The Christmas and New Year period is always a time of league and open knockouts and the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017 was no exception.
In what is becoming an annual event the South Birmingham League took on the Forest of Arden League in a charity game to raise money to buy Christmas presents for the children in the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
As ever it turned out to be a huge success but it was greatly aided this year by sponsorship of Jamie Carter of Vapour Trail who also added a further £100 to the coffers, in addition Trade Counter Butchers, Chelmsley Wood donated a £25 meat voucher to raffle off on the night.
The final score was an 8-4 win for South Birmingham but as is always the case in these charity events it’s the charity that‘s the biggest winner and from the night the Birmingham Children’s Hospital will benefit to the tune of a massive £651.

The Sheldon Marlborough Cricket Club Singles League staged their Christmas Knockout and in the last four games there was a straight 2-0 win for Paul Brown over Mark O’Donnell while from the other half of the draw another Paul, this time Sunner accounted for Dave Humphries with a closer 2-1 verdict.
The final also went the full three legs distance with Brown just getting the edge.

On the league front final honours went to Dave Howlett (Premiership Winner), Alan Wale (Championship Winner) and Kevin Salsbury (Division One Winner). The divisional knockout winners were Paul Sunner (Premiership), Alan Wale (Championship) and Dave Brown (Division One) with Paul Sunner also winning the 501 knockout.

The Royal, Albrighton staged their Christmas Knockout and taking the top prize of £140 was Newport man Dave Pallett who in a very closely fought final was taken the full eleven legs distance by Andy Roberts from Oakengates before sealing the title with a 6-5 result.

In the semi finals Pallett had a 5-2 win against Dave Bayton while Roberts had a more convincing 5-0 success against Steve Groucott.
As runner up Roberts received £70 and there was £20 for each of the losing semi finalists.
In the first round losers Plate Knockout it was Will Robert (Oakengates) with a 4-2 scoreline against Codsall’s Simon Pritchard that won the event and the £20 that went with it, Pritchard collecting £10.

The Ripley Elite Darts Singles League staged their seventh 7th Christmas Open at their Somercotes home venue and with 72 entries it turned out to undoubtedly be the toughest line up the event had ever witnessed.
The line up included PDC world championship player Jamie Caven, former PDC top ten man Colin Osbourne, PDC current tour card holders and past tour card holders, BDO top ten player Brian Dawson together with a few of his Yorkshire ‘A’ team players, an array of other county players and many very good local players as well as reigning champion Gary Fenn who made his exit in the last sixteen when Ian Richardson beat him 4-2.
In the end Arnold’s former PDC tour card holder Mark Dewsberry took the £400 first prize when he defeated PDC current tour card holder and event organiser Darron Brown 5-0 in what turned out to be a somewhat one sided final, Brown collected £200 as runner up.
Local favourite Aden Kirk who just finished third in this year’s development tour lost 4-2 in the semi finals to Dewsberry while Brown took out Daz Johnson with a similar 4-2 result, each of the losing semi finalists picking up £100 and there was £25 for Matt Padgett, Ian Richardson, Paul Redfearn and Dave Copley for reaching the quarter finals.
Organisers extend a massive thank you to each and every player who turned up to make the event a resounding success and creating a terrific atmosphere throughout, also thanks go to Stephen Heenan the club manager for his continued support and last but by no means least arguably the best tournament director around Miss Dawn Buckley thank you for another faultless display.

The Ashwood, Wordsley was another pub to run a Christmas Knockout and taking the top prize was Chris Williams with a narrow 3-2 win over West Midlands star Nick Fullwell in the final, both players had straight 2-0 wins in the semis Williams beating Reece Colley and Fullwell winning against Jamie Rollinson.

On the local league front the South Birmingham League staged their Mixed Doubles knockout which attracted an encouraging 24 entries. The final went the full three legs distance with Mohammed Anwar and Zakia Awan just getting the 2-1 verdict over Luis Barberan and Charlie Kingdon.

Both of the last four games finished 2-0 with Anwar and Awan beating Lynn Coulson and Gavin Jones while Barberan and Kingdon accounted for Diane Hudson and Mark Allen.
There was one late league result from division two in which The Bell beat The Gate 5-4.

The Forest of Arden Winter League were also involved in their Mixed Doubles competition in which mother and daughter Sue and Charlie Kingdon both reached the semi finals. Sue with partner Simon Edwards won their last four game 2-1 against Phil Carter and Laura Vann while Charlie who was teamed up with Luis Barberan won by the same margin against Courtney Burns and Tim Jones.
The Kingdon final saw Sue and Simon clinch the title with yet another 2-1 verdict with Charlie and Luis finishing as runners up.

It was the singles knockout that was on the agenda for the Small Heath League and the final turned out to be an all East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association affair between Terry Webster and Colin Wyatt.
Taking the title with scores of 140,123,5×100 and 2×120 breaks plus an eight darts game was Terry Webster, Wyatt’s reply was 140,132,2×100 and a 100 break.
Losing semi finalists were Ashley Lattimer (Cob’s Bar) and Dave Heighway (Gulp Tribe).
The semi finals of the league’s doubles knockout both finished with close 2-1 scorelines as G.McCormack and M.Cain beat J.Frost and S.Cain and T.White and L.Robinson won against P.Webster and C.Wyatt.
The final was a straight 2-0 win for White and Robinson with McCormack and Cain runners up.

The singles title for the Camp Hill League went to Hay Mills Social Club representative Simon Edwards who defeated team mate Pete Yardley in the final.
John Taylor, another Hay Mills Social Club player went out in the last four play offs together with Neil Parsonage from Cotterills Lane Club.

The Wolverhampton Tuesday Night League have been rounding off their season with numerous finals the first of which was the Riley’s 4 A-Side Cup. In the division one contest it was the quartet of Phil Mayo, Simon Pritchard, Steve Ritchie and Matt Smart from Riley’s ‘C’ who lifted the title with a final 4-2 result over the Roebuck side of Allan Davies, Jamie Daly, Tom Fletcher and Lee Jordan.
The division two final was also 4-2 the title going to Phil Thomas, Paul Jackson, Dan Elcock and Dave Lewis representing Lanesfield RBL after defeating Sophie Fawcett, Eddie Gripton, Russ Smith and Jack Duck.
In the 3-A-Side final the 3-1 result went to the Gilberts Bar trio of Reece Cook-Lucas, Pete Taylor and Justin Evans with Shane Yeomans, Cy Warrilow and Mark Lowbridge (Victoria) runners up, while in the 21 and Under competition Gilberts Bar provided no fewer than three of the last four players, in the semi finals Justin Evans got the better of team mate Mark Lloyd, while Reece Cook-Lucas, the other Gilberts player took out Ryan Bourne (Wednesfield FC).
In the final Justin Evans continued in the superb form he had shown throughout the knockout and ran out the 3-0 winner against his fellow Gilberts Bar team mate Reece Cook-Lucas.
The Averages Knockout final for division one saw Jimmy Handley (Riley’s ‘D’) taken to a deciding leg by Steve Jones from Wednesfield Conservative Club before sealing his 3-2 victory.
Going out in the last four were Mark Lowbridge (Victoria) and Justin Evans (Gilberts Bar).
The division two play-off was another win for Riley’s as ‘A’ team player Paul Boddison beat Andy Busby (Dog and Partridge) 3-0.
Matt Evans (Woodfield Social Club) and Harry Small (Sunbeam) both made their exits in the semi finals.

The West Midlands Men’s Super League staged their singles and doubles finals at their home venue Gilberts Bar, Willenhall. From a field of 79 players Scott Baker (Allens Sports Bar ‘A’ ) retained his singles title beating up and coming player Matthew Moore (Crown ‘B’) 4-1 in a high quality final. Losing semi finalists were Ash Khayat (ECC) and Reece Colley (Pensnett Welfare Club).
The doubles title went to Robert Smith and Jason Lowe (Crown ‘A’) who won 4-2 in the final against Matthew Dennant and Gary Watts from Landywood ‘A’ who were attempting to make it three wins in a row but failed at the last hurdle.
Going out in the semi’s were Paul Wells and Mathew Tedstone (Crown ‘A’) and Matthew Coleman and Greg Parkes.

The Tettenhall Wednesday Night League played off three of their cup finals. Louis Burley beat Tony Durnall in the singles final while the doubles title went to Paul Bromley and Mark Bromley with Wayne Horton and Adam Cullum runners up.
In the Knockout Cup final Riley’s ‘B’ won against Moreton with the Consoaltion Cup title going to league champions Whitmore Reans WMC after they defeated Brewood British Legion in the final.
