After completing nine fixtures in group one of the Sheldon and District Summer League Mackadown Sports and Social recorded their first win of the campaign and what a win it was. A 7-2 win at Bartley Green F.C. has seen Smethwick Labour Club, reigning division one champions in both the summer and winter Harborne and District League’s, go to the top of the summer league on 12 points from seven games. Second placed Pheasant lost ground as they went down 5-4 at Midland Red and although they are on the same 12 points have played one game more than the leaders, as a result of their vital win Midland Red have moved into third place on 8 points from only six games. This week’s column is ending on a sad note and is a sure sign of the times. The Bedworth Gateway Open has been for many, many years one of the major competitions not only in the Midlands but throughout the country with entries coming from all corners of the country. Unfortunately I have received confirmation from organiser Deric Wells that due to the lack of entries the competition will not be run this year. Teams who have already sent in entries will have their fees refunded.
Let’s hope this is just a minor blip and that the competition will return to its former glory again next year.
