In the premier division of the Harborne and District Winter League there was a shock defeat for Midland Red as they went down 6-3 against a determined Raven outfit 6-3. The local derby in division two between the two Hillyfields teams resulted in a 6-3 victory for the ‘B’ team whose D.Cornwell had a 160 break. In the same division Bartley Green Social Flights proved to be too strong for Quinborne despite a 180 by M.Harvey for the losers.

Leaders of division three, Highlander, were also involved in a local derby as they took on their ladies team. The 9-0 result went in favour of the former and slightly increased their lead at the top of the table as second placed Avenue Social won 6-3 at home to Travellers Rest.

With one week to go in the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League, Selly Park have already won the title. A 14-7 win over Sheldon gave Selly Park a total of 171 points and although they have a bye in the last round of fixtures, they are a massive 40 points clear of their nearest rivals Acocks Green. Acocks Green should hold on to the runners spot as they face bottom of the table Sutton in their final game and third placed Northfield, who are a further seven points adrift on 124 play Sheldon. In this week’s games Northfield beat Sutton 16-5.

Coventry Howitzers were top scorers in the Warwickshire Men’s Super League as they stormed to a crushing 8-0 win as they entertained Kingstanding. Birmingham Vauxhall were close behind with a 7-1 success in their home tie with Kettlebrook Tamworth.

In the other fixtures Birmingham Midland Red won 5-3 at home to Coventry Bishopsgate, Coventry Potters Green, also at home, won 6-2 against Rugby and the match between Tamworth and Bedworth Bank’s finished all square at four each.

Alan Grainger lost ground in the race for the Bass Breweries and Bristan Ltd sponsored Minworth Social Individual League title as he went down 3-0 to Colin Farrington, Grainger dropping from second to fourth in the table. Alan Mayell continues to impress in pole position, his latest game producing a 2-1 win over Mark Elkin, to give him a total of 88 points. Paul Burnham, despite hitting a maximum and losing 2-1 to Mark Elkin came fighting back with 3-0 wins over Harry Chambers and Glen Clarke to move him nicely into second spot on 78 points.

There were 180’s for Colin Farrington as he beat Chris Packer 3-0, Winnie Chinn who won 2-1 against third placed Tony Pedley and Tony Whitehouse who beat Andy Stokes 2-1. Nigel Groves was another player to hit the three treble twenty’s, however, he finished on the wrong side of a 3-0 scoreline against Chris Packer.

The Irish Centre, Digbeth, travelled to the south west to Bristol where they took on the local Air Balloon Tavern in the quarter finals of the Bedworth Open Ladies Competition. The team consisting of Lesley Newcombe, Joyce Webster, Sylvia Kimberlee, Vicky Byrne, Carole Fisher, Linda Butler and Beattie Powell were taken the full distance by the home team. Nevertheless Beattie Powell, on at number seven, took on J.Tughill and despite being taken to the third and deciding leg Beattie won and booked her teams passage into the grand finals which will be staged on February 26.

In the Forest of Arden Winter League Stechford Social after two consecutive defeats bounced back with a 6-3 win at Hobs Meadow Mixes, Mark Osborne hitting a 180 for the home team. Leaders Red Arrows kept up their winning ways with a 7-2 success at the expense of the Cocks and Hens. Second placed Hobs Meadow stayed on course with a 7-2 victory at the Mackadown Social.
