In the premier division of the Harborne and District Winter League, leaders Wernley maintained their winning ways with a 6-3 success at Hobsons Choice. Midland Red won by a similar margin at the expense of the Red Lion.

Division One champions Bartley Green Social Club proved too good for the Beeches, running out 6-3 winners, while the plough made short work of the Brook as they beat them 8-1. Stonehouse may have won the division two title but they still went down 5-4 to their bogey team Village Stump. Travellers Rest were also 5-4 victors in their fixture against Raven Ladies.

Highlight of the Sheldon and District Winter League this week was the superb maximum finish by R.Dingley. Playing in division two for Lyndon Arrows, Dingley chalked up his 170 checkout in the home tie with Silver Wings. His team however lost 6-3. In the same division R.Dale (Great Western) helped his team to a 5-4 win over Kierans with a 160 break. A.Mayell was another player to record a 160 break in his premier division game for the Bradford Arms who defeated Stechford Social 6-3.

Tyseley WMC strengthened their number one spot in the Acocks Green Winter League with a convincing 8-1 victory at home to the Plume of Feathers. Journeys End went one better in their home game with Britannia Arrows handing out a 9-0 whitewash.

Both of the semi finals of the league cup went to the wire. In the match at Shirley Legion Derek Duggan was the hero as his last gasp win gave his team, Brewers Arms a 5-4 verdict over the Robin Hood. Malcolm Tysall was the toast of the Shirley Legion team as he also won the decider against Journeys End at Tyseley Staff.

With only one fixture remaining in the Warwickshire Mens Super League Coventry Howitzers are already confirmed as champions. Their latest 5-3 win over Tamworth gives them a total of 160 points, sixteen more than their nearest rivals Bedworth Bank’s, who were also winners in their most recent match against Kettlebrook Tamworth. Biggest surprise was surely the 5-3 victory by bottom of the table Midland Red Harborne over Coventry Bishopsgate. Nevertheless, Harborne remain rooted at the foot of the table on 56 points, five adrift of Coventry Potters Green who finished all square at four each with Rugby.

Maureen Doherty was in fine form in the latest round of games in the Birmingham Ladies Double Top League, beating Kay Chambers 3-0 and Sheila Smith 2-1 to give her three wins in four matches. Julie James is also in very impressive form adding two 3-0 victories over Phyliss Larden and Margaret Bostock to her previous similar win against Maureen Doherty. Julie’s only defeat was at the hands of Marion Walker.

It was not good news for the local counties in the BDO Inter Counties Championship. Warwickshire, playing at the Belgrave Sports and Social Club against Lancashire lost both men’s games 9-3, Kevin Dowling taking the ‘A’ team’s award with a great 31.31 average, while seasoned campaigner Mangal Singh was the ‘B’ sides top man with 27.97.

There were mixed fortunes for the ladies. The ‘A’ bounced back from their previous 5-1 thrashing at Cambridge to reverse that scoreline against Lancashire.For the fourth consecutive match and the fifth time in eight outings Trina Gulliver was the lady of the match with a scorching 27. 01 average. The ‘B’ side also improved from their similar 5-1 defeat at Cambridge, forcing a 3-3 draw after trailing 2-0. Sue Deery with a 21.17 average took the match award.

Meanwhile in division two West Midlands travelled north to take on Humberside, hoping to return to winning ways after three consecutive defeats. It was not to be. However, they did earn a draw which was a step in the right direction. Diane Tolley (20.31) helped the ‘A’ team to a 4-2 victory and Lynne Reynolds was the ‘B’ team’s top player with 20.13, in a 3-3 draw.

The men’s ‘B’ lost for only the second time this season, going down 7-5. The ‘A’ finished all square at six each, putting the final score at 18-18. Award winners were, for the ‘A’ Gary Taylor (28.72) and for the ‘B’ Adrian Hammersley (22.52).

The Belgrave Sports and Social Club, Tamworth, was the setting for the Warwickshire County play off for the Men’s Embassy Gold Cup Singles. A total of 51 players turned out for the event but it was Andy Smith (Coventry Howitzers) who was triumphant with a final 3-1 victory over team mate Steve Hine.
