Buckinghamshire v Shropshire

With five defeats in the five games played this season in division four of the BDO Inter County Championships things unbelievably got worse for Shropshire in their sixth fixture away to Buckinghamshire.

The ladies ‘B’ began the weekend and suffered their biggest defeat of the campaign, a 6-0 whitewash, setting the hosts on their way to the win was Barbara Legge who won 3-1 against Allison Gallagher. A further two 3-1 results for the home team were supplied by Jane Sobey and Karen Leather at the expense of Sue Lane and Debbie Davies.

The game was put beyond Shropshire’s reach as early as the fourth encounter as Gerry Johnson added her 3-2 win over Lisa Wills to their account. Anita Daly-Warwick made it 5-0 with a 3-0 victory over Cheryl Owen and rounding off the 6-0 win for the home side was Lorraine Hodges who beat Sharon Harris 3-1.

There was a bright start for the men’s ‘B’ side as Peter Eley won the opener against Paul Stefanovic 3-1, then doubling the lead was man of the match Neil Powell who had a similar 3-1 win over Craig Cox, Powell taking the match award for his 24.02 average.

Parity was quickly restored as Jamie Major (Buckinghamshire) won 3-0 against Colin Hill and Major’s team mate Kevin Locke beat Rob Trumper 3-1.

Shropshire forged ahead again in the fifth when Neville Quinton added his 3-1 win over Alan Syphas to their tally and opening up a two games lead for a second time was Martin Riggs who defeated Stephen Reed 3-2.

As the second half of the match got underway once again the lead was cancelled out as first Henry Reddin won 3-2 against Paul Bromley after Bromley had taken a 2-1 lead and Lee Rose won 3-0 against Rob Harris.

For a third time Shropshire went ahead, this time thanks to a 3-2 win from Darryl Sheldon over Blaine Jelly, Sheldon coming back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 and put the away side 5-4 up.

Ron Grant (Buckinghamshire) made it 5-5 when he won 3-1 against Andy Gilbert only to see Andy Mullinder (Shropshire) fight back from 2-0 down against Stuart Robinson to win 3-2 to leave the result hinging on the final game of the day between Jack Vincent (Buckinghamshire) and Joe Cook.

Vincent won the first leg only to see Cook take the next two, but with wins in the last two legs it was Vincent who got the 3-2 verdict and earn his team a share of the 6-6 result.

The ladies ‘A’ match appeared as though it was going to go the same way as the ‘B’ encounter when Felicia Bray, Sarah Louise Mallott and Janet Weedon in turn defeated Kat McLean (3-1), Julie Griffiths (3-0) and Sophie Fawcett (3-1) but the rot was stopped in the fourth when Stephanie Clarke followed up scores of 121 and 100 with a 103 checkout in the opening leg against Kirsty Gibbs and then went on to win 3-0 and take the lady of the match award for her 18.79 average.

Marie Riggs kept Shropshire’s hopes alive when in the penultimate game after twice having her lead cancelled out by Kate Drake she went on to win 3-2.

Unfortunately for Shropshire and their Michele Pritchard Buckinghamshire on the day had kept their best till last as Fallon Sherrock won 3-0 against Pritchard, take her team’s match award for her 21.17 average and give her team the 4-2 result.

It was not the best of weekends for the men’s ‘A’ team as they had lost the game before they registered their first winner, the opening eight games all going to Buckinghamshire.

Kicking off the rout was John Woodbridge who beat Danny James 4-1 then came wins from Michael Burgoine, Mark Boardman, Mat Caste, Sean Rose, Samuel Ridgway, Damien Fyffe and Tim Martin who accounted for their counterparts Jamie Barrowman (4-2), Chris Fox (4-0), Richard Parker (4-3), Nathan Storar (4-1), Brian Hickman (4-2), Scott Meyrick (4-0) and Simon Pritchard (4-1).

Andi Chatter at number nine was Shropshire’s first winner he went 3-0 up against Andy Brown, lost the next two legs but won the sixth for a 4-2 victory. Following Andi was Derek Coulson who not only had a 4-1 win against Steve McLeod but also took the match award for his 27.33 average. Alas that is where the good news ended as the last two games of the weekend finished 4-1 with Clive Wilford and Adam Mould beating respective opponents Adam Thackray and Kevin Harris to give Buckinghamshire men’s ‘A’ team a 10-2 win and put the overall result at 26-10 also in the home team’s favour.

The result leaves Shropshire still lying next to bottom of the table with a ten point’s advantage over bottom team Isle of Wight but the gap between them and Middlesex the next team above them has now widened to 23 points.
