Warwickshire rounded off their 2005-2006 campaign in the premier division of the Kaliber BDO Inter Counties Championships with their biggest and possibly most crucial victory of the season. With only one win in eight previous games, relegation was becoming a distinct reality. However, the last match was a home tie against fellow strugglers Cheshire, a win was a must for both sides.
The weekend began well for the local county when the ladies ’B’ kicked off with a 5-1 win, Betty Sinnett (16.84) taking the match award. The men’s ’B’ continued the run with an 8-4 success, their first win since December, Noel Grant (28.36) their top man. Sunday’s games saw the ladies once more chalk up a 5-1 victory needless to say Trina Gulliver (25.47) won the lady of the match award, her fifth consecutive award and sixth out of nine for the season. The ladies win ensured at least a share of the spoils but the 9-3 win by the men’s ’A’ guaranteed the overall 27-9 victory plus their place in the premier division next season. Top player for the ‘A’ side was Tony Brown (30.06).
Warwickshire finished the campaign with 163 points, 22 more than both the bottom two teams Cheshire and Lincolnshire. Well done to all the players and officials.
