After their 28-11 defeat away to Kent in the BDO Inter Counties Championship, Warwickshire will be looking for a quick return to winning ways when next weekend, in the latest of their premier division fixtures they travel again, this time to the Paddocks Community Centre, Canvey Island where they will take on Essex.

The Acocks Green Summer League rounded off their season with the final of their Knockout Cup at the Tyseley Staff. It produced a fascinating, nail biting encounter between the Shirley Legion and Tyseley WMC with the result hinging on the very last leg of the last game.
Tyseley, through Amur Parvez, Paul Griffiths, Ronnie Walton and Tommy Kelly stormed into a 4-1 lead, Steve Dunleavy offering Shirley’s only resistance. Craig Johnson reduced the arrears with a 2-0 win over Arthur Bird and the last three games, which all went the three legs distance were won by Shirley’s Dave Hesketh, Chris Rogers and Malcolm Tysell at the expense of John Quigley, Dennis Stokes and Steve Parry to give the Legion a memorable 5-4 victory.

Shirley Legion also got the Acocks Green Winter league off to a good start with a 6-3 success against Brewers Arms. League newcomers Moonraker went down 6-3 at the Tyseley WMC, while Journeys End won their home tie with Tyseley Staff 5-4.

With the help of a 160 break from J.Cannon, Wernley defeated Cricketers 5-4 in the premier division of the Harborne and District Winter league, by doing so they also maintained their 100% win record.The Bell hammered Hillyfields ‘B’ 8-1, G.Stamps hitting a maximum in the process.
In division one Bartley Green Social Club remain undefeated after beating Avenue Social 7-2, the same margin by which the Plough won against Bartley Green Social Flights. T.Knight (Hillyfields’A’) hit a 180 as his team finished 5-4 winners over the Brook.
A 6-3 win over Highlander keeps Stonehouse on their unbeaten run in division two. For Quinborne S.Scandrett produced a great 151 checkout and S.Talboys a maximum score of 180. Nevertheless their team were still unable to avoid a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Village Stump outfit.

Notable individual performances in the first round of the Sheldon and District Winter League Punch Bowl came from New Inners M.Brayne and Heathway’s B.Bath who both recorded 160 breaks. Unfotunately their teams went out of the event to respective opponents Shard End RBL and Lea Hall Mixed.
Joining the two winning teams in the hat for the next round will be Old Bill and Bull, Chelmsley Wood RBL, Stechford Social, Bradford Arms, Lea Hall RBL, Dovecote, Olton RBL and British telecom Club.

There were good 7-1 wins for Coventry Bishopgate and Bedworth Banks over, in turn, Midland Red Harborne and Kettlebrook Tamworth in the Warwickshire Men’s Super League. However there was a bit of a setback for leaders Coventry Howitzers as they went down 5-3 at Tamworth. Minworth also won by 5-3 in their home game with Birmingham Old Wharf, while the matches between Rugby and Coventry Potters Green and Birmingham Midland Red and Warwick Town both finished all square at four each.

Three fixtures were completed in the Warwickshire Ladies Super League, Northfield and Coventry Spencer both chalking up convincing 6-1 results against respective opponents Leamington Sydenham and Birmingham East. In the other match Leamington Sureway won 5-2 at home to Midland Amusements.

There was a top of the table clash in the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League when leaders Selly Park took on second placed Northfield. Selly Park powered their way into a 10-0 lead before their opponents made the scoreline a little more respectable, finishing at 15-6. Third placed Sheldon stretched their advantage over their nearest rivals, Handsworth, to six points by beating them 13-8. Ward End remain at the foot of the table after losing 11-10 to Perry Barr, who are just above them.

Red Arrows consolidated their number one spot in the Forest of Arden Winter league with a convincing 9-0 whitewash of the Harvester. On form for the league leaders was B.Twist who as well as hitting 2×100 also notched a maximum. A.Grainger (Hunters Moon) was another player to hit three treble twenties as his team gained a close 5-4 verdict over Sheldon Ivy Leaf. Highwood were another team to win by the odd game, a somewhat surprising success against the Cornerstones.
