The Bell suffered their first defeat of the season in division one of the Harborne 401 Summer League when they went down 5-4 playing at the Bartley Green Social Club. As the scoreline suggests it was a very close match with Bartley’s M.Smith recording a 160 break. Red Lion hit top form winning their fixture at Hobsons Choice by 8-1, J.Meredith helping them on their way with a 180. Stonehouse Stars kept up their run with a convincing 7-2 success at the Old Crown.

In division two Greenlands maintained their unbeaten run in style, chalking up an 8-1 win at home to the Green Man. The local derby between Village Stump and Golden Cup resulted in a 6-3 victory for the former, Bugle Horn turned on a powerhouse display against Highlander Ladies running out 9-0 winners with A.Rowley snr and C.Jarvis both notching maximums.

In the Small Heath Summer League Saltley Gardeners gained an impressive 7-2 win over Sheldon Flights. J.Pears was in superb form for the winners hitting a maximum and also recording an eight darts game. Pears team mate T.White was another player to get himself on the honours list as he broke with 160.

Top scorers of the week were B.C.A. who defeated red Hill by 8-1. D.Stanley (Gables) produced a 131 outshot as his team beat Hay Mills 6-3. Custard Bar had a close 5-4 win in their encounter with McDwyers.

A 5-4 victory over Harvester has guaranteed Hobs Meadow Mixes the Shadow League title in the Forst of Arden Winter League. With one fixture remaining Mixes are two points ahead of their nearest rivals Sheldon Ivy Leaf and no matter what the outcome of the final results they cannot be overtaken.

Red Arrows, who had a bye, have already won the league championship. Last season’s champions, Hobs Meadow, had a 6-3 win over what must be said a very unlucky Heart of England outfit. But nevertheless it was enough to give Hobs the runners up spot.

The Bishopgate Club, Coventry was the setting for the Warwickshire ladies Gold Cup singles and doubles play off’s. The singles title went to Sue Deery who put on a superb display to defeat Lesley Newcombe in the final. Newcombe in the semis took out the pre match favourite and World No1 Trina Gulliver.

Lesley Newcombe had some consolation for her singles final defeat, when with her partner Carol Weston she beat Debbie McPherson and Mo Redmond in the final of the doubles competition.

There’s no change at the top of the Birmingham Ladies Double Top League. Reigning champion and current leader Joyce Webster chalked up another couple of straight 3-0 wins in her games against Marion Walker and Maureen Bostock. Of the chasing pack Janet Dudley beat Marie Glasgow 2-1 and then went on to win 3-0 against Mo Doherty. Jeanette James went down 2-1 to Marion Walker but then recovered to defeat Phyliss Larden 3-0.

Vicky Edwards is stringing together a good run of results, the latest two 3-0 wins over Phyliss Larden and Kay Chambers have done nothing to harm her cause.
