Warwickshire were quick to bounce back from their opening day defeat against Yorkshire in the premier division of the Riley’s BDO Inter County Championships with a terrific 24-12 away win against Oxfordshire.

Saturday’s games saw the ladies record their second consecutive 3-3 draw with Wendy Adams (19.30) taking the match award, while the men beat their counterparts 8-4, Mark Archer the top player with a 25.69 average.

The ‘A’ team games on Sunday once again saw the ladies making it two in a row finishing all square at 3-3 and on this occasion it was Sue Gulliver’s 21.78 average that took the match award.

The men were in terrific form chalking up a convincing 10-2 win, their top average was 28.92 supplied by Ian McFarlane.

The win has seen Warwickshire move up four places in the overall league table from eighth to fourth.

In division two West Midlands played hosts to Norfolk and were looking to add to their first match 20-16 win over Leicestershire. There were mixed fortunes for the ladies as the ‘B’ team won 4-2 and the ‘A’ suffered a reversal of their opening day 5-1 win. Heather Wright took the ‘B’ teams award with an 18.33 average, while Sarah Roberts (16.70), the sole ‘A’ team winner won the lady of the match award for the second successive game.

Sean Carrol (26.63) was the top man in the men’s ‘B’ team 6-6 draw and Doug Thompson, with a 27.56 average was the ‘A’ team’s ,am of the match as they romped to a 10-2 victory.

The win takes the West Midlands one place up the overall table to third place, six points behind leaders Somerset and second placed Cleveland, who are both on 52 points.

On the agenda for the Sheldon and District Winter League was the preliminary round of their League Cup. In the premier division games three of the four games finished with 6-3 results, wins for Saltley Amateur Gardeners, Crown at Shard End and Sheldon Dukes. Crown at Olton made their progress into the next round with a close 5-4 verdict over Mackadown Riley’s.

In the division one all three games had a 6-3 winning margin Yardley Ex Colts, Holy Souls and Willclare Sport and Social in turn losing out to Raven, Sheldon Social and Shard End Social.

Winners form division two were, Baldwin Bears, Highwood Exiles, Small Heath Amateur Gardeners and Riley’s Wings.

It was not a good week for the Riley’s in the Tettenhall Wednesday night League as leaders Riley’s ‘B’ lost 5-2 away to Otter and Vixen ‘B’ and a s a result now share the top spot with Wednesfield FC, who won their home game with Bushbury Arms ‘B’ 6-1. Both of the two top teams have exactly the same 46 points, are level on average and have played the same 27 games.

Riley’s ‘A’ were also losers, going down 4-3 at fourth placed Moreton and drop one place to fifth. The final fixture of the season see’s both Riley’s teams at home, the ‘B’ side take on middle of the table Bushbury Arms ‘B’, while the ‘A’ team play hosts to title chasers Wednesfield FC, should be two very interesting results.

Just one game played in the Small Heath League this week and that was a preliminary round fixture of their Upside Down Cup and saw Clock Inn defeat Custard House Flights to progress to the first round proper.

Round one of the Open Cup was on the fixture card for the Pip Club League and the eight winners going through to the quarter finals are Travellers, Wilnecote Club, Royal Oak (Polesworth), Dolphin, Bulls Head ‘A’ (Polesworth), Old Liberal, Bulls Head (Two Gates) and Belgrave Club.

The Netherton Thursday Night League have got their new season underway and after only three fixtures only three of the thirteen starters are able to boast a 100% win record. Rose and Crown lead the way with a perfect six points, Fairfield have played just two games and have won both of them and the other team without defeat is Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club, who have played just the one game so far.

Rose and Crown’s start has been convincing with 8-1 wins over both Chainmakers and Pensnett Memorial Club, their other win was 6-3 against Prince of Wales.

Only three games were played in the Camp Hill League, all of them finishing with a close 4-3 scoreline. Shaftmoor Lions, Scruffy Ringers and Bordesley Labour Club were all winners, defeating in turn Station, Wagonners and Devil’s Club.

Brickmakers celebrations for winning the Cradley Heath Tuesday Night League title had to be put on hold this week after a surprising 4-3 home defeat by eighth in the table Roost ‘A’. Chainmakers ‘B’ reduced the arrears with a 6-1 win against Bulls Head, but remain eight points behind the leaders, as do Yeltz Bar, who beat Prince of Wales 4-3/

There were rare wins for lowly Bird in Hand and Boat ‘B’ in division one of the Wolverhampton Tuesday Night League this week. Next to bottom Bird in Hand had a 6-1 over bottom team Merry Boys, while Boat ‘B’, who are three places off the bottom had a similar 6-1 against Penn Bowling, who are seventh in the table.

With Otter and Vixen ‘B’ having a bye this week Village ‘A’ extended their lead to six points with a 4-3 win at Ashmore Inn.

In division two it’s neck and neck between Village ‘B’ and Bull, both teams locked on 44 points. The former, who lead on average, handed out a 7-0 whitewash to their visitors King Charles, while Bull won 4-3 at Harrowby.

The Bell lost ground in the Rowley Monday Night League title race after going down 5-4 at home to top team Bulls Head (Rowley). The leaders now have 52 points to Bell’s 44. Also on 44 points are Bull Terrier, who have moved into second place, and fourth in the table Ivy Bush ‘Z’. Third placed Bell have played one more fixture than the other teams in the top four.

The 12 hour darts Marathon recently held at the Highwood pub in aid of the Tiny Babies Appeal at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital raised a fantastic £700. Kath Depper would like to thank everyone involved. Well done to all.
