Saltley Amateur Gardeners were this week’s biggest winners in the premier division of the Sheldon and District Winter League. Playing at home the Gardeners chalked up a massive 8-1 victory over RAFA. Highwood were not far behind with a 7-1 home win against Castle Vale Residents, despite a 140 finish from D.Cooney for Castle Vale. P.Burnham (Fordbridge Social) had a 160 break, but he also finished on the losing side, going down 5-4 at St Anne’s.

In division one there were 7-2 wins for both Glebe Community Centre and Solihull Borough FC against respective opponents Raven and Smiths Wood Snooker Club. There was a maximum for J.Toney as his side Sheldon Social beat Vaughans 6-3.

Shard End RBL Flights romped to an 8-1 win over Small Heath Gardeners, in division two, while Old Bill and Bull and Victoria Flights won 7-2 in turn against Shard End RBL and the Gunmakers Arms.

Heartlands have opened up a four points lead at the top of the Small Heath Summer League following their 7-2 beating of Ward End Ex Service Club and a defeat for second placed Custard House, who lost ground as they slipped up at the Victoria 301 Club, going down 5-4 as a result of their success Victoria 301 Club are now level on the same sixteen points as Custard House and only trail on average.

Bill Morris, secretary of the highly popular Aston League is about to set off on a new venture. Bill is working hard starting a new Birmingham Sunday Morning League. Teams would consist of five players, each playing the best of three legs of 501.

The West Midlands Super League got underway with fine wins for both Penkridge and Wednesfield in the men’s league. Both teams won by 7-2 margins, Penkridge defeated Blakenhall, while Wednesfield, whose team is made up mainly of West Midlands county players, accounted for Oldbury.

In the women’s league Wolverhampton, who at one stage were trailing 2-1 finished as 3-2 victors, thanks to their opponents, Great Wyrley only fielding three players.

A final reminder that entries are still being accepted for the Coventry Open, which will be staged at the Barras Social Club, Coventry Street, Coventry, this coming Saturday. For a £4 entry fee there is a guaranteed first prize of £250 with entries being accepted on the day.
