success over Dean Thomas to their account but it was all-square at the end of the first half as Rhys Jackson (Gloucestershire) won the sixth against Rob Pierce 4-0.

The away side got the better start of the second half as Rob Pitt with his man of the match performance, a straight 4-0 win over Steve Easton and a 24.44 average clinched the award and took the score to 4-3 to Shropshire. Josh Pickett made it 5-3 when he beat Ian Higgs 4-2 and with a similar 4-2 scoreline Chris Evans won against Clint Keyse to make it 6-3 and put the win beyond the hosts reach. With the winning line in sight the visitors were made to wait as Nathan Meredith’s 4-1 success over Ethan Shaw delayed the Shropshire cheers, however the win came in the very next game as Paul Penfold chalked up the all-important seventh stripe on the board when he defeated Sam Brough 4-2 and with a further 4-0 win for Steve Blewitt in the final game of the day against Keith Lawrence, Shropshire men’s ‘B’ had won 8-4.

Shropshire’s ladies ‘A’ were in terrific form handing out a 6-0 whitewash to their counterparts which was all started by Nicola Ball as she won the first game against Vicky Parmley 3-2. Michele Pritchard made short work of her game against Christine Marsh as she won 3-0 and assuring at least a draw as early as the third game was Sophie Ward who won 3-2 against Kirsty Dixon. Sarah Williams with a lady of the match display won 3-1 against Elaine Powell, took the score to a winning 4-0 margin and collected the team’s award for her 18.73 average. The last two games both finished with 3-2 scorelines, both of them going to Shropshire as in turn Marie Riggs and Jenna-Louise Ball defeated Carol Smith and Suzie Slater to complete the 6-0 rout.

Two winners were all that were required from the men’s ‘A’ to give Shropshire an overall victory for the weekend but the match didn’t have the best of starts as Gloucestershire’s Rhys Jackson and Rich Bambridge won 4-0 against respective opponents Ben Johnson and Andre Knox. Adam Thackeray (Shropshire) was taken the full seven legs distance by Andy Hammond but won the decider to momentarily reduce the deficit to 2-1 only to see Andy Morse add his 4-2 win over Sam Aitkens to the home team’s tally and restore their two games buffer. Shropshire got their vital second winner in game number five, Connor Whitehouse beating Mark Turley with a close 4-3 result. A 4-2 win for Paul Lane over Kevin Harris in the final game of the half took Gloucestershire’s lead to 4-2.

The hosts went further ahead as the second half began, Mark Wellington winning 4-1 against Brian Dolman before Shropshire’s award winner Richard Parker added his 4-2 win over Darrel Williams to their account and took the award for his 25.38 average. In their best run of the game Shropshire then added another winner as Andy Vellender made it two wins in a row when he beat Kieran Smith 4-0 to reduce the arrears to 5-4. Steve Handley and Leslie Higgs gave the home side a winning 7-4 margin when they won in turn 4-3 and 4-2 against Brett Cooper and Andrew Jervis with the final score taken to 7-5 as Chris Fox won the last game of the weekend against Mark Blandford 4-3.

So a final 22-14 win for Shropshire, which albeit it only lasted for one week, it took them to the top of the division three table. It was a great team effort and a superb away victory in the opening game of their new season, hopefully more of the same to come.
