The top two players in the Carlsberg Olton Double Top League, Bob Nixon and Tony Randell have both completed 25 games and unbelievably there is nothing to separate them. In the latest round of fixtures Randell, who previously was just a point in front of Nixon, won 3-0 against Rhys Duncan and 2-1 against Pat Sinnett, but that dropped point cost him his lead as Nixon won both of his games against Jack Sidwell and Steve Sidwell, to give each player 67 points and level average.

There were no fewer than ten maximums this week from Steve Harding (2), Bob Nixon (2), Tony Randell, Phil Randell, Andy Hutchings, Simon Edwards, Wayne Matthews and Tom Kelly.

Thimbermill’s slender lead at the top of the Harborne and District Summer League has been reduced to just one leg of average after they beat Quinton Members Club 6-3, who were previously unbeaten, and second placed Smethwick Labour Club won 7-2 at home to Quinborne ’A’. Third in the table Hillyfields ’B’ have the same six points as the two teams above them and are only two legs of average behind leaders Thimbermill.

In their away game against Avenue Social Hillyfields ’A’ won 6-3, their first win in three.

The Sheldon and District Summer League have had a busy week with both their final fixtures of the season and the semi finals and final of their Mrs F. Richman Trophy.

In the league Bromford Members Club Exiles confirmed their group one title with a 6-2 win at Sheldon Dukes, Saltley Amateur Gardeners runners up beating Olton RBL 6-2 also.

Group two’s winners and runners up were, Iron Horse and Shirley RBL while in group three it was Redhill Tavern and RAFA. Kingshurst Labour Club looked all set to win group four but suffered a shock 5-3 home defeat at the hands of Sheldon Social, who prior to the game were bottom of the group, their win lifted them one place in the table above Shard End Social. As a result of Kingshursts defeat the 6-2 win at Shard End Social by George V gave them the title by one point over Kingshurst.

Highwood ’B’ were winners of group five, a massive six points advantage over their nearest rivals Willclare Sports and Social. That certainly was not the case in group six as the top two teams, winners Yardley Arms and runners up Custard House both finished on 16 points with Yardley having the superior average.

In the Mrs F. Richman Trophy Bromford Bridge Members Club Exiles beat Shard End Social 6-1 in the first semi final and Highwood ’A’ the second with a much closer 4-3 verdict over Shirley RBL. The final was another clear cut 6-1 win for Bromford Bridge. Matt Gallett (Bromford) was named the player of the final.
