Both men’s teams saw their opponents win 7-5, the ‘B’ team actually opened up a 2-0 lead when Keith Cooper beat Stephen Bonnett 3-2 and Jim Beardmore won 3-1 against Brian Mandale and although they lost the next four games the score was brought back to level terms in the eighth when Tim Daniels with no fewer than eight scores of a ton or more beat Brian Fawcett in three straight legs and earn himself the match award with a 25.91 average, and Anthony Pace beat Will Rowley by the same 3-0 margin.

The home team forged ahead again in the ninth when Simon Pattinson won 3-2 against Steven Thompson after Thompson had gone 2-1 up and although Colin Rich levelled the game for a third time when he won 3-2 against Cumbria’s Michael Wilson it was the hosts Wayne Smith and Gavin Taylor who won the last two games against Ian Allcock (3-1) and Wayne Howe (3-2).

The men’s ‘A’ game saw Cumbria storm into a 3-0 lead and 4-2 by the midway point with Gary Feen (27.14) and Tim Daniels (25.72) their only winners but like the ‘B’ team’s game by the eighth it was all level as Rob Wood and Richard Palmer added the wins over Alan Armstrong and Andrew Foster.

Richard Hanson (Derbyshire) came from one down to lead his opponent Andy Goodfellow 2-1 and then went 3-2 up in the fifth only to see Goodfellow win the last two legs for a 4-3 victory.

The final game of the fixture produced a 4-2 win for John Murray (Cumbria) against David Allcock to take the weekend’s overall result to 24-12 to Cumbria and push Derbyshire to the bottom of the table. Although it’s still early days Derbyshire do need to regain their form of the 2014-2015 promotion season and get some more points on the board as quickly as possible to lift them away from the relegation zone, but their third game is another away game and against high riding Surrey who after two games are second in the table.

December

Surrey v Derbyshire

Derbyshire’s woe continues, after losing all nine of their division one fixtures in the BDO Inter County Championships last season they have begun life back in division two with three defeats in their opening three games the latest being away to Surrey, having said that Surrey are riding high and at present enjoying a lofty second position in the promotion table and so not too much can be read into the result.

The ladies ‘B’ got off on the right foot when Michelle Cunningham gave them the early break as she beat Marie Barthrop 3-0. Lauren Tomkins (Surrey) had a 3-1 success against Louise Rawson to level the score before the home team took the lead for the first time when Tania Blake won 3-0 against Kerri Buckly.

Jennifer McCormick restored parity when she accounted for Penny Hollis with a 3-2 scoreline, Jennifer taking Derbyshire’s match award for her 17.77 average.

Kera Astle assured her team mates of at least a share of the spoils when she won 3-0 against Sarah Emsley, but a further 3-0 result, again in favour of the visitors when Terri Bellamy beat Billie Auzins gave Derbyshire ladies ‘B’ their first win of the season, 4-2.

Andrew Gillott (Derbyshire) put up a brave fight against namesake Andrew Foster but the difference between the two players was finishing doubles and it was Foster who got the 3-2 win. Daryl Reino doubled the hosts score with a straight 3-0 success over Wayne Howe and with 3-1 and 3-0 wins in turn from Tyler Radlett and Douglas Harwood over Anthony Pearce and David Fritchley the home team had stormed into a 4-0 lead.

It took a man of the match award winning 3-0 victory from Sean Lambert to stem the tide, Lambert beating Paul Tudor in 20,18 and 19 darts for a 26.37 average. Alas that was to be Derbyshire’s only win in the opening eight games as Peter Arnold won 3-1 against Ian Scobbie, Darren Bryant won by the same margin against Lee Stanley and a 3-2 success from Phil McDonnell over Ian Allcock took Surrey into a match winning 7-1 lead.

With the game lost Derbyshire had their best run three in a row started by Colin Rich when he came from one down against Dave Mann to win 3-1 then Derbyshire’s long serving player Jim Beardmore beat Connor Scutt 3-0 and to round off the trio of wins was Andrew Baker with his 3-0 victory over Neville Wright.

The final game went to Surrey when Kurtis Atkins beat Steven Thompson 3-0 to give the hosts an 8-4 win.

It was not a good weekend for the ladies ‘A’ as the home side handed them a 6-0 whitewash all started by Kerry Killick who won 3-1 against Jackie Sweet after Jackie had won the first leg. Laura Turner made it 2-0 with a 3-1 win over Lauren Jackson and although Rachel Ayres (Derbyshire) took her opponent Tricia Wright to a deciding leg it was Wright who won it for a 3-2 success.

Derbyshire’s Alison Shilton went one up against Apylee Jones but with defeats in the next three legs went down 3-1 and the home team were home and dry as they now had a winning 4-0 advantage. Taking the score to 5-0 was Lisa Hunt with her 3-1 win over Samantha Marshall then in the final game Dee Fenn looked all set to chalk up a win for Derbyshire when she went two up against Sharon Godbeer but Dee was unable to consolidate her lead and eventually lost 3-2.

As in the men’s ‘B’ match it was the hosts who settled down and won the early games, Gary Creamer beating Ashley Spencer 4-2 in the opener and Darryl Pilgrim winning the second 4-1 against Nigel Daniels. Steven Soar recorded what was to be Derbyshire’s only win in the first half, he set off against Tony Hammond with a roar racing  to a 3-0 lead and despite Hammond winning the next three legs it was Soar who got the 4-3 result.

Surrey then added wins from Dave Parletti, who beat Richard Hanson 4-1, Graham Hollis who won 4-3 against Keith Cooper and Aaron Turner’s 4-1 win against Darran Sinfield to put them 5-1 up.

Jason Kelly made it 6-1 when he won the first game of the second half against Peter Slater 4-0 before Derbyshire’s best on the day Gary Fenn won 4-2 against Andy Bridgman. Fenn lost the first leg in18 darts but then levelled in the same 18 darts, then with 120 and 126 finishes went 3-1 up and although he lost the fifth in 21 darts won the game with a 17 darts leg and also the man of the match award for his 27.61 average.

After the pause for Fenn’s win Surrey then continued their onslaught, Gary Trodd beat Rob Wood 4-1, Dave Webb won 4-3 against Alan Statham and Stephen Lovett beat Adrian Asprey 4-0 to take the hosts lead to 9-2.

The match finished on a high for Derbyshire as Tim Daniels produced some top form taking the first leg against Alan Casey in 16 darts. Casey’s reply was immediate as he won the next two legs in 17 and 13 darts but back came Daniels with a 21 darts equaliser. Casey won the fifth in 19 darts but again Daniels was not going to give up the fight and took the game to a decider in 21 darts.

The final leg saw top shots of 2×100 for Casey but a 140 and a 180 gave Daniels all the space he needed as he won the leg in 17 darts and the tie 4-3 to give a final score of 9-3 to Surrey together with the overall 25-11 result.

Life doesn’t get any easier for Derbyshire as in their next fixture they will face top of the table Northamptonshire and although it’s a home fixture when your luck is out not even that helps, but fortunes change and let’s hope this will  be the fixture where it does and Derbyshire can get their first win of the season.
