Match number five in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League produced an enticing fixture between Lancashire, who topped the division prior to the fixture and their opponents Yorkshire who were placed fourth, trailing their hosts by some thirty points but with a game in hand. That point’s deficit was halved as Yorkshire romped to a 24-12 victory.

Saturday’s games both went to Yorkshire with the ladies winning 4-2 and the men 9-3 while the Sunday ‘A’ team results saw the ladies finish all square at three each and for the men, once again it was Yorkshire who won 8-4. The win sees Yorkshire move up two places in the table to second still with a game in hand on Lancashire who hold on to pole position with 120 points. Hampshire were formerly second but a 19-17 defeat away to Dorset has seen them drop to third on ninety-seven points, twenty-three short of the leaders. Glamorgan also drop one place in the table to fourth as a result of their 21-15 defeat at Lincolnshire leaving them on ninety-four points.

Match awards for the Premier Division saw Dorset win two as they won both the men’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ with Dan Perry taking the former for his 4-2 win and 30.73 average against Hampshire’s Sam Rooney and Richard Wright earned himself the ‘B’ award for his superb 32.85 average and 4-0 success over Andy Mitchell.

For the ladies ‘A’ the top average went to Essex player Stacey Ellis for her excellent 25.91 average and 3-0 win over Staffordshire’s Danielle Pearce. The top ‘B’ player was Hampshire’s Laura Turner who beat Dorset’s Donna Mabbatt 3-1 with a fantastic 27.18 average.

The Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division saw leaders London somewhat surprisingly held to an 18-18 draw at home playing against Oxfordshire who are currently seated at the foot of the divisional table. Nevertheless the draw has seen London extend their lead from twelve to eighteen points as second placed Northamptonshire went down 23-13 playing at home against Cambridgeshire. With Kent having a bye they drop from third to fourth in the table, eight points behind Hertfordshire who have replaced them in the number three spot following their huge 25-11 win away to West Midlands. Cambridgeshire followed up their win at Northamptonshire by playing a rearranged game one fixture, a home tie with Oxfordshire which they won 21-15 to lift them up into fifth place with eighty-two points, sixteen behind second placed Northamptonshire but with a game in hand.

For the ‘A’ games the top averages went to, for the men Lee Cocks (London) who beat Oxfordshire’s Andrew Quinn 4-2 and for the ladies Derbyshire’s Rose Mort topped the averages with her 24.24 in a 3-0 win over Sussex player Emma Wapshott. Cambridgeshire’s Phil Johnson-Hale was the top man in the men’s ‘B’ games, his 28.63 average and 4-0 win over Northamptonshire’s Alex Dilley earning him the award. The ladies ‘B’ award was shared by Hertfordshire’s Vicky Rannow and Jo Kitchen with both players recording a 20.88 average. Vicky beat West Midlands Jodie Rowlands 3-0 and Jo won by the same 3-0 scoreline against Jacqueline Simmons.

With three wins and a draw in their opening four games Black Country were residing at the top of the L-Style Division One table, that is until they played game number five which was a home fixture against Leicestershire who although two places off the foot of the table they did have a game in hand. The result was 24-12 to Leicestershire to see them move up three places in the table, Black Country losing pole position and dropping to third. Gwent had a 19-17 win at Devon and following that played a rearranged game six fixture, a home tie against Tyne and Wear. With a 23-13 win in that game Gwent have taken over the number one spot with a total of 140 points from six games, their nearest rivals second and third placed Suffolk and Black Country in turn have 111 and 105 points, both of them having a game in hand on Gwent. Suffolk’s fifth game of the season was an away game against Buckinghamshire which they won 22-14.

West Midlands began their game number five fixture in the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division fifth in the table and just six points short of their visitors fourth placed Hertfordshire so a win would almost certainly see them move up the table.

For the ladies it was possibly a weekend to forget as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ lost 6-0.

Kevin Bambrick gave the West Midlands men’s ‘B’ the best possible start when he won 4-3 against Keith Arber but the hosts lead was short-lived as Mason Teese, Ricky Caves, Ian Clarkson and Kieran Brignell in turn won against Ian Stanton (4-0), Alex Simmons (4-1), Jack Aldridge (4-3) and Ryan Locker (4-1) to give Hertfordshire a 4-1 lead. By the break Mark Craddock had pulled one back for the home side with a straight 4-0 win over Ashley Smith.

The second half got off with a little more promise for West Midlands as man of the match Ash Khayat beat Shane Smith 4-1 with a 27.35 average and with John Morris adding his 4-2 win over Scott Curwen to the hosts tally the visitors lead had been erased and the score was level at 4-4. Hertfordshire went ahead again in the ninth when Luke Arber beat Chris Stanley 4-1 and with a 4-3 win for Paul Squirrell over Glen McGrandle the away side were then within an ace of victory. Kieran O’Mahoney kept the home team’s hopes alive of a draw when in the penultimate encounter he won 4-3 against Dean Holtby but a straight 4-0 win for Brad Clark over Paul Pice gave Hertfordshire the 7-5 verdict.

All of the first half games of the men’s ‘A’ match went in favour of the first throw advantage with Hertfordshire taking the lead no fewer than three times and on each occasion having their advantage wiped out by West Midlands players. Winners for Hertfordshire were Tommy Aken, Joe Croft and Rex Cole and replying for West Midlands were Ian Jones, Owen Maiden and Ben Johnson.

The pattern changed as early as the first encounter of the second half as Darren Williams put the hosts in front for the first time in the game when he won 4-2 against Lee Barrow. Sadly the lead only lasted as long as the following game as Thomas Banks (Hertfordshire) beat Scott Baker 4-0 then  Brad Clark won 4-3 against Rob Thompson and with a further 4-2 win for Daniel Varney over Ryan O’Connor the visitors were 6-4 up and guaranteed a share of the points. A man of the performance from Shaun Carroll kept West Midlands in the game, Shaun beating Jack Pledger 4-2 with a 29.11 average leaving the result hinging on the final game of the day. The twelfth and final game went the full seven legs distance with West Midlands Richard Platt salvaging a 6-6 draw when he won 4-3 against Kieran Brignell.

The overall 25-11 defeat saw West Midlands drop from fifth to tenth in the division while their victors moved up into third place just seven points short of second in the table Northamptonshire who have played one game more than them.

Black Country’s fifth game of the season, a home tie with Leicestershire, saw them lose 24-12 after recording  three wins and a draw in their opening four games. The weekend didn’t get off to the best of starts as the Ladies ‘B’ slumped to a 5-1 defeat with Doreen Hunt their sole winner, beating Sam Harris 3-0 with a 17.08 average.

Saturday’s woes continued as the men’s ‘B’ also lost going down 8-4 with John Green, Sam Bissell, Mark Jones and Carl Sparrow their only winners. Taking the match award for his 26.07 average and 3-2 win over Adam Marziano was Mark Jones.

Sunday’s ladies ‘A’ game saw a slight improvement as they finished all-square at 3-3. Heather Wright got the ball rolling with her opening 3-2 win over Kirsty White only to see Leicestershire’s Angela Sheffield win 3-0 against Sarah-Jane Parker and then Kelly Welsh beat Maxine Prosser 4-3 to put the away team 2-1 up. A lady of the match performance from Tammy Chance levelled the score at two each Tammy winning 3-2 against Shannon Reeve with a fine 21.71 average, and then with a 3-1 win for Amy-Leigh Tolley over Liz Brunt Black Country were in an unassailable position leading 3-2. The final game went to the wire with Leicestershire’s Julie Booth just getting the 3-2 edge on Chez Allcock to earn a share of the spoils with a 3-3 draw.

The first two games of the men’s ‘A’ match went to a decider with the visitors Darren Tyler and Matthew Dickinson getting the respective 4-3 results over Jamie Rollinson and Jamie Barrowman. Paul Wells halved the deficit when in the third he won 4-1 against Michael Hibbert, but unfortunately that was to be the home team’s only win of the half as George Willetts lost 4-2 to Anthony Sutton, and Ricky Sudale and Paul Ablett in turn won 4-2 against Dan Nicholls and Wayne Hobday to give the away side 5-1 lead at the midway point of the match..

Things got worse as the second half began, Jason Lole extending Leicestershire’s lead to 6-1 with his 4-1 win over Tom Bissell. The eighth game saw Martin Price chalk up Black Country’s second win as he beat Jaikob Selby-Rivas 4-0 but a 4-2 success for Bradley Coltman over Shane Price put the result beyond the home team’s reach as their opponents were now in a match won position leading 7-2. Then came the hosts best run of the game, two wins in a row as Trev Brennan won 4-2 against Grant Brown and man of the match Rich Bowen won 4-3 against Ben Quenby with a 27.09 average. The final game of the weekend went to the away side’s Andrew Hibbert who beat Rob Smith 4-0 to put the final score at 8-4 to Leicestershire and the overall result for the weekend 24-12, again to Leicestershire.

The defeat has seen Black Country drop from pole position to third on 105 points, some thirty-five short of new leaders Gwent, but with a game in hand.
