It was not a good finish to the season in the BDO Inter County Championships for local counties Warwickshire and West Midlands. Warwickshire completed their premier division programme with a home tie against Kent, the only winning team being the men’s ‘B’ who had an 8-4 result with Robert Hawker (28.82) taking the match award. The ‘A’ side’s top player was Nigel Heydon (28.43) in their 8-4 reversal.
The ladies ‘A’ lost their tie 4-2 with Sue Gulliver (19.71) taking her second consecutive lady of the match award. The ‘B’ team shared the points in a 3-3 draw, losing just once in the season, 4-2 to Cheshire in December. Donna Pinch took the ‘B’ team’s award with an 18.09 average.
It was a really bad end of season for West Midlands as they not only lost 20-16 away to Derbyshire but they also lost their division one status as they finished bottom of the table and will compete next season in division two. The men’s ‘A were the only winners, a 7-5 margin with Ian Jones recording the team’s best average of 31.57. Doug Thompson made it two match awards in a row when he chalked up an amazing 33.40 average to take the ‘B’ team’s award.
Jackie Crew (18.21) was the best of the bunch for the ladies ‘A’ as they finished all square at 3-3, while Shellbie Simmons (16.30) was the only ‘B’ team winner as they went down 5-1.
