Match number nine brought the curtain down for Division One, Division Two and Division Three in the UKDA National League and none provided a more surprising finish to the season than the L-Style Division One as West Midlands pulled off what must have been the biggest shock of the weekend. Going into their home game with Merseyside they were in fourth position and their opponents fifth with 172 and 152 points respectively, West Midlands trailed leaders Derbyshire by 24 points and were 12 short of second placed Suffolk so promotion this season most definitely didn’t look to be on the cards.

Saturday saw the ladies win 4-2 and the men finish all square at 6-6 and as the Sunday games got underway the ladies lost 4-2, but then came the shock as the men became the first team ever in county men’s ‘A’ history to record back-to-back 12-0 wins giving West Midlands an overall 24-12 victory and take their points tally to 199. Meanwhile Suffolk, who were playing away against leaders Derbyshire lost by a massive 27-9 to put them on 193 points and see them drop to fourth in the table, Buckinghamshire held on to third place with 197 points after they won 22-14 at home against County Durham meaning West Midlands finished as runners-up, they and Derbyshire will play next season in the Championship Division.

———————————

Division Two also came up with a somewhat surprising finish as prior to the final games Nottinghamshire were lying fifth in the table, their 161 points some 34 short of leaders Black Country and seven behind second placed Tyne and Wear. Tyne and Wear’s away game against Cumbria was rearranged for the following weekend and with Nottinghamshire winning their home tie with Wiltshire by a huge 29-7 they moved up into second place and were in with a chance of promotion. Tyne and Wear’s rearranged fixture saw them win 22-14 at Cumbria and replace Nottinghamshire in the second promotional spot with the same 193 points as Nottinghamshire but with one more bonus point than their rivals. Phew!! How close was that!!

Promotion and indeed the title for division two was never in doubt, Black Country confirming their second title and second promotion in two years when they completed their programme with a 21-15 home win over Clwyd to end the season on 219 points, twenty-six more than both Tyne and Wear and Nottinghamshire.

Best average of the day for division two was supplied by Nottinghamshire’s Darren Layden who with a straight 4-0 win over Marc Dewsbury chalked up a magnificent 35.79 average.

———————————

Prior to game nine matches being played in division three Northumberland were sitting top of the table with 181 points, Salopian were second just one point behind the leaders and Middlesex third a further one point adrift. However Northumberland had completed all eight of the scheduled fixtures and their hopes of promotion lasting onlyuntil their rivals had played off their final games.

As it turned out Salopian’s final game was a home tie with Middlesex and all they required for the title was a draw, but should there be a winner then the winners would be promoted as champions and the losers finish as runners-up. It was always going to be a tight game and as expected the result was close, the 19-17 win going to Middlesex to take their points tally to 201 with their host’s four points behind them on 197. Nevertheless it was promotion for both teams and on the day it turned out that both teams were winners.

———————————

In the Cosmo Darts Premier Division there was very little change as the top seven places remained the same with Yorkshire continuing go to lead the field and taking their total points to 226 after winning 24-12 away to Staffordshire, however they have had their lead reduced from thirteen to just eight points as their closest rivals Lancashire had a huge 29-7 home win over bottom of the division Cheshire. Third placed Essex finished all-square at 18-18 in their fixture at Lincolnshire and now trail Lancashire by some twenty-one points but remain four to the good on their hosts who are in fourth place. Fifth in the division Hampshire, prior to their home fixture with Warwickshire were level on the same 168 points as their visitors but a 21-15 win for the home side has seen them go nine points clear of their sixth placed opponents.

On an individual note Lancashire’s Martin Atkins was in tremendous form winning 4-1 against Cheshire’s Joe Rowland and averaging 34.72.

———————————

It’s as-you-were for the top four teams in the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division with leaders Dorset increasing their lead over second placed Cleveland from three to fourteen points after they won 22-14 away against their nearest rivals. Third in the division Humberside moved to within two points of Cleveland despite losing 19-17 at home to Oxfordshire who move up the table two places to fifth. Hertfordshire are currently placed fourth, their 22-14 home win over Gwent seeing them reduce the arrears on Humberside from thirteen to just five points.

After a disappointing 22-14 home defeat to Lancashire in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League Warwickshire had another tough fixture in game nine when they travelled to take on Hampshire. Prior to the fixture both fifth placed Hampshire and sixth in the division Warwickshire were locked together on 168 points with the result vital to both teams.

It all began well for the away side as the ladies ‘B’ chalked up a 4-2 win but they didn’t have the best of starts as the home side opened up a 2-0 lead when Abi Jurd beat Melanie Jones 3-1 and Karen Webber won 3-0 against Courtney Hine. It took a lady of the match performance from Hannah Meek to stop the Hampshire charge, Hannah winning 3-1 against Joanne Senior with an 18.97 average. Adding to Hannah’s win were Nina Bolt, Angela Jones and Chloe McKivett who in turn won against Dawn Simmonds (3-1), Susan Power (3-1) and Pennie Lewis (3-1).

Completing what was the perfect day for Warwickshire were the men’s ‘B’ who won their game 7-5. Mark Carter opened up with a 4-1 win over Wes Smith only to see the home team’s Kev Woodward win 4-3 against Adam Hancock to level the score. Mark Strong put the away side in front for a second time when he beat Andy Mitchell 4-1 but again the score was levelled as Ryan Furness won 4-2 against Noah Rose after Rose had gone 2-0 up. Game number five saw Hampshire take the lead for the first time in the game as Alan Casey added his 4-0 win over Mark Martin to their tally but by the midway point it was all-square as Karl Reynolds with a maximum and twelve scores of a ton or more won 4-2 against Adrian Wright.

Giving Warwickshire the lead for a third time was Pete Hughes who not only beat Jamie Kelling 4-3 but won his team’s match award for his 27.50 average. Once again the hosts came fighting back as Darren Barnes came from two down against Lee Miller to win 4-2 to take the score to 4-4. A 4-2 win from Warwickshire’s Sam Price over John Madgwick plus a 4-1 success for Will Naylor over Will Buckman assured the away team of at least a share of the spoils. Lee Ward’s 4-0 win over Jenson Walker not only kept Hampshire in the hunt for a draw but also forced a decider in the final game between Andy Jurd (Hampshire) and Martin Tonks. Tonks in 20,17 and 15 darts stormed into a 3-0 lead only to see Jurd win the next three legs in 16,18 and 21 darts to take the game to a final seventh leg. In what was a tense decider in which the result could easily have gone either way as both players struggled with their finishing doubles but it was Martin Tonks who eventually found the all-important double eight to clinch a 4-3 win and an overall 7-5 result for his team.

For Warwickshire ladies ‘A’ Sunday’s game was one to quickly forget as they slumped to an incredible 6-0 defeat after no fewer than five of their six players won the first leg. Chalking up the big win for Hampshire were Becca Edwards, Sue Lowther, Tracy North, Jane Monaghan, Jo Rolls and Laura Turner who in turn beat their counterparts Tammy Montgomery (3-1), Donna Pinch (3-2), Wendy Adams (3-1), Sue Gulliver (3-2), Caroline Pike (3-1) and Natalie Gilbert (3-2).

With only the men’s ‘A’ result to be added for the weekend all was not lost for the visitors as Hampshire only had a narrow 13-11 lead. That lead was then extended to 15-11 when the home team’s Steve Musson and Adam Lipscombe beat respective opponents Jack Wareing 4-2 and Dave Hill 4-1. Carl Green reduced the men’s arrears to 2-1 with his 4-3 win over Luke Getty after Getty had gone 1-0 and 2-1 up. The hosts then took their lead to 4-1 with further 4-0 and 4-2 wins from Justin Bradshaw and Sam Dyke who in turn accounted for Noel Grant and Mark Carter. By the halfway stage the score was 4-2 to Hampshire as Warwickshire’s man of the match Jamie Atkins found to form to beat Aaron Turner 4-1 after Turner had won the opening leg, however after trailing 1-0 Atkins then took the following four legs in 17, 18, 15 and twelve darts with 114 and 100 game shots in the last two legs giving him a tremendous 30.91 average.

Warwickshire reduced the deficit to 4-3 as the second half got underway, Nigel Heydon winning 4-2 against Chas Barstow before Hampshire won three-in-a -row to put the score beyond Warwickshire’s reach. Taking the score to 7-3 were Graham Chalk, Sam Rooney and Richard North who accounted for Chris Wickenden (4-3), Ian Shaw (4-2) and Gareth Braham (4-2). In the penultimate encounter Matty Washbrooke (Warwickshire) kicked off his game against James Nicholson with a 110 checkout in fifteen darts. He then went 3-0 up with further wins in 17 and 25 darts and although Nicholson won the fourth in 20 darts Washbrooke wrapped up his 4-1 win with a thirteen darts leg. The final game of the weekend saw Mike Symes win 4-3 against Josh Jones to give Hampshire men’s ‘A’ an 8-4 win and an overall 21-15 victory for the weekend.

West Midlands, after a bit of a shaky start to the season in the L-Style Division One of the UKDA National League found themselves as they went into their final game of the season at home to Merseyside fourth in the division on 172 points, 24 behind leaders Derbyshire and 12 short of second placed Suffolk so promotion was little more than a pipedream, but that’s no how it turned out.

Saturday’s ladies ‘B’ romped into an unbeatable 3-0 lead with Shellbie Simmons winning 3-0 against Lynn Anderson, Kelly Doleman beating Sandra Rule 3-1 and Sarah Maybury winning 3-2 against Ellie Downey, Sarah’s 18.78 average earning her the team’s match award. Julie Whelan stopped the rot for Merseyside with a 3-1 result against Jodie Rowlands and with a 3-2 win for Janet Sorrell over Claire Hobbs the away side were back in the game, but not for long as last on for the Midlanders was Tara Simmons-Fullwood who won 3-2 against Gill Jones to give the home side the 4-2 verdict.

The first four games of the men’s ‘B’ encounter all went against the first throw advantage, Neil Pointon giving the hosts the early lead when he won 3-1 against Tom Lockyer, only to see Dave Cunningham win 3-2 against Christopher Stanley to level the score. West Midlands went ahead again in the third when Glen McGrandle added his 3-1 win over Sam Jones to their tally, but once again the lead was cancelled out as John Prescott beat Ian Stanton 3-2. For the first time in the game Merseyside went ahead in the fifth with a 3-2 win for Adrian Heathcote against Mark Maiden and with a similar 3-2 result over Dean Simmons-Fullwood by Ben Jones Merseyside were 4-2 up at the halfway stage.

Dave Richards got the second half underway with a win for the visitors winning 3-0 against John Morris to extend their lead to 5-2 and although Kieran Mahoney reduced that deficit to 5-3 with his 3-1 success against Phillip Bennett an Anthony Hitchmough 3-1 win against Jack Aldridge assured Merseyside of a share of the spoils. Ben Johnson delayed any possible celebrations that the visitors may have had as he won 3-1 against Danny Russon and with a man of the match display from Mark Craddock in his 3-1 win over Mike Warren with a terrific 31.92 average the score was 6-5 to Merseyside and outcome was now all dependant on the final game. Game number twelve went the full five legs distance with Karl Hughes getting the better of the 3-2 result against Dan Nuttie to earn West Midlands a 6-6 draw.

Gemma Barrett (West Midlands) lost the opening game of the ladies ‘A’ 3-0 to Emma Barlow and although Jacqueline Maiden’s 3-1 success over Tracy Morrison levelled the game the away side then went into an unassailable 4-1 lead thanks to wins from Vicki Lloyd, Viv Cullimore and Jan Hardman who in turn defeated Jodie Rowlands (3-0), Katherine Jenkins (3-2) and Kat McLean (3-2). Keeping the best till last West Midlands reduced the final score to 4-2 when their top player Shellbie Simmons beat Claire Sykes 3-2 with a 20.21 average.

Then came the shock of the weekend as the West Midlands men’s ‘A’ made history when for the second consecutive fixture they recorded back-to-back 12-0 wins, the first time ever in the men’s ‘A’ county history this has happened.

Making this historical event happen were Rob Thompson, Scott Baker, Owen Maiden, Ryan O’Connor, Kevin Bambrick, Shaun Carroll, Jon Platt, Ash Khayat, Richard Platt, Darren Williams, Ian Jones and Michael Baker who in turn won against Lee Palfreyman (4-0), Dave Harnick (4-2), Mike Addison (4-1), Steve Gow (4-3), Kev Lloyd (4-2), Johnny Brammeld (4-3), Paul Smith (4-1), Clive Rule (4-2), Alan Magee (4-2), Terry Roach (4-3), Robbie Gorst (4-2) and Joey Palfreyman (4-3). Man of the match for the West Midlands was Shaun Carroll who had a fantastic 31.92 average in his win over Johnny Brammeld.

West Midlands Men’s ‘A’ Team

The 12-0 whitewash by the men’s ‘A’ gave an overall 24-12 win for the West Midlands and take their points tally to 199. What a tremendous climax to the season!!

———————————

For quite some time now promotion for Black Country for a second successive season has been accepted by one and all but a final 21-15 home win over Clwyd gave them the Division Two title and also confirmed them as champions for two consecutive seasons.

From 1-0 down when Sarah Tromans lost 3-1 to Nat Davey, Black Country then opened up a 3-1 lead in the ladies ‘B’ game when Maxine Prosser beat Hayley Street 3-2. Amy-Leigh Tolley won 3-2 against Rachael Simpson and Doreen Hunt beat Mary Williams 3-0 to lift the lady of the match trophy for her 19.78 average. Despite the turn around a win was not to be for the home team as Izzy Thomas won 3-0 against Heather Wright and Abby Hamilton won the final game against Angie Carroll to put the final score all-square at 3-3.

After opening up a 2-0 lead when Martyn Harper beat Chris Dobbins 3-2 and Connor Whitehouse won 3-0 against Nick Hailes, the men’s ‘B’ were reliant on man of the match Mark Rollinson to level the score in the sixth game as Ian Bride, Craig Billingsley and Paul Crimes in turn won against Shaun Hill (3-2), Gavin Smith (3-1) and Cayden Smith (3-0). Clwyd made the final score a little more respectable as Ady Maddocks won 3-0 against Gaz Johnson and Pete Walker won the last game against Neil Steventon 3-2 to give a 7-5 result in favour of the Black Country.

It was not a good end to the season for the ladies ‘A’ as all of the first five games went in favour of the first throw advantage giving Clwyd the 3-2 edge to take into the last game. Judith Williams put the away side one up when she won 3-2 against Shannon Hall and although lady of the match Chez Allcock (15.64) won 3-1 against Jackie Brighton to level the score a 3-0 win over Sarah Jane Parker by Bethan Jones restored the visitors lead. The men’s ‘A’ game began with a 4-3 win for Clwyd’s Andy Alker over Shane Sheridan but that was where the bad news finished in the first half for the hosts as Trevor Brennan levelled the game with his 4-1 win over Steve Probert and then the home team went ahead when Tom Bissell not only beat Rob Lawrence 4-2 but at the same time won the man of the match award for his 28.36 average. From 2-1 up Black Country then took the score nicely along to 5-1 by the break as Rob Smith beat Mark Leach 4-1, Stephen Jones won 4-3 against Luke Smith and Reece Colley accounted for Phil Jones with a straight 4-0 verdict.

The visitors were able to slightly reduce the deficit as the second half began, Cole Davey winning 4-2 against Ben Hollowood but the with two 4-3 wins supplied by Dan Homer and Paul Wells against Noel Bagby and Adam Paxton the Black Country men’s ‘A’ were home and dry leading 7-2. Taking the score along to 8-2 was Rich Bowen with his 4-2 win over Dai Davies and although Clwyd won the penultimate game when James Beeton beat Dan Nicholls 4-3 the final score was 9-3 to the hosts with Shane Price rounding off the weekend ‘s fixture with a 4-1 win over Bryan Moran.

Salopian went into their final game of the season in Division Three of the UKDA National League, a home fixture against Middlesex, knowing that the winner would be promoted as champions and the losers would finish as runners-up as the current leaders Northumberland, who were on 181 points had already completed all of their eight games and Salopian were just one point behind them on 180 with their opponent third with 179 points.

The weekend didn’t begin well for the hosts as the ladies ‘B’ slumped to a 5-1 defeat with first on Sue Lane their sole winner. Sue played against Marlene Pope, won 3-2 and being the only winner took the lady of the match award for her 15.57 average. After Sue’s win her team mates went down Karen Weston 3-2 to Tirion Vickery, Rachael Mooney lost 3-1 to Michele Copas, Jenny Sallans beat Hayley McGuinness 3-0, Hayleigh Shaw won 3-1 against Kate Titley and rounding off the win for Middlesex was Vickie Kiely with her 3-0 victory over Racheal Williams.

The men’s ‘B’ had a good start as Martin Riggs won the opener against Harvey Wilkinson 3-1 and second on Shaun Pryce beat Craig De-Almeida 3-0. The third game went the full five legs distance with Chris Grannell just getting the edge on Ben Bevan to chalk up the first win for Middlesex. Glyn Thomas was quick to restore Salopian’s two games buffer as he won 3-2 against George Rich and although Dan Wheatley’s 3-1 win over Gary Crowther momentarily reduced the arrears for the away team Daniel Astbury ended the first half in style with a man of the match 3-0 win over Rich Ive with a 27.33 average and at the same time opened up a 4-2 lead for Salopian.

Although the outlook looked bright after the first six games by the eighth the scoreline was level as Tim Green beat James Mansell 3-2 and Scott Robertson won 3-1 against Ian Evans. The hosts lead was restored in the ninth when Paul Ashworth won 3-1 against Adam Finch only to see parity restored in the tenth when Brian Green beat Darren Lane 3-0. Mark Jones (Salopian) had a straight 3-0 win over Luke Nelson in the penultimate encounter and with a 3-1 win for Jamie Kynaston over Steve Goddard in the final game the result was a 7-5 victory for the hosts.

Going into Sunday’s ‘A’ games the overall score stood at 10-8 in favour of Middlesex but both teams still had everything to play for.

Steph Clarke was first on for the ladies ‘A’ and her 3-0 win over Sindy Stiles gave the home team the early lead. With a similar 3-0 result Margaret Sutton cancelled out Clarke’s win as she won against Claire Boyle. Salopian went ahead for a second time when their lady of the match Evonne Taylor, with a straight 3-0 win and a superb 21.17 average accounted for Lisa Brosnan, then with a further 3-0 win for Tracey Dean over Louise Grannell, Salopian were in an unbeatable 3-1 position. The last two games both went to the wire with the Middlesex pair Leah Nelson and Leanne Palmer winning 3-2 in turn against Sarah Roberts and Julie Griffiths to put the final score level at 3-3.

The men’s ‘A’ now required an 8-4 win to ensure they were promoted as champions and all began well as Jon Mansell won 4-1 against Ian Bartlett and making it 2-0 for the home team was Paul Rowley who had a 4-0 win over Steve Rose. Despite the early lead it was level-pegging by the fourth as Jason Neville and Tony Andrews replied for Middlesex with respective 4-1 and 4-0 wins against Steven Ritchie and Scott Dockerty and by the midway point the visitors had opened up a 4-2 lead as Allen Bond and Matty Finch added their 4-3 and 4-0 wins over Mark Crutchley and Ben Morgan to the Middlesex tally.

It got worse as the second half kicked off with Joshua Burksfield beating Kacey Jones 4-1 before Salopian had their best run of the game winning four-in-a-row which all began with a 4-1 win from Eddie Price over Pat Cleghorn and was followed up with a similar 4-1 win from Terry Nash against Steve Dettmer, then a 4-3 win from Ash Hilditch over George Wilkinson and making up the quartet of wins was man of the match John Roberts who had a 28.03 average in his 4-1 win against Tom Dallender. The final game of the weekend saw Chris Everley win 4-3 against Matt Esley to put the result for the men’s ‘A’ level at 6-6.

Shropshire completed their season in Division Three of the UKDA National League with an away game against Wirral with the two teams placed fourth and fifth in the table on 145 and 140 points respectively.

In the ladies games the ‘B’ side finished with a 3-3 draw while the ‘A’ team ended up on the wrong side of a 4-2 scoreline.

Wirral had the better start to the ladies ‘B’ game as Pat Moody won 3-0 against Sara Jones and Tina Nolan doubled their lead with her 3-2 success over Kirsty Jenks. Joanne Meachin was Shropshire’s first winner when in the third game she won 3-1 against Emma Evans, her 16.79 average earning her the team’s match award. Two-in-a-row 3-1 wins from Michele Pritchard and Sandra Beardsmore over their respective opponents Joanne Toye and Natt Farragher turned the game around and saw Shropshire go from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead leaving the outcome of the match hinging on the final game. The last encounter went the full five legs distance with Wirral’s Debbie Robinson just getting the 3-2 verdict over Jayne Downey to put the final score at three each.

The men’s ‘B’ game was most definitely a game of two halves as Wirral opened up a 5-0 lead with four of the game going to a decider. Providing the home side’s wins were Bryn Suckley, Kieran Nolan, Tom Hartley, Phil Hignett and Chris Sharp who in turn won against Steve Lynch, Rushpal Bhogal, Clark Cook, Chris Hill and Lee Shaw all losing 3-2 apart from Clark Cook who went down 3-1. The half however did end on a high for Shropshire as Jon Blakemore chalked up their first stripe with a straight 3-0 win over Carl Coulls.

Shropshire’s fight back continued as the second half began, Brian Hickman winning 3-2 against Phil Lambson and then Martin Price having a 3-0 success against Steve Gannon. Wirral moved to within an ace of victory in the ninth when Terry Clancy won 3-1 against Stu Kendrick but keeping the away team in with a chance of a draw was Luke Wildman with his 3-2 win over Dave Gore before Shropshire’s man of the match Dan Downey beat Les Street 3-0, his 23.48 average earning the team’s match award and also still keeping hopes alive of a draw. Last on for Wirral was Carl Robinson who faced up to Chris Evans, Evans coming up trumps for Shropshire with a super 3-0 win to put the final score all square at 6-6.

The ladies ‘A’, after going one down when their Kelly Haverson lost 3-1 to Kim Holden then drew level as lady of the match Sophie Ward with a 3-1 win over Steph Miller and a 16.39 average won the award. Game three was close with the home team’s Julie Baines getting the better of Jenna-Louise Ball in what was a 3-2 result and with a further 3-1 win for Sandra James over Deana Sheldon Wirral were 3-1 up. Marie Riggs 3-2 win against Jen Taylor kept the away side in the game but a final 3-1 win from Pam Courts over Annmarie Williams gave the hosts the 4-2 win.

With the two ladies and the men’s ‘B’ results added the men’s ‘A’ required a 7-5 win to get a draw and an 8-4 result to seal the win, an opening 4-3 win for Andy Jarvis over Scott Hudson set them off on the right path, however the lead was short-lived as Darren Bradley beat Jamie Webb 4-1 and Robbie Green won 4-2 against Josh Pickett. A 4-2 win for Chris Fox against Chris Reid levelled the score at 2-2 only to see Wirral go 4-2 up by the halfway point after Jamie Green won 4-1 against Dave Bayton and Steve Maish beat Richard Parker 4-3.

The hosts lead was extended to 5-2 as the second half got underway with Steve McNally beating Paul Harrison 4-2 before Shropshire had their best run of the match when they won three games in a row. Reece Cook-Lucas won 4-2 against Andy Cummins, Simon Pritchard had a 4-1 result over Lleyton Molyneux and Kevin Harris levelled the game at five each with his 4-2 win over Marc Lynam. Wirral moved to within an ace of victory when Mike Williamson beat Phil Clarke 4-2 but they were unable to seal a win as Shropshire’s man of the match Sam Aitkens came up trumps in the final game to beat Robert Ward 4-2 with a 28.73 average giving a final score of 6-6.

The overall result was a rather close 19-17 to the home team Wirral which saw them finish their campaign in fourth place on 162 points while Shropshire ended their season in the same position as they did last season placed sixth but on the same 162 points as their opponents in fourth place and also with twenty-two more than what they achieved last season, so all-in-all it was not a bad season for Shropshire and who knows what next season will bring.
