Cheshire v Warwickshire
Warwickshire rounded off their 2012 fixtures in the premier division of the Riley’s BDO Inter County Championships with an away game against Cheshire, a match in which Warwickshire badly needed points to lift them away from the foot of the table following two previous defeats.
The ladies ‘B’ soon found themselves trailing 2-0 when Roasalyne Davies beat Kim Morris 3-0 and Kath Conway won 3-1 against Tracey Edgecombe.
Donna Pinch (Warwickshire) laid on a lady of the match performance in her 3-1 win over Bev Martin averaging 21.23 and with a further 3-0 win from Kat Spanswick over Jill Jodrill the game was all square at 2-2.
Lyn Marsden assured the home team of at least a share of the points when she accounted for Wendy Adams with a 3-1 result. Heidi Williams chalked up the magical fourth winning game for Cheshire when she beat Marian Conway 3-2, putting the final score at 4-2.
The men’s ‘B’ opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to David Atkins and Paul Deslandes at the expense of Paul McCrevey and Stuart Kellett. Although Lee Holmes and Mark Cairney erased Warwickshire’s advantage, they went 5-2 up with further wins from Antony Allen, Mark Westgarth and Steve Giddings. Westgarth beat Robert Arrowsmith 4-3, his tremendous 30.26 average giving him the match award.
A 4-3 win from Charlie Burns over Jimmy Hill reduced the arrears but Carl Green guaranteed at least a draw for Warwickshire when he won in four straight legs against Daniel Smithers.
At 6-3 up that turned out to be the last winner for the away side as Paul Phillips, Andy Copey and Steve Lomas all won for Cheshire to grab them a 6-6 draw.
Louise Graham was the sole winner for Warwickshire in the first four games, Gill O’Shea, Anastasia Dobromyslova and Sherrie Yeomans replying for the hosts. Trina Gulliver’s (21.47) 3-0 win over Sue Cusick took the result to the final game between Andrea Hunt and Caroline Pike. The outcome was a 3-1 win for Pike to end the game at 3-3.
At the halfway stage of the men’s ‘A’ game Warwickshire had opened up an encouraging 4-2 lead with wins from Mark Carter, Jamie Atkins, Noel Grant and Steve Hine. Responding for Cheshire had been Dave Bird and Peter Boughey.
Dave Harris pulled one back for the home team only to see Nigel Heydon (Warwickshire) beat Stuart Kellett 4-2 and in the process record an award winning average of 30.24. Cheshire came back again, this time through Carl Dennel, but a win from Kevin Dowling put the visitors in a no lose situation at 6-4 up.
Rounding off the game and the weekends fixture were David Pallett and John Brammeld for Cheshire, who in turn beat Tom Aldridge and Ian McFarlane to give a 6-6 result and an overall score of 19-17 to Cheshire.
Fortunately, despite the loss Warwickshire remained in the same position in the table, two places from bottom as the teams below them, Kent lost 19-17 away to Yorkshire and bottom team Surrey went down 21-15 at home to Glamorgan, it could have been much worse if they had both won.
