Wolverhampton’s £3000 Pot Open

Registration will open shortly for the £3000 prize pot Winmau BDO Open in Wolverhampton, staged this year on Saturday, August 22nd.

In its third year, the Wolverhampton Open is now an established event that could soon be blessed with ranking status, raising its profile and extending the handful of pros to a bus load.

Organisers, Wolverhampton Sports Arena and sponsors Winmau say they will still retain the event’s attraction for amateurs, which means the title could go to anyone who wants to have a go.

The Winmau Darts Centre in Wolverhampton has been crowned Britain’s leading regional venue after launching all-week, low-cost competitions – with every penny from fees being ploughed back in prizes.

In just a couple of years with many local pubs closing, demand for darts in the West Midlands has outgrown supply of venues and the Winmau centre is now satisfying that demand with competitions or leagues six nights a week. Saturday will soon figure, with a further competition planned.

With backing now from Winmau sister company Red Dragon, the centre is also attracting a growing number of international competitions attended by players from all over Europe.  “We have a winning formula that involves organisation, organisation, organisation,” explained centre manager Dharam Jagpal.  “We also keep entry fees down to a minimum and all income goes straight into prize money. A player could almost make a decent living here, just from the cash.

“The Winmau Darts Centre has another key attraction that pubs can’t compete with – 18 boards, which means dozens of players can be accommodated at once, with plenty of practice time and little or no waiting for a turn to throw in leagues or competitions.

Darts at the centre started with a Monday league and just a handful of players. Mondays now see some 80 players and supporters. The centre believes in all games getting off to a flying start, so most are 501 straight start.
