It’s been a week of high scores and strange results in the Sheldon and District Summer League. The biggest surprise was probably the 5-3 win by group five’s Yardley Arms. Without a win in four games they played hosts to top of the table Maggies and their win lifted off the foot of the table to third, Maggies however, lost the top spot and dropped to second behind Farthings, whose 6-2 win away to Shard End Social puts them on the same seven points as Maggies, but with one leg to the good.

In group six Custard House Flights remain in the bottom position after holding leaders Langley hall Sports and Social to a 4-4 draw. Group three’s Scanlons moved off the bottom position when they chalked up their first win of the campaign, a 6-2 home success over fourth placed Pavilions. In the same group leaders New Firs Flights went down for the first time in six games, losing by the surprisingly large margin of 6-2 to second placed Custard House ‘B’. Flights stay ahead of Custard House by one point.

No fewer than thirteen maximums were recorded in the week, G.Stamps (Riley’s Arrows) notching two of them.

The Pip Club League staged the first round of their Division Cups. In the first division there were wins for Birchmoor Club, Dolphin, Sports Bar 180 and Red Lion, while in division two progressing to round two will be Bolehall Swifts, Pip Club, Bulls Head (Polesworth) and Old Liberal Club.

It’s tight at the top of both divisions in the Forest of Arden Summer League. In division one Riley’s Red Arrows are top on 8 points, but right on their heels are their local rivals Riley’s Flights, who have the same number of points but trail slightly on average. Third placed Old Bill and Bull are a further two points adrift.

A similar situation exists in the second division where Harvester and Sheldon Arrows are top, both teams having the same 8 points and exactly the same average. Yet again, as in division one, the third placed team, Chelmsley Town are two points behind the leading duo.

In the Small Heath League Custard House and Mitre, the two top teams met on the formers board. The opening two games went the way of the home team, before Mitre started clawing their way back into the game and going on to win 6-2, which was a somewhat flattering result for the leaders.

At the St Andrews Tavern, Devils played host to the Wagon & Horses. Despite battling hard the home team found themselves 3-0 down before taking three of the next four to go into the last game 3-4 down. In a tense last game, which went to the last leg Wagon denied Devils a deserved first point of the season as they wrapped up a 5-3 victory.

At the Emerald Club, Custard House Flights battled hard and were a little unfortunate to go into the final game 4-3 down. Once again the final game went to a deciding leg to give Emerald a 5-3 win and keep them in contention for league honours although they trail Mitre by four points.
