Christmas 2021 Knockouts

Once again there were numerous knockouts over the Christmas period the Coventry Christmas Open 2021 providing another class day with some great darts throughout.

First up was the Pairs Knockout which attracted a total of 34 entries which because of the class of players entering was always going to be tough battle for one and all. Eventually the final was fought out between the Mark Strong and Gareth Braham partnership with their final opponents Steve Hine and Noel Grant, the latter pairing taking the title with a 4-1 result.

For the Singles Knockout there were 72 entries played out in four groups to a winner to make up the semi-finals. In the first of the semis Chris Wickenden beat Jamie Atkins 6-1 and with a closer 6-3 result Prakash Jiwa beat James Richardson to set up what was a pulsating final battle.

With the darts in the opening leg Prakash Jiwa took the leg in 19 darts which set the pattern for the first six legs as they all went to the player with the first throw advantage. Chris Wickenden with 2×100 and 180 levelled in 14 darts only to see Jiwa take the lead again in 17 darts. For a second time parity was restored, Wickenden this time adding a 19 darts leg to his account. Taking the lead for a third time Jiwa on that occasion taking 20 darts before his opponent with a score of 140 followed by a 107 game shot made it 3-3 in 15 darts.

For the first time in the game Chris Wickenden took the lead in the seventh leg with a second consecutive 15 darts leg. Jiwa’s advantage was restored in the ninth as he added an 18 darts winning leg in the eighth and then a 20 darts leg in the ninth to put him within an ace of victory.

The penultimate leg produced the fastest leg of the final as Chris Wickenden rattled off scores of 180,140,100 and then 49 to leave double sixteen which he got with his thirteenth dart to force a decider.

The big scores eluded Wickenden in the deciding leg managing just the one three figure score to his opponents 100, 121 and 100 which gave him all the breathing space he required to get down to 60 which he finished with his seventeenth dart to crown him champion in what was a memorable climax to a fantastic day of darts.

Neil Pritchard and Prakash Jiwa (Winner)
