The Sheldon and District Winter League have been engaged in the quarter finals of their League Cup. In the premier division Sheldon Dukes recorded the biggest win, a 7-2 home success over RAFA, something of a shock result for Shard End RBL who, currently third in the table lost 6-3 at home to fourth placed Olton RBL. In the other two premier ties Saltley Amateur Gardeners and Brook Meadow had 5-4 wins against respective opponents Shirley RBL and Mackadown Social. Hitting 180’s were D.Hesketh (Shirley RBL) and R.Lawrence (Brook Meadow).

Division one leaders Vaughans had a close 5-4 victory away to Small Heath Gardeners Flights, who are just one place off the foot of the table. Also winning 5-4 were Stechford Social and Shard End Social beating in turn Shard End RBL Vikings and Yardley Ex Colts. Yardley Ex Flights won their home game against Sheldon Social by 6-3 .

Despite a maximum from P.Wright, Millhouse lost their division two game against Willclare Sports and Social 6-3. Small Heath Amateur Gardeners were out-tonned by their opponents Shannons, but the all important 6-3 result went in favour of Small Heath. Joining them in the hat for the semi finals draw will be Highwood, who beat Glebe Community Association 5-4.

A couple of knockouts were staged over the Christmas period in our area, first the Wolverhampton Open which was hosted by the ECC Sports and Social Club. The event attracted numerous World Championship, PDC and County players from around the country.

The eventual winner, claiming the top prize of £500 was Leicestershire’s Jamie Caven. Caven was impressive throughout the competition, none more so than in the final where he defeated Merseyside’s Robbie Green, who collected £200 as runner up.

Losing semi finalists who each won £100 were Dave Honey (Redditch) and Tony Randell (Birmingham). Going out in the quarter finals were, Andy Smith (Studley), Pete Alsop (Derby), Tom Aldridge (Tipton) and Mark Hylton (Staffordshire), each of them receiving £25.

Tipton Sports and Social was the setting for another Christmas knockout and lifting the title on this occasion was Nick Fullwell who defeated Tony Randell in the final.

In both competitions Tony Randell was in fine form beating Tipton’s Ian Jones in both of them.
